1 CALL FOR PAPERS ECOSUD 2009: A unique forum for the presentation and discussion of recent work on different aspects of ecosystems and sustainable development. Seventh International Conference on Ecosystems and Sustainable Development Incorporating The Prigogine Awards 2009 The historic hilltop Chianciano 8-10 July 2009 Chianciano Terme, Italy WESSEX INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Advancing International Knowledge Transfer ORGANISED BY: Wessex Institute of Technology, UK University of Siena, Italy IN COLLABORATION WITH: The International Journal of Design and Nature and Ecodynamics
2 OBJECTIVES ECOSUD 2009 is the 7th International Conference in the well-established series on Ecosystems and Sustainable Development. The meetings provide a unique forum for the presentation and discussion of recent work on different aspects of ecosystems and sustainable development, including physical sciences and modelling. ECOSUD is a challenge for the creation of a new science in line with Prigogine s statement that at all levels we observe events associated with the emergence of novelties and narrative elements, which we may associate with the creative power of nature. ECOSUD is not only a forestage to present novel research related to ecological problems from all over the world; it also gives opportunities for new emergent ideas in science arising from the cross fertilization of different disciplines including mathematical models and eco-informatics, evolutionary thermodynamics and biodiversity, structures in ecosystems modelling and landscapes to mention but a few. The aim of the Conference is to encourage and facilitate the interdisciplinary communication between scientists, engineers, economists and professionals working in ecological systems and sustainable development. Emphasis will be given to those areas that will most benefi t from the application of scientifi c methods for sustainable development, including the conservation of natural systems around the world. The Conference objectives have evolved over the years, seeking to integrate thermodynamics, ecology and economics into ecodynamics. This successful series fi rst started in Peniscola, Spain (1997); and continued in Lemnos, Greece (1999); Alicante, Spain (2001); Siena, Italy (2003); Cadiz, Spain (2005); and Coimbra, Portugal (2007). PLEASE PASS THESE DETAILS ON TO OTHER INTERESTED COLLEAGUES WHO SHOULD ATTEND ECOSUD 2009 will be of interest to scientists, engineers and professionals working in the areas of ecological systems and sustainable development. 5 CHIANCIANO TERME, ITALY Nestled amongst the rolling hills and lakes of Southern Tuscany in Italy, the medieval town of Chianciano Terme is home to Renaissance architecture, beautiful castles and churches, and typical rustic Italian cuisine. Established by the Etruscans, under Roman rule the town was renowned for its thermal waters and since has become an acclaimed Spa town. Today the city is composed of two contrasting parts, the historic hilltop Chianciano Vecchia, and the modern spa resort of Terme, both within a short distance of the stunning natural waterfalls and picturesque Italian villages for which the area is famed. Photograph courtesy of ApT Chianciano Terme CONFERENCE VENUE ECOSUD 2009 will take place in the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Chianciano Terme. The Grand Excelsior is a traditional style hotel in the heart of the city, set within attractive grounds and close to all city-centre amenities. Further details regarding local attractions, accommodation booking and travel directions will be available closer to the time of the conference. GETTING TO CHIANCIANO Chianciano Terme is best reached via the Italian cities of Rome, Florence and Pisa. 6 International Journal of Design and Nature and Ecodynamics An International Forum for Interdisciplinary Communication JOURNAL OBJECTIVES The International Journal of Design & Nature and Ecodynamics acts as a forum for researchers from around the world working on a variety of studies involving nature and its signifi cance to modern scientifi c thought and design. Throughout history, many leading thinkers have been inspired by the parallels between nature and human design. Today, the huge increase in biological knowledge and developments in design and systems, together with the virtual revolution in computer power and simulation modelling have all made possible more comprehensive studies of nature. Scientists now have at their disposal a vast array of relationships resulting in laws that have been painstakingly assembled by observation and analysis and span the cosmic scale of space down to the molecular level of genetics. In particular, they have demonstrated the rich diversity of the natural world. Ecodynamics aims to relate ecosystems to evolutionary thermodynamics in order to arrive at satisfactory solutions for sustainable development which is the most important challenge facing society today. It is the intention of the Journal to cover all aspects of ecosystems and sustainable development, ranging from physical sciences to economics and epistemiology. The International Journal of Design & Nature and Ecodynamics opens new avenues for understanding the relationship between arts and sciences. The objective of the Journal is to encourage and facilitate inter-disciplinary communication between scientists in different disciplines, as well as other professionals in academia, research institutions or industry, working on a variety of studies involving nature. JOURNAL THEMES Papers on the following topics that are in accordance with the aims and objectives of the Journal are welcome: Design and Nature Nature and architectural design Thermodynamics in nature Evolutionary thermodynamics Eco-Informatics Natural materials in engineering Mechanics in nature Dynamic modelling and ecosystems Indicators Biosciences Natural resources management Environmental assessment and risk Assessment and management of biodiversity Epistemology Energy conservation and generation Solutions from nature Sustainability studies Social and political sciences Architecture and the built environment Economics Art and aesthetics Philosophy and related sciences HONORARY EDITOR The late Professor I.
