4 IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMMERCIAL USE WHEN USING AN ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE, BASIC PRECAUTIONS SHOULD ALWAYS BE FOLLOWED INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING: READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING THIS MACHINE WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRIC SHOCK, OR INJURY: Do not leave machine unattended when plugged in. Unplug from outlet when not in use and before changing pads or attempting any maintenance or adjustment. If handle switch lever is activated accidentally, high starting torque will cause machine to move and may cause damage or injury. To avoid electrical shock, Use indoors only. Do not use outdoors and do not expose to rain. Do not allow to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when used by or near children. Use only as described in this manual. Use only manufacturer s recommended attachments. Do not use with damaged cord or plug. If machine is not working properly, if it was dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water, return it to a service center. Do not pull or carry by cord, use cord as a handle, close a door on cord, or pull cord around sharp edges or corners. Do not run machine over cord. Keep cord away from heated surfaces. Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp the plug not the cord. Do not handle plug or machine with wet hands. Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all parts of body away from openings and moving parts. Turn off all controls before unplugging. Connect to a properly grounded outlet only. See Grounding Instructions. Do not put hands under base - rotating parts could cause injury. Always keep hands feet and loose fitting clothing away from moving parts to prevent possible injuries. Use care to keep electrical supply cable from contacting moving parts, such as floor brushes or pads. Risk of explosion: Floor sanding can result in explosive mixture of fine dust and air. Use this machine only in a well-ventilated area, free from any flame or match. Do not use machine in areas where flammable and/or explosive vapors or dusts are present. To avoid fires do not use with a flammable or combustible liquid to clean a floor. Make sure voltage and frequency at the wall receptacle correspond with that indicated on nameplate before plugging in machine. Use only a 12 Ga. three-wire extension cable, which have 3-prong grounding type plugs and 3-prong receptacles that accept the plug of the machine.. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS 4

5 GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS This appliance must be grounded. If it should malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk electric shock. This machine is equipped with a cord having an equipment -grounding conductor and grounding plug. The plug must be inserted into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. WARNING: Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. Check with a qualified electrician or service person if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the appliance - if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. This appliance is for use on a nominal 120-volt circuit, and has a grounding plug that looks like the plug illustrated in sketch A. A temporary adapter that looks like the adapter illustrated in sketches B and C may be used to connect this plug to a 2-pole receptacle as shown in sketch B if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adapter should be used only until a qualified electrician can install a properly grounded outlet (sketch A). The green-colored rigid ear, lug, or the like extending from the adapter must be connected to a permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover. Whenever the adapter is used, it must be held in place by a metal screw. Note: In Canada, the use of a temporary adapter is not permitted by the Canadian Electrical Code. 6 WHEN THE MACHINE IS DELIVERED Check the carton carefully for signs of rough handling. Remove the machine from the carton and look for concealed damage. If the machine is damaged, notify the carrier immediately and request an inspection. Be sure to keep the carton, packing inserts, packing lists, and carrier s receipt until the inspector has verified your claim. BEFORE OPERATING THE MACHINE Read the manual carefully and completely before attempting to operate the unit. This manual has important information for the use and safe operation of the machine. FAILURE TO ADHERE TO THESE INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS BODILY INJURY OF PROPERTY DAMAGE. Keep this manual on file and handy. This machine will assure years of satisfactory service if operated and maintained according to recommendations in the manual. WARNING The machine was designed for use on floors as per instructions and recommendations written in this manual. Any deviation from its proper use or purpose and the consequential damage that may occur is the sole responsibility of the end user. GENERAL PRECAUTIONS You must be trained in the operation of this machine before use. Please read this manual carefully and obtain operation instructions from your safety director or your authorized Tornado distributor. Always operate this machine with all of the cable removed from the handle. Failure to do so will upset the precision balance of the machine. Do not use the Floor Machine for scarifying or sanding. Care should be taken to keep cable away from rotating brush. Do not attempt to repair warranted machines. All repairs must be done by a qualified and authorized repair center. Non warranted repairs will be billed back to the owner of the unit. Do not use any replacement parts except those specified in the parts list. Unauthorized parts could cause the unit to malfunction and will void the warranty. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE ABOVE WARNING INSTRUCTIONS WILL VOID THE WARRANTY 6

It is designed exclusively to pick up dirt, dry debris and dust in an indoor environment and is not constructed for any other use. 11 How to Assemble and Operate the Vacuum How to Attach the Handle to the Vacuum Cleaner The vacuum cleaner and the handle are packed separately. 1. After first removing the handle screw, insert handle into the hole on top of the vacuum cleaner. (Fig. 4) 2. Line up the small hole on the handle with the small hole on the vacuum cleaner and insert the screw. Make sure the screw is secured tightly. How to Operate the Vacuum Cleaner 1. To turn the vacuum on, push the switch located on the rear of the unit to the ( I ) position. (Fig. 5) Fig To turn the vacuum off, push the switch located on the rear of the unit to the ( O ) position. NOTE: The brush motor is only activated when the handle is moved back to the working position. Fig. 5 How to Change the Vacuum Bag Always operate the vacuum cleaner with a vacuum bag installed. How to Change the Vacuum Bag 1. Unplug the vacuum cleaner. Remove the bag compartment cover and remove the used bag from the bag holder (Fig. 7). 2. Attach the new vacuum bag onto the bag holder (Fig. 8). 3. Pull the bottom corners of the new vacuum bag (Fig. 9). Fig. 7 Fig Reinsert the tab on the end of the bag compartment cover into the grove on the bag compartment housing. Press it into place and fasten the bag compartment tightly (Fig. 10). Fig. 9 Fig

