Conversion of Gazco Upgradable Controls to Battery Remote Control Ensure that combustible materials are not placed next to or on top of the appliance when using this control. Especially when using the thermostatic version which could turn the appliance on automatically when the room may be unattended. Do not use the thermostatic remote with the open front fires such as the VFC or baskets. This upgrade can be fitted by anyone capable of simple DIY jobs and requires no special training. It is however very important that these instructions are thoroughly understood before attempting the upgrade. Do not open the body of the control valve or loosen any fasteners or pipes not shown in this instruction. If you do not follow these instructions exactly, a fire or explosion may result causing property damage, personal injury or loss of life. If the appliance is left unattended for longer periods (e.g. vacation), the combination control should be turned either off or to pilot position, so that it cannot receive commands from the remote transmitter. Caution: If the appliance is left unattended in operation, in rare cases the receiver could respond to extraneous sound waves, thereby activating the motor and adjusting the flame height. PR0610 Issue 1 (October 2003)

1. GENERAL POINTS 1.1 This conversion will be either for a standard remote control or a thermostatic remote control. 1.2 The standard kit contains the parts shown in diagram 1 and the thermostatic kit contains the parts shown in diagram 2. A = Handset B = Motor C = Receiver D = Connecting wires E = Receiver batteries x 4 F = Handset battery x 1 G = Microswitch (thermostatic version only) 1.3 Tools required for this conversion are a small flat bladed and a small cross head screwdriver. 1.4 This conversion can be fitted to any of the Gazco upgradable control gas appliances. NOTE - the thermostatic version is not to be used with open fires as it could turn the fire on without supervision. 1.5 This upgrade can be fitted either before or after installation of the appliance. NOTE - Stoves must have a minimum 150mm side clearance to allow access for this conversion. 2. CONVERSION OF THE VALVE 2.1 Ensure that the appliance is turned off and that it is completely cold. If the appliance has an electrical connection make sure that this is also turned off and unplugged. 2.2 Find the control valve on the appliance, it should look like the control valve shown in diagram 3. If your control valve does not look like the one shown in this diagram, it may be that you have an appliance that is not upgradable. 2.3 Undo the single screw that secures the control cover, see diagram 3a. 2.4 To release the right hand side of the control cover insert the narrow blade screwdriver into the slot shown in diagram 4, lever it gently and pull from the right hand side at the same time. The cover will now come off, there is a small cylindrical metal spacer inside the cover, this can be discarded. 2.5 If you have the thermostatic version, fit the micro switch shown in diagram 5. NOTE - ensure it is the right way up - the printed side facing you. If you do not have a thermostatic version proceed to Locate the motor on the valve by lifting it up and over the left hand control knob so that the silver motor body sits on top of the valve and the gear on the front of the motor engages with the control knob. See diagram 6. A slight movement of the motor may be required to ensure that it engages correctly with the control knob. 2.7 The control cover should now snap back onto the valve holding the motor in position. Replace the securing screw and tighten gently. See diagram Insert the 4 AA batteries into the receiver as shown in diagram Plug the cable connector onto the receiver as shown in diagram 8A for the standard remote or 8B for the thermostatic remote. Take care to get the connector the right way up and in the position shown Plug the other end of the wires onto the valve, the leads will only fit the correct connector, follow diagram 9A for the standard remote or 9B for the thermostatic remote House the receiver in position and tidy the wires up as shown in diagram 10. Follow the appropriate diagram. BASKET & MTM FIRES - place the receiver on the floor in the coolest place below the fire 2.12 Insert the 9-volt battery into the remote control handset as shown in diagram Using the next section of these instructions, test the operation of the remote control. 3
3. OPERATION OF THE REMOTE CONTROL 3.1 LIGHTING THE PILOT See diagram Ensure that the appliance pilot has been lit. Follow the instructions below There are two control knobs on the valve, the right hand knob controls the pilot ignition and the left knob controls the main burner Ensure that the left hand control knob is pointing to off ( ). If not press the off button ( ) on the handset until the knob rotates fully clockwise, a clicking noise will be heard when it is fully rotated (this is normal) Ensure that the right hand control knob is pointing to off ( ) Press in the right hand control knob and rotate it anti-clockwise until a click is heard (keep pressing in) and the knob is pointing to pilot ( ). The pilot should now light Keep the control knob pressed in for 10 seconds and then release it, the pilot should stay alight If the pilot will not light after repeated attempts, contact the retailer or installer from whom the appliance was purchased. However some appliances may be lit with a match as a temporary measure, refer to the users instructions supplied with the appliance Turn the right hand control to point to main burner ( ). The appliance can now be controlled by the handset. 