(250) Getting There Hwy 97 north, just barely into the village of Lac La Hache Turn right just before the Hungry Bear Restaurant, following signs to Timothy Lake Stay right at the Rail Lake fork Stay right at the turn to the Timothy Lake Ski Hill (This trip takes about 5-1/2 hours from Vancouver. Cache Creek provides a nice lunchbreak, about 4 hours into the trip) You made it! WELCOME! Getting the House Going Plug in fridge, close doors, slide it back into its recess. Temperature setting should be about right. Adjust the thermostat in the hallway to your comfort level (forced-air furnace is pilot-less) Slide Fan switch to on, to filter all the air and distribute the temperature evenly Turn on the double-breaker for the water-pump (in basement water-room), and open the yellow-handled valve at the base of the large, blue water-pressure-tank Turn on the breakers for the hot-water tanks (breaker panel located in basement) Put your feet up, wait for the fridge to cool, the water to heat, and the house to get warm! Things You Should Know DVD player, VCR and satellite TV are available. Bring your own DVD's, enjoy the modest selection already in the house, or maybe rent from the Husky gas-station in Lac La Hache. Give the house phone number for rentals. Modest selection of tools is available in plastic toolbox above dryer. Garbage must be taken to the dump just south of the village of Lac La Hache. There are no pickups, nor any recycling facilities. Waste-water goes to a septic field; please watch what goes down the drains (ie diapers, feminine hygiene and food scraps should not go down, only quick biodegradables. Normal household chemicals, like laundry and dishwasher soaps are OK). Towels and bed-linens are available, as are cooking and eating utensils. Vacuum, broom, mop are found in the closet in the laundry room Williams Lake is about 60 minutes north on the highway 100 Mile House is about 40 minutes south

X-C skiing, horseback riding, wagon-rides Timothy Mountain has a co-operative ski-hill, with great views. This makes for a nice outing in any season. Can mountain-bike around the ski-hill area in off-season. Barkerville is about 3 hours north. A longish day-trip, but interesting B.C. history.

3 House Notes Fireplaces have adjustable thermostats, and spark (pilot-less) ignition. Especially in the basement, the remote-control can be used in "Auto" mode, to maintain a pre-set temperature: press-and-hold the "Auto" button, until the display blinks now, adjust the temperature you want (ie 71) press "Auto" once more to complete the programming place the remote-control so that it points at the fireplace, to maintain that temperature (ie set it on a table) Water is drawn from the lake, and is medium hardness (harder than Vancouver) Lake water is safe to drink To watch the satellite TV: manually turn on the TV verify that the Satellite receiver is on (orange stripes lit up). Receiver is located in the basement, near the breaker-panel: The tiny satellite-dish icon in the lower left must be green for proper operation press Sat button on remote, near upper-right directly enter the channel-number you want, or Guide to step through listings. Listings take as long as 45min to update after receiver first turned on this listingupdate only takes place when the channel remains fixed Troubleshooting: Subscription includes only the base + HD package, something like 290 channels. Despite this number, many will not display sorry :-( If you try a basic CBC channel like 300, and it says you're not authourized, there's a problem try pressing and holding the power-button on the receiver itself for 10seconds, then releasing. This performs a soft-reset. See if this works. 4 Computers are available, running Windows XP + current updates Log in as visitor, with password timothy The log-in Password Hint will remind you make sure you log out after you are finished don't leave personal information on the computer Internet is through a dial-up connection. When you arrive, the modem is unplugged. It's located in the mud/laundry-room, inside the closet plug in the AC power-cord, wait a couple of minutes for it to come up, and you're good to go: Dialling the ISP automatic when you plug in the modem, the dialing begins; you may have to retry if the browser times out before the connection is established. HANGUP DOES NOT WORK you must manually unplug the modem after you are done, to free up the phone-line. For any Internet work besides browsing, it's best to use a web-browser to establish and test the connection first (ie , SSH, and so on) If you try, and seem unable to establish an Internet connection, you may have to reset the modem: simply pull the power-cord (pictured above), wait several seconds, then re-plug it in. Or, right-click on the taskbar network-icon on the lower-right of the screen, and then (left-) click on Repair There is also wireless coverage throughout (54Mb/s g). Feel free to bring your own computer, and enjoy the deck, or roam freely through the house. No printer :-( if you use your own computer/mail agent, the outgoing SMTP server is: mail.bcinternet.net

6 Riding into the Sunset We hope you enjoyed your stay! The following list will help ensure the security and safety of our house, as well as leaving it ready for the next time it s occupied: Please launder all linens and towels, and re-make beds. It helps to start this before breakfast on your departure day (or, you could bring your own sheets or sleeping bags for speedier departure). A quick vacuuming and kitchen floor wash will clean up those pesky needles TV, DVD player, computers, kettle, toaster, radios unplugged leave satellite receiver turned on thanks! Otherwise, it gets de-authourized Doors and windows secured, blinds down Fridges (kitchen & basement) unplugged, interior quickly wiped, doors propped open Hallway thermostat set about 15 deg C / 60 deg F (main heat during absence) Fireplace thermostats set about 55 deg F / 12 deg C (backup heat no AC needed) Lights out Garbage all packed out, to take to the dump (there are no formalities, no fees. It only takes a few seconds to throw everything into the bins) THANK-YOU! Hope you had a great stay! End-Of-Season Shutdown In addition to the above, please also: Close the outdoor / underground water-shut-off (located just beyond the boat-garage concrete pad). The long wrench for this is stored in the boat-garage. Turn off circuit-breakers for both hot-water tanks Open the bottom drain-taps and empty both hot-water tanks Drain pressure tank??? Drain filter??? Use air-compressor to blow out all water-lines??? Open valves to purge: dishwasher washing-machine all sinks / toilets / showers / tubs No water left out anywhere? Kettle empty? Coffee-maker empty? STA-BIL in the gas? all carbs run til dry? Fuel-shutoffs closed? Til next Spring

7 Start-of-Season Opening Basically, reversing the shutdown, with water occupying most attention: Adjust hallway thermostat to desired temp Close all taps, including the two outside faucets (one front, one rear) Make sure drain on hot-water-tanks are closed Make sure drains on pressure-tank, filter are also closed Open the outdoor / underground water-shut-off (located just beyond the boat-garage concrete pad). The long wrench for this is stored in the boat-garage. In pump-room: Open the main shut-off valve for the entire house (base of water-pressure-tank) Turn on pump, and observe pressure climbing Quickly check throughout the house that all taps are closed, and there are no leaks (from burst pipes, etc. Continue checking as pressure builds!) When water pressure is about 20 pounds or higher, open the kitchen hot-water tap til water runs out (this fills the hot-water-tank). Takes 5 10 minutes. Check throughout the house for any water-leaks!!! Plug in fridge, close doors, slide it back into its recess. While the house is warming, and the water-tank is heating, this is a good time to check for any winter-damage. Doors and windows OK? Eavestroughing OK? Roof / snow-stops OK? etc. You should now have the house up and running!
