3 Rationale The area from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door is a tourist honeypot. People are attracted by the beauty of the natural landscape primarily the two features mentioned but this influx has to be managed properly so that the environment isn t spoiled. The management also has to take into account the needs of the visitors who come in terms of provision of facilities and information. The ideal management scenario is being able to educate and cater for lots of visitors it but at the same time maintaining the beauty of the area which attracts them in the first place. In short it is about sustainable tourism.

4 The aim of the trip: To see and learn about the formation of Lulworth cove and Durdle Door (i.e. why it is so beautiful in the first place) To investigate the effectiveness of the management of the area (i.e. to see how the beauty is preserved and the visitors kept happy and in ice creams) To practice coursework skills

5 What happens? The trip involves a mix of look, see and hear and individual/group investigation. The hypothesis for your investigation is: The management of the Lulworth The management of the Lulworth coastline is beneficial for the environment.

6 The data you will collect involves: Notes in your booklets about the formation of Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Stairhole this information can form the background for your investigation as well as give you real examples of landforms for the exam. Annotated field sketches of Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Stairhole to highlight the physical features and evidence of the human activity (either positive management or negative impacts of tourists). A talk from the Heritage Centre staff about the management of the area. Bi polar environmental surveys at Lulworth and Durdle Door. Litter surveys at Lulworth and Durdle Door A land use survey down the one street in Lulworth Village to assess facilities.
