RECONNECTING NORTHLAND RECONNECTING NORTHLAND Moemoea / Vision Whenua ora, wai ora, tangata ora Our land & our people flourishing together

Reconnecting Northland is supported by Programme Partners: WWF-New Zealand NZ Landcare Trust Programme Funders: The Tindall Foundation Foundation North HSBC Water Programme

Reconnecting Northland s people * Steering Group Kevin Prime (Chairperson) Bronwyn Hunt (Deputy) John Dawn Deborah Harding Peter Berg John Craig Helen Moodie Carolyn Smith (DOC) Tony Phipps (NRC) * Programme Team David Mules - Programme Manager (1.0) WWF Ngaire Tyson - Project Implementation (0.5) NZLT Jon Hampson - Project Implementation (0.5) NZLT Lee Barry / Michele Frank - Programme Support (0.2) WWF (Wgtn) * The People of Northland / Nga Iwi Whanui o Te Tai Tokerau

The Scope of Reconnecting Northland Where? Te Tai Tokerau / Northland peninsula including inshore coastal zone & islands: Approx. 1.7 million ha 80% Northland 20% Auckland Who? People who have an interest in the future of Northland those who live in the region, or who have an active relationship with it When? Reconnecting Northland will be a central feature of the region for the next 50+ years an intergenerational vision

Reconnecting Northland is NZ s first regional ecological restoration programme aiming to link projects & groups to create large-scale change, for the benefit of the natural world & the people of Te Tai Tokerau Based on principles of environmental & social connectivity & sustainability Strategic priorities set by the community & backed up by science & matauranga, towards which multiple groups are contributing, working in collaborative partnerships A bold, innovative & potentially transformational programme, whose time has come

Connectivity Natural World / Te Taiao restoring fragmented biodiversity & ecosystems, working beyond protected areas People / Te Tangata working in collaborative partnerships towards a shared vision, strengthening kaitiakitanga within a living landscape Culture & Spirit / Te Mauri thinking & working holistically, recognising the importance of our links with nature Resources / Te Putea working smartly, creatively, effectively, efficiently & sustainably

Greater environmental resilience Increased native biodiversity Reduced erosion Improved water quality Greater prosperity Northland Reconnected Stronger communities Greater cultural connectedness Improved well-being More sustainable livelihoods

New challenges demand fresh approaches (a global perspective) We are challenged as human kind has never been challenged before. To prove our mastery, not of nature, but of ourselves. To make peace with the earth & appreciate it for what it gives. Not for what we can take. Satish Kumar, Ecologist, Editor of Resurgence Magazine

Keeping it real (a Northland perspective) *ONE EARTH* *ONE LIFE* *ONE CHANCE* *TWO FELT PENS* Anonymous, Kohura, Hokianga Ferry

Vision into action It s all very well having an aspirational vision, but it will remain just that, unless there is an effective mechanism for achieving it. Strategic planning Vision Targets Goals Threats Objectives Strategies Actions

Seven Key Targets Targets are the special features of the region that Reconnecting Northland will focus on: Ecosystems inter-connected environments & habitats Species representative of native biodiversity Human attitudes, values, needs & activities interact critically with all of the targets

Kauri / Toitu Te Kauri

Significant Forests / Te Wao Nui O Tane

Kiwi, Kukupa & Bats / Nga Tamariki A Tane

Dune Systems / Nga Tahuna

Wetlands & Lakes / Nga Wai Maori

Estuaries / Nga Wai Tai

Tuna, Whitebait & Kewai / Nga Taonga Ika

Valuing Nature / Te Kaitiakitanga

Seven Key Threats Threats are the causes of problems for the health or viability of our targets: Kauri dieback Predators Browsing animals Weeds Unsustainable land-use practices Factors contributing to declining fish stocks Uncontrolled dogs & at least 15 more

Key Tasks for SET PRECEDENTS Partnering in precedent-setting practical community restoration projects that demonstrate the power of groups building connectivity through collaboration: Kiwi Coast community-led predator control for kiwi recovery: eastern Northland Whakaora Ake Warawara predator control for forest health & community development: Warawara Go With The Flow community-led catchment & biodiversity restoration: Kaipara catchment Dune Lakes & Wetlands region-wide restoration of dune lakes: Te Hiku, Waipoua, Pouto

2. SPREAD THE CONNECTIVITY APPROACH Inspiring & enabling groups to see the bigger picture & use connectivity tools: Providing advice, mentoring, facilitation, training, events, networking & other support to groups who wish to connect & scale up Social enterprise assisting stakeholder partners to develop related business enterprises, helping to expand & sustain restoration projects Te Arai Native Nursery project enabling bulk procurement of eco-sourced plants & social benefits
