1 Agricultural Environmental Management Certified Planner Directory 2008 Revised For the Development of Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans (CNMPs)
2 Agricultural Environmental Management Certified Planner Directory Introduction Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM) is a voluntary, incentive-based program that helps farmers operate environmentally sound and economically viable businesses. The AEM program coordinates agricultural and environmental conservation agencies and programs, as well as private sector consultants, to provide quality conservation services for farmers. Most agricultural counties in New York State are conducting AEM programs, and participation has grown to include over 11,000 farms. Using AEM s 5-tiered approach, farmers required and/or interested in having a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan (CNMP) for their farm would work with local AEM resource professionals to develop and implement CNMP. CNMPs must be developed by a Certified AEM Planner and, upon completion, signed by both the Certified Planner and the farmer. Planners become certified through an extensive process that involves achieving and maintaining Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) credentials and the completion of the CNMP Certification Training. Upon completion of the training, the conditionally certified individual must submit three plans for review and acceptance to obtain full certification to develop CNMPs. Once a planner is certified, a Quality Assurance / Quality Control program reviews a planner s work on a continual basis to ensure quality planning. Certification is a designation given by the State Conservationist of the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) in New York in consultation with the Commissioner of the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets and the NYS Soil and Water Conservation Committee. Planners with this designation are certified to develop CNMPs that: Meet USDA NRCS standards Are in concert with the business objectives of the farm enterprise Address the environmental concerns of the farm and the watershed Meet the requirements of the Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) General Permit (GP-04-02) Purpose of the Directory This directory is designed to assist farm businesses with the selection of planners. You will find a regional, county by county breakdown, which indicates the planners who provide services in that particular county. On pages of the directory, a complete listing of all certified planners has been alphabetically organized. We encourage you to identify the most appropriate planner for the job and time frame required. Some planners may provide additional services beyond CNMP planning. For further information about these services, contact the planner. Questions about this Directory? For additional updates of this Directory visit: Please direct questions about content and application of this directory to: NYS Soil and Water Conservation Committee 10B Airline Drive Albany, NY (518) Bob Brower, CNMP Specialist bobbrower@wildblue.net or Greg Albrecht, CNMP Specialist galbrecht@twcny.rr.com 1
