2 WHY MONASH? MASTER OF URBAN PLANNING AND DESIGN A city is more than a place in space, it is a drama in time. SIR PATRICK GEDDES Pioneering town planner Urban planners play a pivotal role in shaping how our cities respond to significant challenges. As one of the world s top 100 universities, we enjoy an excellent reputation for research and teaching. But, even more importantly, we re known for a fierce commitment to our communities and environments a commitment inherited from our namesake, Sir John Monash, and embedded in our culture. At Monash, you do more than study you engage with the world. In this new master s program, you ll work closely with MADA s urban space experts on real-world projects. As part of the nation s largest university, you ll have access to leading academics and industry practitioners across disciplines from engineering and science to geography and economics. You ll also have the chance to connect with our energetic and intellectually rigorous urban planning research institutes, including the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities, and Monash Infrastructure. We want to give you a rich, deep and dynamic learning experience. Our collaborative culture produces interdisciplinary professionals with a strong network of ideas, skills and relationships. You ll graduate with the flexibility to meet new urban challenges and adapt to the evolving job market. These challenges might include accommodating growing populations, servicing new communities, renewing older areas, building resilient infrastructure, locating emerging industries, preparing for the impacts of climate change and responding to disruptive innovations. Complex problems require planners to be versatile and multifaceted: a persuasive collaborator, an articulate mediator, a strategic organiser. Planning education needs to prepare this future professional with the skills, knowledge and imagination to provide equitable and sustainable civic visions, strategies and plans for our evolving built environments and communities. Extending policy-based planning, our program adds spatial planning within a multi-pronged approach that integrates sustainability, community and technology with diverse planning strategies. Project based learning will be conducted in a studio environment, where students work on real planning problems in real settings in conjunction with seminars that provide complementary planning foundations. Elective options ensure that you can focus on areas of particular interest through broad offerings of related fields across the university. Planning projects will be oriented around key contemporary themes: compact city, ecological city, sprawling city and inclusive city. The innovative Monash Master of Urban Planning and Design reaches across disciplines to offer a deep understanding of the built environment that will open your mind to shaping the world of tomorrow. You will emerge from our program as a broad urban planner who can bring creativity and flexibility to address evolving urban issues. Whether in government or industry, you ll contribute as a spatial thinker passionate about a well-designed and planned people-centred future. 3 Image: The Future: A Trip in Time to the Year 2200 and Beyond by Tamara Bird Image: CREMORNE by Jasmine Placentino WHO WE RE LOOKING FOR If you re curious, creative and dedicated to enriching our urban communities, becoming a professional urban planner could transform your future - and the future of others. Whether you re keen to upskill, change direction, or just keep learning, this course will put you on the path to playing an important role in an increasingly challenging world. You may be about to complete an undergraduate degree. Or perhaps you already work in urban planning or an allied area and would like to advance your current career, or lay the groundwork for a different journey. Whatever your motivation, we welcome applicants from any part of Australia and the world. And from all backgrounds. Architecture. Environment. Landscape architecture. Engineering. Economics. Geography. Heritage. The list goes on. Whether you re changing careers, or moving forward in your field, you won t waste your previous experience. You ll build on what you already know to make a strong platform for the next stage in your career. And we ll give you credit for relevant qualifications which may shorten your course. HOW THE COURSE WORKS In the Masters of Urban Planning and Design, teams work on projects along four themes: compact city, ecological city, sprawling city and inclusive city. Exploring each, you ll encounter all sorts of critical questions. How do we manage disruptive technologies? Can we create more bike lanes? What s the best way to manage flood risk? How do we protect environmentally sensitive areas? Can we ensure good quality of life for elderly people? How can we plan high-density cities to be both sustainable and liveable? To provide insight into such issues, learnings are integrated across the themes through lectures, workshops, seminars and field visits. Planning projects, complementary study units and professional practice subjects work as a package to develop applied skills and knowledge. For instance in studying the compact city, you will learn how to how to apply local planning instruments to a particular area, while at the same time learning about regulatory issues and theories in global settings. This practical, project-based course allows you to: Tackle 21st century urban problems in real-world settings Collaborate across disciplines Combine planning methods with design skills Deepen your understanding of research practices Enrich your knowledge by comparing plans and policies in cities around the world You ll achieve all this while leading urban thinkers guide you along the way. In addition, you can tailor your studies to your individual interests with elective units. You might like venture into another faculty to learn about a topic such as transport, sustainable development, economics, indigenous perspectives or professional writing. Or maybe you ll undertake an exegesis as a springboard for a PhD. 2 Master of Urban Planning and Design Master of Urban Planning and Design 3

