1 WORKSHOP SPEAKERS (In alphabetical order by last name) Bernadette Balics In 2001, Bernadette Balics founded Ecological Landscape Design based on the conviction that it is both possible and important to apply the principles and strategies of ecology, sustainable agriculture and permaculture to create healthy urban landscapes that are at the same time beautiful, functional, and personal. She has since completed over 250 design projects and is frequently requested to give workshops, talks and classes on California native plants, ecological landscaping and creating habitat gardens. Bernadette is a member of the California Native Plant Society, and volunteers with the Sacramento Valley Chapter. She is a past board member of Ecolandscape California, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide education and advocacy for ecologically responsible landscapes. She is QWEL (Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper) certified and a Green Gardener trained professional. 2 Brock Dolman Brock Dolman co-founded the Sowing Circle, LLC Intentional Community & Occidental Arts and Ecology Center in 1994 ( where he continues to reside and act as a Director of OAEC s Permaculture/Resilient Community Design Program, Wildlands Program and the WATER Institute in Sonoma County, California. Since 1995 he has co-taught over 80 Permaculture Design Certificate Courses in the USA and internationally, including being one of the only Permaculture teachers to co-teach two International Permaculture Convergence PDC s: IPC8 in Sao Paulo, Brazil and IPC11 in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. Over the past two decades he has worked as a watershed restoration ecologist and permaculture designer/educator/consultant internationally in Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, U.S. Virgin Islands, Spain, Brazil, China/Tibet, Canada, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba, Haiti, Malaysia and widely in the U.S.A. He has been featured in the award winning films: The 11th Hour by Leonardo DiCaprio; The Call of Life by Species Alliance; and Permaculture: A Quiet Revolution by Vanessa Shultz; Russian River: All Rivers. Brock graduated in 1992 with honors from the University of California Santa Cruz in Agro-Ecology and Conservation Biology. Peter Estournes Peter Estournes brings nearly 40 years of experience in the landscape and green industry, including nursery production and sales, teaching, landscape design, construction and maintenance as well as horticultural consulting. Estournes and business partner Jay Tripathi, own and operate Gardenworks Inc. a Design/Build and Management Landscape Contracting firm in northern Sonoma County.Peter has a degree in Horticulture from Cal Poly, Pomona. He is an 'Expert' level Certified Water Manager, a Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper, is EPA WaterSense certified and a Landscape Industry Certified Professional. He has served on committees for three Bay Area water agencies. Peter helped build then served as a Co-Director for CLCA's Water Management Certification and Performance Program. He served as California Landscape Contractor's Association State President in 2007and is currently a co-chair for CLCA s Resource Management Committee. He is also currently serving as co-chair of the Sonoma Marin Water Saving Partnership s Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper Program Board of Directors and recently served on the State of California Department of Water Resources Independent Technical Panel. He is part of the the Governor's Executive Order EO B-37-16's Urban Advisory Group. Bob Horowitz Bob Horowitz is a Supervising Environmental Scientist with CalRecycle, specializing in organics materials management. Bob s team works with a multitude of other agencies, including air and water quality regulators, as well as the agricultural community. In the past, he has specialized in composting air emissions. His efforts helped reveal not only how much emissions were coming from compost piles, but what kinds of emissions and whether those types of compounds cause air quality problems. With a team of compost experts, Bob helped pioneer a solar-powered positive-aeration composting system which provides significant air quality benefits when compared to conventional turned windrows, 2017 EcoLandscape Conference and Trade Show, Feb 11,
