3 A technology transfer project sponsored by the Swiss Federal Office for Environment A group of experts assembled for a research project on vegetal Envelop developed a technology for greening building façades. 5 Architectural innovation a patented system The principle. Plants are sown on the façade and grow on the ceramic layer. They consume little water and require minimum maintenance. Over 100 species can be used. Ceramic is the visible face of the façade. This attractive, noble material is porous, which allows roots to penetrate and the substrate to breathe. Substrate The support providign nutrients for the plants to grow. Specially designed for optimum growth, it is composed of mainly mineral matter. Concrete is the effective support of the façade system. Ultra-high-performance fiber-reinfored concrete enables weight and thickness to be minimized. Source: Montage principe: O. 10 First show façade has been constructed thanks to a participative urban development project in Geneva In 2011, Geneva State launched the «Nature in the city» initiative which preserves and promotes nature in the urban area. The goals of this initiative is: - Involve local communities in the urban projects planning and implementation - Bring nature in the urban areas - Preserve biodiversity - Test innovative products - Enhance life quality of the inhabitants - Initiate a citizen approach
