1 INSTALLATION GUIDE WARNING This guide contains important information that must be read prior to installing your siding. Failure to comply with any of the following points MAY VOID YOUR WARRANTY. Be sure to read the entire warranty, installation guide and maintenance guide before installing your exterior siding. It is your responsibility to understand and follow all requirements and recommendations. Before installing your siding, inspect the delivered wood. All installed material shall be considered accepted. Be sure to have touch-up stain on hand to seal the board s cut ends before installing them. Ensure there is active air circulation in the walls, and respect all applicable building codes. Using adhesive to glue all south-facing exterior siding is recommended. Store siding in a dry area protected from the elements before and during installation. 2 1. BEFORE INSTALLING Inspect the delivered wood to make sure it is as ordered and to your satisfaction. Verify the quality of the wood and finish as well as the siding s profile and colour. Keep in mind that wood is a natural material; variation in colour and wood grain from one board to the next is normal and not considered a defect. A 5% margin of imperfection is acceptable. WALL PREPARATION 3.1 VERIFYING THE STRUCTURE Verify the structural integrity of the wall. The surface should be level, plumb, solid and able to receive the siding. Ensure metal flashings are installed above openings and where needed. Refer to your local building code. to to Figure 5 2

3 3.2 INSTALLING THE FURRING STRIPS Furring strips for horizontal siding Vertically install 1 x 3 wood furring strips. (Figure 6) Furring strips create an air gap between the wall and the siding. (Figures 7 and 8) Figure 6 Figure 7 Figure 8 We recommend all furring strips to be kiln-dried and spaced 16 inches on centre. Install starter trims at the bottom of the wall and ventilation trims at the top of the walls. (Figures 9, 10 and 11) Do not install any furring strips that could block airflow or retain water. 4 3.2.2 Furring strips for vertical siding Installation must be done on a double lathing. (Figures 12 and 13) Figure 12 Figure 13 First, place 1 x 4 wood furring strips vertically, spaced 16 inches on centre. Install starter trims at the bottom of the wall and the wall-top ventilated trims. Next, place 1 x 3 wood furring strips horizontally, spaced 16 inches centre-to-centre. Firmly press the first coat on the lip of the starter trim to avoid intrusion of pests or rodents. (Figures 12, 13, 14 and 15) End the last horizontal furring strip at 1 from the roof eave. This furring strip will be installed over the mesh of the wall top ventilated trim. (Figures 12, 13 and 16) 4

Be sure to protect any opening (doors, windows, etc.) against intrusion of pests or rodents. Do not install any furring strips that could block airflow or retain water. Figure PLANNING SPACES AND CLEARANCES MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Depending on where the siding will be installed, plan for a clearance larger or equal to: 8 inches from the ground (Figure 17), 2 inches from roof surfaces (Figure 18), 2 inches from adjacent structures (Figure 19) and 1/2 inch from aprons. INSTALLING SIDING 4.1 BASIC PRINCIPLES The installer must sort the boards which present more or less desirable and/or acceptable features in order to place them in less noticeable areas Horizontal Begin the first row by anchoring it in the starter trim to ensure proper active air circulation of the wall and prevent rodent and insect intrusion. (figure 21) Start from the bottom of the wall and work to the top. Use a pneumatic staple gun to anchor the siding, with two staples on each furring strip. (figures 22, 23, 24 and 25) Fit the tongue and groove ends together tightly before anchoring the boards. When a joint falls between two furring strips, add an 8-inch section of furring strip so that the boards around the joint are properly supported. (figures 22 and 23) Figure 21 Figure 22 Figure 23 For a more natural look, randomly install boards of different lengths or alternate the positioning of joints. (figures 24 and 25) During installation, check the height of boards every third or fourth row and make sure they are level. Be sure to provide air spaces for flashings. 6

7 Figure 24 Figure Vertical All boards must be cut at an angle of 22.5 degrees downwards. Tongue and groove ends are not suitable for vertical installation. All cuts must be sealed. (figure 29) When a joint falls between two furring strips, add an 8-inch section of furring strip so that the boards around the joint are properly supported. 8 The alignment of the siding boards at the bottom of the walls must be 1 inch lower than that of the furring strip. (figures 14 and 15) It is suggested to glue and staple the first board to avoid using facade nails. It is recommended to install the boards from right to left. Siding boards should end at the top of the walls flush with the furring strips to maintain active air circulation. (figure 32) N.B. With double lathing, pay particular attention to the positioning of doors and windows. They must be located in the insulated part of the wall to avoid losing their energy efficiency. Refer to your manufacturer. Figure 32 N.B. For flat roofs, active air circulation at the top of the walls must not be blocked by flashings. Check with your expert to make sure. 4.2 ANCHORING THE SIDING Use a pneumatic staple gun to set the staples at an approximate 20 to 40 angle at the top of the boards. Use 2-inch long, 16 gauge stainless steel staples with a minimum 7/16- inch crown. Make sure the staples penetrate the thickest part of the groove and that they are concealed by the next siding board. Anchor the siding boards with two staples on each furring strip. 9 4.3 CUTS AND TONGUE AND GROOVE JOINTS Use a finishing blade to make cuts. Joints must be cut at a 22.5 angle and fall on a furring strip for adequate support. (Figure 35). Make sure to stain all cuts. Fit the boards tightly together before anchoring. Tongue and groove joints do not need to be stained. Figure 35 Seal any gaps between siding and decorative trims to prevent water infiltration. (Figure 36) NO SPACING OR SEALER IS REQUIRED BETWEEN THE TONGUE AND GROOVE JOINTS OF THE BOARDS. Figure 36 Always stain the cut ends of boards. All surfaces damaged during installation must be repaired and touched up with the appropriate stain. Apply two coats of stain. (Figure 37) 4.4 TRIMS AND CORNERS Figure 37 For the bevel profile, corners and trims must be installed before the siding. Secure every 12 inches on centre using 2.5-inch ringed nails. Corners and trims can be surface mounted before the siding with an adhesive, or surface mounted for flat, grooved, ranch and V-joint profiles, and for boards and trims. Use 18 gauge finishing nails to hold in place while the adhesive dries. Apply a matching coat of stain to the nail heads to seal the wood. Apply stain only where needed. 45 CUTS FOR WALL CORNERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED BY THE MANUFACTURER. For specific requests about trims, contact your representative. 9

10 5. ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS Window trims must extend past the siding. Recommended Sealer Sealer Sealer Sealer Not recommended Sealer Sealer Do not staple boards positioned directly above or below a window; We recommend surface nailing them manually using ring nails. Ensure metal flashings are already installed above windows and openings. Consult your local building code now in force. For adequate air circulation, we recommend leaving a 3/8 in. (10 mm) space between the board directly above the window and the flashing. Sections and of the National Building Code state that you must isolate horizontal air spaces and roof spaces. Therefore, it is important to keep active air circulation in the walls and to evacuate it by the top, while ensuring this air does not penetrate the roof space. The installation specifications and recommendations mentioned in this guide comply with the requirements of the Québec Construction Code, Chapter 1 Building 2005 and 2010, as requested in Sections ; and