3 while reducing water and diesel use. He also worked to guide California s research efforts on greenhouse gas emissions from compost production and use. Bob was a member of the multi-agency team that helped the Department of Food and Agriculture implement registration of organic input materials in California. He is a graduate of California State University, Fresno. Chuck Ingels Chuck Ingels has been the Farm and Horticulture Advisor with UC Cooperative Extension in Sacramento County since For 7 years before that, he worked at the UC Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education Program in Davis. He conducts research and educational programs for tree fruit and wine grape growers, landscape professionals, and the public. He also oversees the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center, which is maintained by over 60 Master Gardeners. He is the lead editor and author of the UC Publication, The Home Orchard. He has conducted studies and co-authored publications on brown marmorated stink bugs, which were discovered in Sacramento in 2013 and are now spreading throughout the state. Ed Laivo Ed Laivo has over 38 years of extensive varied experience in plant production, nursery management and sales and marketing at both the retail and wholesale level. Ed is a fruit tree and edible landscaping specialist with a focus on gardening using less water. More recently Ed has been working on developing varied Best Management Practices (BMP) for insect and disease prevention. He has been a frequent guest on numerous TV and radio shows as well as a popular writer contributing insightful articles on home growing fruit to many popular gardening periodicals. While with the Dave Wilson Nursery Ed produced the nationally recognized Backyard Orchard Culture High density pruning and planting of fruit trees. He is a contributing editor of Sunset Garden Book and the popular UC publication #3485 The Home Orchard. Ed has been a member of the CLCA s East Bay board of directors and has sat on the Ecolandscape California s advisory committee. He lends his time as a consultant and lecturer to many nursery businesses, professional groups and Master Gardeners groups. Currently Ed is the Sales and Marketing Director of Four Winds Growers one of California s premier Citrus and Edible Plant Growers. Deva Luna Lead Designer for EarthCare Landscaping in the South Bay area for 15 years, Deva was in on the ground floor of the Sustainable Landscaping movement. She also is an entertaining and popular speaker on subjects such as Losing the Lawn, Edible Landscaping, Native Plants, Pervious Hardscaping and Greywater EcoLandscape Conference and Trade Show, Feb 11,
4 Tony Madrone Tony Madrone is a principal of Indra Designs, Inc. Tony is dedicated to creating beautiful, functional and unique native-scapes utilizing drought tolerant plants, high efficiency irrigation and locally sourced materials when feasible. Tony applies his extensive knowledge of irrigation systems and residential storm water management to designing and installing on-site water reuse systems for residential and commercial applications. Tony has 18 years of experience in landscape and irrigation design and is an ARCSA Accredited Professional, Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper (QWEL), EPA Certified Water Auditor, EPA Water Sense Partner and Licensed Landscape Contractor Lori Palmquist Lori has worked in the landscape trade for 28 years. During that time, she has been a maintenance gardener, a certified arborist, landscape contractor, irrigation contractor, and irrigation designer and consultant. She is an Irrigation Association certified irrigation designer, contractor, water manager, and irrigation auditor. She has been teaching irrigation and water management for QWEL, Green Gardener, Bay Friendly, Master Gardeners, and homeowners for the past 10 years. Lori s latest passion is creating web applications to make water management and irrigation design and installation more user-friendly. She has created 12 apps and websites to date, and has another nearing completion. Dave Phelps Dave Phelps is a Landscape Architect and Horticultural Consultant with a long career in the California Landscape Industry. With two degrees from Cal Poly, SLO, he went on to run his own residential landscape design/build/maintain company in Marin for two decades, winning many awards and having his projects featured on various garden tours. In 2010 he was voted the Best Landscape Designer by the readers of the Pacific Sun. Dave was president of the North Coast Chapter of the CLCA, Chairman of the Marin IPM Commission, and has become a UC Master Gardener, a Certified Arborist, a Bay-Friendly Rater, and a Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper. Dave has worked as the Sustainability Manager and in-house Landscape Architect for a commercial landscaping company employing over 500 people throughout the greater Bay Area for over six years, promoting sustainable landscape practices. Dave has taught at Bay-Friendly Landscaping and Master Gardener classes as well as at San Quentin Prison. He has enjoyed speaking at many conventions, seminars, and other events. Dave is always excited to solve landscape problems and spread the importance and practices of good land stewardship. Wendy Proud Wendy Proud, California Sales Representative for Mountain States Wholesale Nursery, holds a degree in Ornamental Horticulture and has over twenty-five years of sales and production experience in the retail and wholesale nursery business. While living in the Los Angeles area, Wendy enjoyed working as a Grower and New Plants Manager for Monrovia Growers producing and promoting unique varieties. She also co-owned and operated a landscape 2017 EcoLandscape Conference and Trade Show, Feb 11,