4 WHERE WILL THIS TAKE ME? URBAN PLANNING EXPERTISE ACROSS MONASH As urban needs change, so does the job market. Employers now demand planners who can bring fresh perspectives to solving urban problems, and readily adapt to new roles in the workplace. This course clearly puts you ahead of the competition by training you to integrate design with traditional policy-driven processes. There are so many directions your career might take. As an urban designer for a local council, you might help an industrial estate make smarter use of alternative water sources. Or you might become a planning economist in private practice, and explore funding options to improve our public space. As a strategic planner, you might work with a university to blend a campus into an existing community, or join an architecture and planning firm to transform a cityscape with spectacular towers, bridges and parks. Image: Community Consultation by Shing Hei Ho You will also find challenging positions in a range of avenues. In government departments and agencies that mange water, the environment, transport and other infrastructure. In local government as a strategic or statutory planner working on local matters like development proposals. In Australian and international firms that specialise in planning, in heritage and conservation, or in environment and economics. And in not for profit bodies like NGOs, that could take you to underdeveloped or overdeveloped places far and wide, where you ll confront diverse climatic and cultural issues. As the future unfolds, opportunities will emerge including those yet to be imagined. But wherever you re headed, you ll bring along essential creative, analytical and communication skills. And, no matter what work you choose to do, these skills will give you a serious edge when it comes to making your mark on the world. The Masters of Urban Planning and Design is located in Monash University which is a leading university in areas relating to urban policy and practice. 5 A STANDARD PROGRESSION MAP THE COURSE IN DETAIL Year 1 Semester 1 Planning project 1: The compact city (12 points) Planning study 1: Regulating the city Applied professional practice: Planning capabilities and competencies Over a four-semester, two-year period, the knowledge and skills required for professional recognition as a planner with the Planning Institute of Australia *, will be integrated throughout the course structure, which comprises four project studio units, four standalone complementary depth study units, two applied professional practice units and two open elective units. PART A. Planning projects and study Units Cumulative, project-based learning is attached to real-world settings and research projects that provide the framework/ structure for the development of the conceptual, creative, analytical, critical, ethical and communication skills required by planning professionals and appropriate to graduate study. Working in multidisciplinary groups on research projects, you ll learn how to synthesise planning solutions within the constraints of a given project. Projects work across a range of spatial settings, allowing a broad exploration of issues, and development of skills and knowledge. The delivery of the project integrates lectures from leading academics and practitioners, workshops and seminars, field visits and examinations of case studies of projects, plans and policies used in cities around the world. In each project, students develop skills around applied knowledge that considers how the physical, social, cultural, economic and governance issues are integrated. Ideas, concepts and outcomes of projects will be communicated through presentations, draft policies, plans and urban designs. You ll be assessed through regular critiques of your work and through the final outcomes of written and visual work at the end of the semester. The results of each project will become part of a compendium that collects and builds knowledge and expertise in the course. This compendium will be, in effect, a living document that compiles all of the theoretical, historical, propositional and final reports of the course. Semester 2 Year 2 Semester 1 Planning project 2: The ecological city (12 points) Planning project 3: The sprawling city (12 points) Planning study 2: Economics and the city Planning study 3: Critical debates histories and theories of urban planning Open elective Applied professional practice: Urban planning and design research methods The project units include: 1. Planning project 1: The compact city 2. Planning project 2: The ecological city 3. Planning project 3: The sprawling city 4. Planning project 4: The inclusive city Complementary study units deepen knowledge areas and introduce you to the methods and approaches of urban planning research that engage with the multidisciplinary socio-cultural, political, economic, historical, theoretical and governance dimensions relevant to planning and urbanism. These units are run as lectures and seminars and are delivered in each semester. The study units incorporate literature and case study material that reflects on a wide range of approaches in Australia and internationally. This will ensure a relevance of material to students who come from or wish to work overseas. The study units include: 1. Planning Study 1: Regulating the city 2. Planning Study 2: Economics and the city 3. Planning Study 3: Critical debates: histories and theories of urban planning 4. Planning Study 4: Democratic community engagement Semester 2 Planning project 4: The inclusive city (12 points) Planning study 4: Democratic community engagement Open elective or UPD exegesis Part B. Applied professional practices units In these studies you ll focus on the generic capabilities and specific competencies that contribute to the practice of a quality urban planning professional, and the development of their abilities to work at a high level and in an ethical way in multidisciplinary teams that address a range of complex issues in the city. Issues covered include the development and constant refining of skills in research, project management, spatial analysis, data collection and management, policy writing, plan-making and urban design, architectural plan-reading, and presentation and communication skills. The units include: 1. Applied professional practice: Planning capabilities and competencies 2. Applied professional practice: Urban planning and design research methods Part C. Electives These studies provide complementary depth units that enable students to tailor studies to individual interests. You can select units from either planning-specific advanced planning studies depth units or other units offered by the University. Two open electives may be chosen from across the Monash University faculties, in which you re eligible to enrol. In any given year a range of units relevant to urban planning (e.g. transport, architecture, sustainable development, economics, project management, Indigenous perspectives, professional writing) will be available. If you re interested in progressing to research training, an exegesis unit may be taken in place of the final elective unit. In this unit, you ll conceptualise and present a final project work in the context of contemporary theory and practice. 6 Master of Urban Planning and Design * This brand-new course is in the process of applying for accreditation by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA).
