1 2 nd WMO/IAHR Training Course on Stream Gauging Andong, Republic of Korea, 4~6 September 2013 Introduction The Hydrology Commission of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) have agreed to cooperate in the design and organization of a course on stream gauging based on the 2nd edition of the Manual of Stream Gauging (2010), and recent advancements in research, technology and instrumentation for hydrometry. This course is the second of a series that will be organized worldwide by IAHR and WMO. Stream gauging is critical for routine monitoring of catchment and estuarine environments and for the provision of essential information for hydrological and hydraulic modeling of these environments. It is recognized that continued education and training on methods for hydrometric data collection, validation and publication are the backbone for the consolidation and dissemination of a hydrological culture. Such a culture has been and is becoming increasingly important at a time when water resources are stressed by climate and anthropogenic impacts. These new challenges call for improved instruments and methodologies to support integrated river basin management (especially for trans-boundary watersheds) and analyses of future alternative scenarios. Objective The course aims at providing a primer to the new edition of the WMO Manual of Stream Gauging, published in 2010, by describing both conventional methods as well as recent technological advancements in stream gauging (with special emphasis on recent advances in the hydroacoustic and image-based instruments). Audience Managers, professionals and technicians of hydrological and hydro-meteorological services, water engineers, staff of public water authorities, private water services, hydropower companies, Master and PhD Students. Established in Nov. 2009, the Center is capable of real scale tests with three main channels and large capacity pump facilities. The Center stands ready with the expertise to address the need for new technologies and standards of hydraulic structures, river morphology and habitat, and fluvial environments. Andong

Andong is the home of Confucianism in Korea. During the Joseon Dynasty, Andong attracted scores of Confucian scholars becoming a pioneering city in Confucian thought.

This city also acted as a home to the noble class during the Joseon period. Many of the homes of the noble class are still standing in Andong; some are kept up by the relatives of the original owner.

4 Andong is the home of Confucianism in Korea. During the Joseon Dynasty, Andong attracted scores of Confucian scholars becoming a pioneering city in Confucian thought. This city also contained the highest number of private schools from the Joseon Dynasty as well as Confucian schools. To this day, Andong still has around 26 private schools from the Joseon Dynasty. This city also acted as a home to the noble class during the Joseon period. Many of the homes of the noble class are still standing in Andong; some are kept up by the relatives of the original owner. Certain homes have established guest house accommodations. Two of the most famous places are Jirye Art Village and Jeonju Ryussi jongtaek (Ryu noble family s estate). These are great places to experience the essence of Korea s traditional lifestyles. Byeongsan Seowon(traditional academic complex) Nakdong River near Andong Transportation Seoul Andong By train: There is only one train departing from Seoul Station to Andong daily. There are approximately 7 trains daily departing from Cheongnyangni Station between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Travel time is four to 5 hours. By express bus: Bus #13 operates from 6:20 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. out of East Seoul Bus Terminal at Gwangjingu, Seoul. Approximate travel time is 3 hours and 50 minutes Transportation in Andong Andong Intercity Bus Terminal and Andong Train Station are located in the center of the downtown area in close proximity to each other. Accordingly, many lodging facilities and restaurants are in walking distance. If you are planning to use local city buses while in Andong, you can find bus times at Andong Train Station.