5 design and installation company, Proud Murphy, Inc. providing specialized maintenance programs, horticultural coaching and promoted proper plant selection, placement and organic gardening practices. Karrie Reid Karrie Reid, M.S. University of California Cooperative Extension Advisor, San Joaquin County, University of California Cooperative Extension Advisor, San Joaquin County. Karrie is an Environmental Horticulture Advisor for UCCE in San Joaquin County where she serves the professional landscape and nursery industries with applied research, education, and consultation. She regularly provides training to landscape professionals in sustainable practices including an 8-week Green Gardener Qualification Training series. Karrie served on the Central Valley committee for Water Use Classification of Landscape Species (WUCOLS), the state s online standard reference for landscape plant water use. She has been performing deficit irrigation-based plant performance trials since 2005, and has expanded them to include grower and breeder introductions for both sun and shade. Karrie also acts as advisor to the San Joaquin County Master Gardener program and oversees a group of dedicated volunteers who manage a regionally appropriate demonstration landscape around the county s Robert J. Cabral Agricultural Center. In her previous position as Staff Research Associate at UC Davis, she also worked on statewide projects characterizing runoff in urban watersheds. She holds a B.S. in Biology from UC Santa Cruz, an M.S. in Horticulture from UC Davis, and is an avid gardener and plant lover. Jodie Sheffield Jodie Sheffield is the Sod & Seed Specialist in charge of Research and Development for Delta Bluegrass Company located in Stockton, California. With over 25 years of experience in the Turfgrass Industry, Jodie has worked with Plant Breeders, Seed Producers and Research Facilities throughout California and the Pacific North West developing premium quality turfgrass sod. With a huge emphasis placed on water conservation, Delta Bluegrass Company has pioneered the use of California Native Grass Species and now Kurapia to provide cutting edge water saving sods! Jodie s research has developed key information on maintenance and cultural practices of these 50% Water Saving products. Working towards creating awareness of the vital importance of climate appropriate landscaping, Jodie is enthusiastically spreading the word about the use of California Native Grasses and Kurapia. Jodie was a presenter at Sunset Magazines Celebration Weekend, the PG & E Water Conservation Showcase and she is a frequent presenter at Bay-Friendly, Master Gardener Meetings and other industry events. In 2015, Jodie joined the Board of Directors for the California Native Grasslands Association. Jodie is also the President of the Board of Directors of the Haven Of Peace, Inc. Steve Zien Steve enjoys sinking his hands and heart into soil. A University of Wisconsin soil science degree, an internship at an organic research farm, and operating an organic truck farm all helped to nurture his love for soil. Transplanted to Sacramento in 1977, Steve s Living Resources Company (LRC) sprouted numerous organic horticultural offerings. With a desire to grow an organic horticultural movement in the region, Steve authored an organic garden column in 2017 EcoLandscape Conference and Trade Show, Feb 11,
6 Sacramento Bee, served as California State Fair's IPM Specialist, and taught organic horticulture at American River College and the University of California, Davis. By promoting organic horticulture for over 40 years, Steve has been a regular guest on regional garden talk shows and is known as Sacramento's Organic Advocate. He has served as a technical advisor for numerous environmental organizations and currently consults for LRC and Our Water Our World. A California Certified Nursery Professional, California Licensed Pesticide Applicator, River-Friendly EcoLandscaper, he is a founding member of EcoLandscape California and instructor of several of their EcoLandscape River-Friendly Green Gardener classes. Steve s leadership in the industry has been recognized with numerous awards including the California Department of Pesticides Regulation's most prestigious IPM Innovator Award EcoLandscape Conference and Trade Show, Feb 11,
