Nuclear Power in Pakistan (1/2) Installed Generation Capacity Oil Gas Hydro Nuclear Others 3.6% 1% 30% 37% 28.4% Total Installed Generation Capacity is MWe
Nuclear Power in Pakistan (2/2) S. Name Location Capacity Type Operation Contract No. 1 KANUPP Karachi 137MWe PHWR 1972 CGE 2 CHASHNUPP-1 Chashma 325 MWe PWR Sept CNNC 3 CHASHNUPP-2 Chashma 340 MWe PWR May 2011 CNNC Percentage Distribution 48% 7% 45% KANUPP CHASHNUPP-1 CHASHNUPP-2
Major I&C Systems of CHASNUPP-1 & 2 S No. System C-1 & C-2 1. Reactor Protection System Reactor Trip System Engineered Safety Features 2. Nuclear Instrumentation System Conventional, Hardwired, Modular 2/4 trip Logic, 26 Trip Parameters 06 actuation system 8 neutron detectors, 03 instrumentation ranges, Conventional signal processing Modules 3. Process and Control Systems Conventional sensors and transmitters Modular, PID controller (KMx Series), PLC 4. In-Core Instrumentation Flux Monitoring Temperature Monitoring 5. Main Control Room (MCR) Hybrid type 30 locations, 03 moveable chambers, Electromechanical insertion 36 thermocouple 6. Plant Computer System (CPC) Only for monitoring
I&C Upgradation and Modernization at C-1 Suppression of False Alarms Addition of Indications and Alarms Revision of Some Alarms Set Point Replacement of Instruments Addition of New Systems
Suppression of False Alarms Some alarms in MCR were continuously lit but do not indicate any process abnormality e.g. some alarms of low flow at pumps outlet but those pumps were not running as they were on standby duty. If the standby pumps come into operation with low flow, this abnormality will not be detected Currently, alarm suppression program is underway 48 alarms have been rectified up to RFO-6
Addition of Indications and Alarms On the basis of operation experience some alarms and indications are provided in MCR, LCR and CPC for example : Components Cooling Water System surge tank A&B liquid level low alarms are provided in MCR Flap close alarms for Auxiliary Feed Water System diesel driven pumps (A & B)are provided in MCR Low pressure alarm of NaOH tank is provided in MCR High pressure turbine vent valves status indication in MCR Oil & winding temperature of main transformer on CPC Main steam safety valves opening status on CPC Water level indication of Reactor Coolant System (during refueling) on CPC Pressure indication from discharge header of Domestic Water Yard Piping Network System in LCR
Revision of Some Alarms Set Point The availability and safety is being improved by revision of some alarms set point for example : High vibration alarm limit (set point) for motor shaft vibration of reactor coolant pumps A&B Alarm and trip set points of turbine differential expansion Set points of main exciter winding temperature of generator Pressure set point of pressure switches KP1 & KP2 of 220 kv GIS air compressors Alarm set point of auxiliary steam header pressure high
Replacement of Instruments To overcome the problem of obsolescence and ageing, some instruments have been upgraded for example : Boron Recycle System flow totalizer Low range pressure transmitter and pressure indicator of Hot Water Production and Distribution System Installation of Higher differential pressure range transmitters in Non-Essential Chilled Water Cooling System Liquid level transmitter at raw water purification system Provision of PC based printing system in MCR for online printing of trends & alarm to replace the obsolete printers Installation of new flow sensor and transmitter at 04 Pumps of Circulating Cooling Water Pumping Station System Some paper recorders in MCR have been replaced with paperless digital recorders
Addition of New Systems Reactor Internal Vibration Monitoring (IVMS) (Commissioned) Design and Engineering of Online Vibration Monitoring System (In Progress) Loose Part Monitoring System (LPMS) (To be installed in Next RFO)
Reactor Internal Vibration Monitoring Requirement of ASME-OM-05 Power range neutron detector signals are used Measures natural frequencies (shell and beam modes) of core barrel motion due to Flow Induced Vibration Core barrel displacements (in mm) Detection of relaxation in core barrel hold-down Spring Detection of possible contact between core barrel and Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) Collection of Reactor Noise Signatures during plant lifetime
I&C Modernization at C-2 General I&C Modernizations HMI Related Improvements Addition of New Systems
General I&C Modernization Communication System on UPS Plant Computer System (CPC) upgraded to state-of-the-art hardware and software Hydrogen Detectors in Battery Room Each Trip Condition Displayed on CPC Illumination level in the control room can be adjusted by the regulating control Recording function has been assigned to CPC
HMI Related Improvements (1/4) Layout of MCR In reference plant C-I, there was no walking space for operator directly from console to control board In C-2, walking space is provided for operator between consoles
HMI Related Improvements (2/4) Operator Ease In reference plant C-I, console are designed for seated monitoring and standing operation In C-2, dimensions of consoles are changed to be suitable for seated operation as well as seated monitoring
HMI Related Improvements (3/4) Elimination of White Alarm Windows In reference plant C-I, there are three types of alarm windows i.e., red, yellow & white Red alarms are of highest priority and white are of lowest Too many alarm windows in MCR cause overcrowding In C-2, white alarm windows are shifted to CPC Some important white alarm windows are converted into yellow alarm windows
HMI Related Improvements (4/4) Large Display Panel The incorporation of large display panels (LDP) is to provide visual aid to the operator Large display panel (LDP) provides dynamic overview display of plant variables and alarm information LDP is located at center of the main control room area at a height such that both operators and the shift supervisor can view it while sitting at their respective consoles Every new plant takes the advantage of advance technologies as compare to the reference plant and hence this is a good practice from HMI point of view
Addition 0f New Systems (1/3) Safety Systems Bypass and Inoperable Status Indication There is no automatic indication system for the bypass and inoperable state of safety system in the C- 1 design. Only the manual tag-out is applied to solve this problem in the MCR Automatic indication for the bypass and inoperable state of safety system is provided in the C-2 design and integrated in the CPC as per RG1.47 The bypass and in-operation status indication of 24 systems are implemented
Addition 0f New Systems (2/3) Loose Part Monitoring System The system is designed to detect a metallic loose part that weight from 0.11 kg to 13.6 kg canalsodetectanimpactwithakineticenergyof0.68 Joules on the inside surface of the reactor coolant system pressure boundary within 0.91 meter of a sensor Employs 16 piezo-electric accelerometers for detection of acoustic bursts (3 RPV Upper, 3 RPV Lower, 4 SG Each, 1 RCP Each) The system is designed to meet the requirements of Regulatory Guide (RG) (1977) and ASME OM S/G. (2000)
Addition 0f New Systems (3/3) Hydrogen Concentration Monitoring System To increase the accident detection capability, this system is added It measures the concentration of hydrogen in the containment atmosphere for accident management, to monitor the efficiency of Hydrogen Recombining System and Hydrogen Mixing System Indications and alarms are provided in the main control room
Conclusion I&C upgradation and modernization are being carried out at NPPs to overcome the problems of ageing, obsolescence and to take the advantages of technological advancements Some upgradation and modernization are based on the feedback of Operators and Reviewers to timely address the future needs and to improve Human Machine Interface Some upgradation and modernization are performed to comply with the Regulatory Requirements All the efforts done in the plants are to enhance plant safety, reliability and availability