3.2 TURNING THE APPLIANCE OFF See diagram To turn the appliance off using the handset, press and continue to press off ( ), the main burner will go out leaving the pilot burning To turn the appliance off using the control valve on the appliance, turn the left-hand control knob until it points to off ( ), it will click as you turn it, this is normal. The main burner will go out leaving the pilot burning To turn the pilot off, this must be done using the control valve on the appliance. Turn the right hand control knob until it points to off ( ), the pilot will go out. 3.3 STANDARD REMOTE CONTROL See diagram This remote control can control the gas appliance after the pilot has been lit; it can turn the main burner on and regulate it from low through to high and back again. It can turn the main burner off leaving the pilot burning To light the main burner, press both on buttons ( ) at the same time. The LED on the handset and on the front of the receiver will illuminate every time that a signal is sent or received To adjust the main burner between high and low continue to press both of the on buttons ( ), this will increase the flame height. Press off ( ) to reduce the flame height; continue to press this button to turn off the main burner If the control reaches its maximum rotation a clicking noise will be heard, this is normal To gain more control over the adjustment, whilst holding down one of the on buttons ( ) and giving the other button a single tap, the valve will rotate a single position at a time. This also works with the off button ( ) THERMOSTATIC TIMER REMOTE CONTROL See diagram This remote control can control the gas appliance after the pilot has been lit. In MANUAL MODE it can be used to turn the main burner on and manually regulate it from low through to high and back again. It can also be used to turn the main burner off leaving the pilot burning. In AUTO MODE it will automatically regulate to a pre-set 4
temperature. In TIMER MODE it will turn the fire on and off according to a pre-set programme and automatically regulate the room temperature during the two 'on' periods SETTING THE TIME This can be done immediately after changing the batteries or by pressing timer ( ) and (Auto) at the same time, this will cause the display screen to flash, you are now in the set mode. Press (Auto) to switch between 12 and 24 hour clock. Press ( ) to set the hours and ( ) to set the minutes. Press timer ( ) or wait a few seconds to return to the manual mode SETTING THE DESIRED TEMPERATURE From the manual mode; press (Auto) and hold it down until the display flashes. Use ( ) to increase and ( ) to decrease the temperature that you want maintained in the room. NOTE the display will be either in degrees F or degrees C depending on the clock setting; 12-hour clock has degrees F and the 24 hour clock has degrees C SETTING THE TIMER Press timer ( ) until (P1*) flashes, this is the 'on' time for period one, set the time by using ( ) to set the hours and ( ) to set the minutes. Press timer ( ) again and (P1 ) appears, this is the 'off' time for period one, set the time by using ( ) to set the hours and ( ) to set the minutes. Press timer ( ) again and repeat the above procedure for period 2. Store this information by pressing timer ( ) again SWITCHING BETWEEN MODES To switch from manual to auto mode; push (Auto) the set temperature will be displayed, then the display will switch to the auto mode and display the current room temperature. To switch to the timer mode; push timer ( ) timer will be shown on the display. To switch back to manual mode push either ( ) or ( ) AUTOMATIC OPERATION (AUTO MODE) If the room is cooler than the set temperature, then the remote control will increase the flame height. If the room is warmer than the set temperature then the remote control will reduce the flame height, thereby maintaining a constant temperature. NOTE the temperature is measured at the handset, so for maximum comfort, keep the handset in the part of the room you will be sitting in, away from the direct heat of the gas appliance and cold draughts such as from doors and windows. At any time you can check the set temperature by pressing (Auto) MANUAL OPERATION (MAN MODE) In manual mode to light the main burner, press on ( ) a To adjust the main burner between high and low, continue to press on ( ) to increase the flame height, press off ( ) to reduce the flame height; continue to press off ( ) to turn off the main burner b To gain more control over the adjustment, give either on ( ) or off ( ) a single tap, the valve will rotate a single position at a time TIMER MODE During the heating periods P1 and P2 the appliance main burner will light and the fire controlled in the same way as in Auto mode, automatically maintaining the desired room temperature. When the display shows (P1 ) or (P2 ) for the end of the heating period the remote will turn the valve to the pilot position. You can change to manual control by pressing either on ( ) or off ( ). At any time you can check the set temperature by pressing (Auto), press timer ( ) to return to timer mode. 5
3.5 GENERAL POINTS CHANGING THE HANDSET BATTERY - If (BATT) appears on the display, or the display becomes faint then change the battery as shown in diagram CHANGING THE RECEIVER BATTERY - If the control valve fails to respond to the handset, then it may be necessary to change the batteries in the receiver. See diagram 8. NOTE - On some fires it may be necessary to remove the decorative front to gain access to the receiver IF THE APPLIANCE IS LEFT UNATTENDED - for longer periods of time (e.g. vacations), the control valve must be turned off at the appliance so that it cannot receiver signals from the transmitter Keep these instructions with the appliance. Attach them to the appliance installation and user instructions. 6
