The waterfall style countertops deliver an organic and modern design. t s not always easy for an interior designer to take an existing home with a definite design point of view and completely transform it, but that is what Jennifer Chipman, principal designer for the firm Alder & Tweed, did for a family ski home out West. Converting the approximately 6,000 square foot home s heavy rustic finishes into a sophisticated, casually elegant interior for a family of five was a project Chipman said she relished. I was pleasantly surprised how we pulled all the elements together, she said. It was a fun challenge for sure. Alder Tweed, based in Park City, Utah, specializes in vacation homes. Places where dreams become reality, Chipman said. The firm provides everything from furniture to furnishings, and part of its mission statement reads, Just bring your skis. For everything else, we ve got you covered. This ski-in, ski-out property, nestled in the hills of Deer Valley, Utah, is a second home to a couple and their three school-age boys who wanted an inviting, comfortable home that suited their active lifestyle as well as their more contemporary taste. The house had a good layout and a great open floor plan and didn t require any structural changes. The home s exterior had an organic, mountain vibe that the home owners felt would marry well with Alder Tweed s plan for the interior. The firm redid most of the finishes, swapping out the gold tones, travertine floors and carved wooden mantels for grey and neutral tones, new floors and lighting, window treatments and floating shelves for an overall look that was lighter, brighter and more sophisticated. The transformation began with the entryway. The stairway wrapped around a pendant light fixture that was custom-made by a local craftsman for the original homeowner, which the new owners wanted to keep. Chipman had imported Italian limestone flooring installed. It s a gorgeous grey that works well with the warm wood tones. We established an organic feel, Chipman said. The showstopper, however, is the black and white birch tree wallpaper by British manufacturer Cole Sons. A unique attention-grabber, its modern vibe sets the tone for the rest of the house. It was one of the first areas of the house the design team tackled, and it ultimately became Chipman s favorite part of the project. I love that wallpaper, she said. The kitchen was previously the textbook version of mountain rustic, with knotty wood and gold countertops. Chipman opted for oak cabinets and appliances with flat paneled fronts and plenty of storage. The backsplash is a Walker Zanger marble mosaic with a little bit of a grey tone and a hint of gold that lightened the space. The countertops are Caesarstone in London Grey in a waterfall style that is both organic and modern. The ventilation hood is custom-made with two chimneys to span the wide range, with the marble backsplash running behind it. Chipman added a shiplap detail to the kitchen ceiling. Ceiling details are always pretty, she said. It s an added layer and balances the white of the countertops. 76 WINTER 2015 woodbury

5 There is a breakfast nook where the family eats many of their meals, but there is also an adjoining formal dining room anchored by a massive table that Chipman had custom-made in a local woodshop. It is made of walnut with metal legs that extend through to the top of the table, adding a visual detail. It gives it a little bit of a light industrial feel, Chipman said. Custom bed linens, faux fur and a wool duvet in the master bedroom define luxury. The kids bunk beds are strategically placed to keep the room design light and airy. The side chairs are Holly Hunt in ivory leather. For the host chairs, Chipman wanted something a little more substantial; she chose a Schumacher fabric in a tribal/lodge kind of pattern to lend texture and warmth to the room. In the great room opposite, Chipman ripped out the old fireplace with its carved wooden mantle and replaced it with a linear gas fireplace insert. White oak, vein-cut limestone that runs horizontally from floor to ceiling and wraps around the sides of the fireplace echoes the light colors in the kitchen and offers balance. This is a cozy room that you can just fall into the deep sofas are covered in a family-friendly grey chenille fabric, the wall of windows and patio door is framed by custom window treatments in a steel blue, and the custom hairon-hide Shine rugs offer warmth underfoot and give a nod to the mountain setting. Upstairs, the boys share a bedroom with a pair of bunk beds. Since the window is situated on the side of the room, Chipman decided to go with bunk beds because they could float in front of the window without disturbing the design. ueen mattresses on the bottom run perpendicular to the twin mattresses on top. Nothing is too heavy or overwhelming for the room. The master bedroom was completely renovated. Chipman remade the fireplace, replacing the chunky rock surround with marble stone tile. There are two windows behind the bed, but the window treatment runs across the entire back. We decided it would be so much softer and prettier if we did the whole wall, to give the illusion 78 WINTER 2015 woodbury

6 Setting a whole new tone to the great room was replacing the old fireplace and its heavily carved mantle with a linear gas fireplace complete with white oak, veincut floor to ceiling limestone to echo the colors in the kitchen.

8 there are bigger windows, Chipman said. Slightly iridescent Holly Hunt sheers line the windows and allow plenty of light in, but motorized black-out curtains help keep the room dark at night. The bed probably the most amazing bed I ve ever used is by Ralph Lauren in chocolate grey leather with chrome posts. Only a few of them have been sold. It was definitely a splurge item. It s insanely gorgeous. The custom-made bed linens, the wool duvet and the faux fur throw add to the luxuriousness. We loaded on a lot of high-end luxury fabrics to get a lot of texture and create that luxe look, said Chipman. Many of the other furniture pieces, including the dresser and the two bedside chests, are also by Ralph Lauren. A gold petrified wood table stands between two Holly Hunt chairs. The walls and ceiling of the master bedroom, as well as throughout the house, are all painted the same color Sherwin Williams Natural Choice. It s a wonderful neutral, light with a hint of brown and grey, and it works well when you want to mesh warm and cold together, Chipman said. The uniform color throughout the house also maintains a cohesive design statement. The previously ornate master bath was completely redone. Basalt, volcanic stone tile on the floor and an egg-shaped Lacava soaking tub create a spa-like atmosphere. The master bath was meant to be luxurious and Chipman achieved that with Walker Zanger marble mosaic tile on the walls (echoed in the walk-in shower), a waterfall-style sink top, and a dark charcoal finish on the oak cabinets. The pendant lighting is new and offsets the other finishes in the room. We wanted to do something funky, Chipman explained, and it softens the space. The stiletto lights that flank the mirror are sexy but also function as good vanity lights. Many of Alder Tweed s clients are business men and women, athletes and others who crave a peaceful place to escape to in their free time. We want to make their spaces beautiful and comfortable and a retreat from their daily lives, Chipman said. This ski house meets that goal.
