3 3 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN Vision Faculty, staff, parents, and students are committed to becoming a sustainable school by: Educating students to develop in wisdom, vision, and drive to create a sustainable society; Modeling sustainable practices throughout the school; Inspiring others to join with us in our commitment to sustainability. Goals 14/15 Remove 100% of recyclables from the landfill waste stream. Reduce all waste. Reduce landfill waste 5% in 14/15. Post and publish costs and quantities for waste disposal, recycling, and reuse on the Sustainable School web pages and the Facilities Moodle page at Send campus wide on this topic during week 35 (3 rd Monday in February).

Avoid aerosol propellants using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or Di Methyl Ether. Recycle 100% of empty aerosol spray cans as scrap metal. Recycle 100% of empty aerosol cans. Eliminate use of aerosols using compressed petroleum gas propellants. After processing at facilities empty aerosol cans are scrap metal. Recycle 100% of aluminum cans & foil in mixed recycling. Recycled aluminum placed in campus mixed recycling bins is taken to Far West Fibers by Walker Garbage Service. Send campus wide on this topic during week 13 (3 rd Monday in September) and week 37 (1 st Monday in March).
6 6 ASEPTIC PACKAGING Individual Actions: Place aseptic packaging in mixed recycling containers. Aseptic processing retains more nutrients, uses less energy and allows processed food to keep for long periods of time without preservatives. The overriding motivation for aseptically packaged foods in plastics or composites instead of metal or glass containers is the major reduction of packaging costs. Alternate material choices, using plastics in place of metals or glass and maximum use of shipping volume when using rectangular packages in place of rounded bottles and cans all contribute to reduced package and shipping costs. (Nelson, Philip E., Principles of Aseptic Processing and Packaging.) 100% of aseptic packaging (milk, juice and soymilk) is recycled in mixed recycling. Recycle 100% of aseptic containers in mixed recycling. Purchase products in bulk containers and use washable ware. Empty aseptic containers are placed in campus mixed recycling bins and taken to Far West Fibers by Walker Garbage Service. Send campus wide on this topic during week 14 (4 th Monday in September).

Reducing the amount of waste paper and cardboard we generate has more impact than increasing the amount we recycle. Cardboard and paper cannot be recycled infinitely. Depending on the type of paper, the individual fibers can only survive intact for perhaps six or seven trips through the energy intensive process required to turn them into new boxes and new sheets of paper. (Adam Minter. Junkyard Planet, Bloomsbury Press, NY, 2013.) Recycle 100% of waste cardboard. Send campus wide on this topic during week 19 (1 st Monday in November). Recycle 100% of cardboard.
