To date more than 30 schools have been subjected to noise abatement interventions Large areas have been pedestrianized NEW APPROACH FOR INTERVENTION DEFINITION. The methodology used for the design of noise reduction interventions in the two pilot cases was based on both quantitative data and on qualitative data such as annoyance perception, suggestions and proposals, in terms of desirable actions, expressed by stakeholders who have been involved in the earlier stages of the project. 5

6 FIRST RESULTS OF THESE 1 POLITICIES.. LIMITED TRAFFIC ZONES / PEDESTRIAN ZONES SINCE 1988 A LIMITED TRAFFIC ZONE HAS BEEN SET UP Covering the whole area of the historical center of Florence (within the nineteenth-century boulevards and protected as 'UNESCO Heritage). Within this area, circulation and parking are governed by special rules. Fornon-residents, circulation and parking within the area are prohibited during the following hours: weekdays from Monday to Friday (7.30 am / 7.30 pm) and Saturday (7.30 am / 6.00 pm). SINCE 2008 SOME PEDESTRIAN ZONES HAVE BEEN SET UP Starting from 2008 other areas inside the area of the historicalcenter became pedestrian, leading to significant changes in the road network and Local Public Transport of the surrounding areas: October 2009: Piazza del Duomo area; June 2011: Piazza Pitti and Via Tornabuoni area. 6

IN BOTH PILOT CASES SELECTED BY A PROCESS OF PARTICIPATORY DESIGNING WITH STAKEHOLDERS HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO DEFINE NOISE REDUCTION INTERVENTIONS 2.1 DON MINZONI SCHOOL Don Minzoni Primary School is located in Via Reginaldo Giuliani.The main problem of this area is noise generated by road (cars and buses)traffic of the street, identified in Florence Action Plan as a hotspot. 2.2 BROZZI QUARACCHI AREA The urban area of Brozzi-Quaracchi includes the historical quarters of Brozzi and Quaracchi, in the north-west of Florence. The area is delimited by two major roads. Noise annoyance to the population, is mainly causedby the flow of vehicles crossing the area between the two main roads using local streets rather than the road system outside the quarter 8

9 FIRST RESULTS OF THESE POLITICIES DON MINZONI SCHOOL THE PROCESS OF PARTICIPATORY DESIGNING HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT WITH STAKEHOLDERS (STUDENTS, TECHERS, PARENTS ). Interventions required have been realized and ante and post operam survey s results analyzed. (Anphitheatre, noise barriers, flower bad, playground equipment ) 9

11 Requested interventions 2.2 BROZZI QUARACCHI AREA The urban area of Brozzi-Quaracchi includes the historical quarters of Brozzi and Quaracchi, in the north-west of Florence.