12 Edge Cleaning Feature The Edge Cleaning Feature provides improved cleaning of carpets near walls and stationary furniture. For maximum edge cleaning, use the right side of the vacuum near walls or stationary furniture (Fig. 11). Fig. 11 Handle Adjustments The handle on this vacuum cleaner can be set to one of three positions upright, working or low. How to Adjust the Handle 1. To release the handle, step on the left rear corner of the vacuum cleaner (Fig. 12). 2. Upright position for when cleaning tools are being used or for storage (Fig. 13). Handle locks in this position. 3. Working position for normal cleaning (Fig. 14). 4. Low position for cleaning under furniture (Fig. 15). Fig. 13 Fig. 12. Fig. 14 Fig

13 Filters Your Tornado vacuum cleaner is equipped with an exhaust filter and a HEPA filter. These filters capture fine dust particles and protect the motor from dirt. It is important to replace the HEPA filter approximately every six months. To Change or Clean the Exhaust Filter 1. Unplug the vacuum cleaner. Remove the bag compartment cover and the bag. 2. Remove the exhaust filter and shake or brush off the dirt (Fig. 16) then replace filter. 3. Replace the bag and bag compartment cover. Fig. 16 To Change the HEPA Filter 1. Unplug the vacuum cleaner. Remove the bag compartment cover. 2. Remove the HEPA filter from the front of the bag compartment. (Fig. 17) 3. Insert a new filter and replace the bag compartment cover. Note: HEPA filters cannot be washed and used again Fig. 17 Self-Adjusting Brush Head Your Tornado upright vacuum cleaner is designed with a Self-Adjusting Brush Head. No manual adjustments are required. The height of the brush head is instantly adjusted to carpet pile height. This self-adjusting feature allows the brush head to float evenly over all carpet pile surfaces. On-Board Tool Cleaning This vacuum is equipped with on-board cleaning tools including a metal telescopic wand, stretch hose, dusting brush and crevice tool. 1. To use the cleaning tools, lift the hose handle straight up from the vacuum (Fig. 18). 2. Extend the wand by pushing the button forward and pulling the smaller wand out of the larger wand (Fig. 19). 3. Attach any of the on-board tools to the end of the wand or if you do not need the wand, any tool can be connected directly onto the hose handle. 4. Position the vacuum cleaner handle in the upright position and turn the ON/Off switch to the ON position (I). Fig 18 Fig

14 How to Replace the Vacuum Belt CAUTION: Unplug the vacuum cleaner before performing any of these steps. How to Remove the Bottom Plate 1. Place the vacuum cleaner in the low position (see page 12). Turn the vacuum over. 2. Slide the clips toward each other (Fig. 20). 3. Remove the bottom plate. How to Replace the Belt 1. Turn the unit over and remove the bottom plate as described in the above section. 2. Lift the belt cover and turn toward the outside (Fig. 21). (CK 14/1 PRO only) 3. Remove the agitator by pulling it straight out. 4. Remove the belt from the agitator and motor pulley. 5. Loop a new belt over the motor pulley and over the end of the agitator. 6. Stretch the belt over the agitator while inserting it back into the brush head housing. 7. Turn the belt cover back over the motor pulley. Make sure cover releases down into the brush head. (CK 14/1 PRO only) 8. Replace the bottom plate by hooking the front end of the plate into the two ribs on the front end of the brush head housing. (Fig. 22) Press the bottom plate into place by sliding the clips away from each other. NOTE: To ensure maximum cleaning efficiency, check the belt regularly to ensure it is in good condition. Replace the belt if it is stretched, cracked or if excessive slipping is occurring.. Fig. 20 Fig. 21 Fig

15 How to Clean the Brush Head Hose CAUTION: Unplug the vacuum cleaner before performing any of these steps. 1. Remove the wand from the wand / hose holder as shown on page 2. Squeeze the tabs on both sides of the quick clean-out port and pull away from the vacuum (Fig. 23). 3. Check above and below the port opening for obstructions. 4. Remove any obstructions. 5. Replace the quick clean-out port by squeezing both tabs and pushing it back into the wand / hose holder. Circuit Breaker Protection Fig. 23 CAUTION: Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner before performing any of these steps. Your new vacuum cleaner is circuit breaker protected to prevent motor damage due to airflow or brush obstruction. Should your vacuum cleaner experience an obstruction, the circuit breaker will trip and safely turn off the motor. To reset circuit breaker: 1. Press the on/off switch to the off position O and unplug the vacuum cleaner cord. 2. Check brush and remove any entangled objects. Remove bottom plate to access obstruction if necessary (see page 9) 3. Check for airflow obstruction and remove obstruction (full bag, clog in brush head hose, clog in wand/hose, clogged filters, etc.) 4.After removing obstruction reset the circuit breaker by pushing the reset button with a pointed object and resume operation (Fig. 24). NOTICE: Do not repeatedly reset circuit breaker button without removing obstruction, motor failure may result and void warranty. 16 For Best Performance Keep machine and all accessories clean and in good operating condition. Change vacuum bags and filters as recommend to maintain optimum cleaning efficiency. Always use genuine bags, filters and parts, as use of other products may result in poor cleaning or filtration performance. Tornado filtration products are designed for maximum performance. Have machine checked periodically by the retailer where you purchased your Tornado vacuum. Store machine carefully in dry area. For optimum cleaning performance and safety, follow your owner s manual.
