2 Organizers are pleased to invite you to the scientific and expert 15th International Waste Management Symposium Zagreb 2018 which has traditionally been held for 30 years. The first International Symposium on Waste Management in Zagreb was held back in With this 15th International Scientific and Expert Symposium tradition is cycled with 30 years of organizing such a manifestation gathering eminent experts and scientists in the field of waste management from across the region. The circular economy places emphasis on a new approach to a comprehensive waste management system, and thus additional challenges to all system stakeholders. Since the adoption of the national Waste Management Plan for period , the activities for establishing an integrated waste management system are becoming more and more intense. However, 85% of the collected waste in the is still disposed on landfills without prior processing. There is a great responsibility on local self-government units that have to build infrastructure for separation at source, build waste recycle yards and inform and educate the public. Separately collected plastics is hardly placed on the market as a valuable raw material. Waste management centers should ultimately be the last stage of the system, but so far only two projects have been successfully implemented. However, establishing a complete system evidently is not possible without energy recovery from waste that can no longer be recycled. Also, by building the wastewater managment system, waste sludge is becoming an increasing problem because there is no systematic solution of this problem at the state level. Marine waste and microplastics have been detected as a new growing waste management problem. Therefore, this years scientific and expert symposium will analyze major changes in the overall waste management system in all its segments, with particular emphasis on energy recovery, wastewater management and plastic waste. The aim of symposium is to give quality solutions through the cooperation of the scientific and professional sector and other stakeholders in the waste management system - solutions that will address the issues in overall management of all categories from the aspect of waste management principles, waste management hierarchy and the circular economy.

First author is exempt from paying the registration fee.
