The result is a bespoke, modern and fully adapted kitchen available in various finishes. Meeting individual needs, Independence kitchens provide a unique and fully functional room within the home. All kitchens are carefully delivered direct to any UK site by dedicated transport. 8 DESIGN FEATURES This unique kitchen range offers many special features which include: deep recessed plinths to accommodate wheelchair footplates, allowing the user to get closer to the units. Base units are floor mounted on adjustable legs, eliminating the need for wall brackets. A 50mm void is also included at the back of each unit to accommodate pipe work. PLEASE NOTE: A void is not provided on L shaped corner units. Wall units are supplied with adjustable wall fixings. All cabinets are colour co-ordinated with the doors to provide an aesthetically pleasing finish to the client s kitchen. Pull down basket Fold out ironing board Convenient level pan shelf Easy access low carousels APPLIANCES LAYOUT The great advantage of the Independence kitchen is that a wheelchair user can run his or her wheelchair under the workspace, allowing full usage of the workstation areas. Unit heights are calculated ergonomically to give optimum reach and comfort. Low level wall units are within reach with specially designed doors, hinged to clear the face and can be fitted with pull down baskets when required. Base units also provide easy access, with the options of carousels or pull out baskets. Easy access corner cupboards WORKSTATIONS Wire baskets with telescopic shelf runners A range of appliances complement the AKW Independence kitchen. Appliances have unique features such as side opening ovens, hobs with front controls and an oven shelf which utilises telescopic runners with an anti-tilt device for easier access. These are the areas within the Independence kitchen where specific jobs can be done, with the minimum of movement. 1. Food storage and preparation areas with fridge, freezer and sink 2. Built-in, side opening, single oven 3. Hob extractor and pull out storage drawers The last two workstations can be linked successfully in a smaller layout. These basic areas can be used in many configurations of the Independence kitchen. The free space beneath the surfaces allows the wheelchair user to change workstations with ease. In all kitchens, corner carousel units, pullout tables and bridging units can make full use of all available space while maintaining workstations at the important hob and sink positions. 9 FLEXIBILITY Storage units, single drawers and large drawer storage units can all be incorporated in the kitchen, 170 hinges on cupboards (where applicable) provide even further accessibility. A pull out ironing board takes up just the top drawer of a three drawer unit or is fitted into some worktop bridging units. Wall units are only 350mm above the work surface - making them easier to reach and open. Flexible Rise & Fall Units are also available see page 244 for further information. The clients requirements are integrated into the design to give the wheelchair user a kitchen to suit their exact needs and lifestyle. SPECIFICATION FEATURES Durability and strength are big considerations, therefore only 18mm thick materials are used for the cabinets and doors. As well as doors faced with quality laminate and a 3mm bonded lipping we are now able to offer a new range of doors manufactured from MDF and foil wrapped. See page 245 for the eight colour options. Drawers are soundly constructed with backs and bases 18mm thick and metal sides and runners. There is a wide choice of laminates for doors, cabinets and for the work tops themselves (see page 245). 14 RISE & FALL UNITS Operated manually by cranked lever or electrically by switch control, AKW Rise and Fall units offer a variable work height for the wheel chair or ambulant user. Ideal for multi-user kitchens. Available as a straight or corner unit, floor mounted with 4 or 5 legs, its durable construction provides a frame that is completely stable. All units have individually height adjustable feet to accommodate uneven floors. Rise and fall units are free standing eliminating the need for wall fixings. Each unit is supplied with moulded feet which can be bolted or screwed to the floor (depending on floor construction). Bolts/screws not included. Available in white.
