3 Discovering Bucharest Treasure Hunt ac vity Asociația Română pentru Cultură, Educație și Normalitate guided sight-seeing tour presented by ARCEN 1 2 Your hotel is in the immediate vicinity of several historical places in Bucharest. Perhaps some of you will see from your rooms the building across Manuc s Inn. Built between 1806 and 1808 by the wealthy Armenian Emanuel Mîrzaian (called Manuc-bei-prince). The inn occupies a part of the Princely Court, part bought by Manuc in an auc on. It was located in the heart of the old town, in the center of its commercial district, as the names of the nearby streets show. The Princely Court located in the old center of Bucharest was named The Old Court only a er its abandoning in 1775 and the establishment of the New Court. Archeological findings have shown that the area had been inhabited from ancient mes: Geto-Dacian pots have been found, as well as Roman coins, iron and ore da ng back to the tenth and eleventh century (c X-XI). 3 With a li le help from the subway, we will get to our tour s star ng point in Piața Victoriei. Upon exi ng the subway sta on we will no ce several things. The Government building and the Lascăr Catargiu Boulevard. The square in front of the Palace of Government dates back to the 1700s, but nothing from its original se ng has been preserved; it has been completely modified during the communist period. The boulevard provides a linkage between the modernist, concentratred boulevard Magheru and the green areas surrounding boulevards Kiseleff and Aviators. The housing is mostly residen- al, with burgeois villas built one next to another, providing the con nous and balanced structure of the street. Ghica Grădișteanu Palace 6 Photo: Mastermindsro 7 The Romanian Atheneum - This edifice was built for the Romanian Athenaeum Cultural Society and it was meant to be a true temple of the Romanian arts, science and culture. The Society was founded in 1865 from the ini a ve of some of the most important ar sts and scien sts of the country. The Athenaeum is one the most emblema c buildings of the Capital and it was defined as the ideal image of the Romanian people. 6 Treasure hunt rules The treasure hunt event is conceived as a photography contest following three large themes: The fanciest fence The best place in the city The worst place in the city The pictures will be made b ts. Each t will choose a maximum of 6 pictures and send them to their group guide (the communica modality will be established by each group with the nd responsible guide) un of June 2017, hours. The selected pictures will be sent men the category they are running for and the name of the author. The selected pictur ts will be posted on the Facebook page of AsoP Romania and made public. In this context w ts to not take in the selected pictures people who might not agree with the publica e. AsoP will also have the right to further use the pictures to promote or describe the event. Of course anyone is free t te to the guided tours without entering the photography contest. But the contest will be the funniest part of the IFLA Europe Conference and General Assembly, so don't miss it! We thus invite you to discover be er our city full of surprising corners. The winners for each category will be announced rd during the Gala Dinner on 3 June evening. The en re Treasure hunt event will start on 2nd of June at The star ng point for all groups will be at the Europa Royale Hotel, where we will explain the rules and answer ques ons. For some groups public transport will be used. Don t worry about ge ng around; everything is taken in considera on and in charge by the guides.
