THE HK500, HK300 & HK150 MOBILE GLYCOL HEATING SYSTEM

FASTER, SAFTER, LOWER COSTS WITH HEAT KING GROUND THAWING Tamarack Industries presents the Heat King Mobile Glycol Heating System - a faster, safer way to prepare foundation sites and cure concrete in cold weather. Heat King also saves on labor, speeds preparation, and lowers energy costs by as much as 80%. COMPUTER CONTROL The heart of the Heat King is its computer controlled system makes it simple to operate, continuously monitors all functions, and more efficiency starts the system. The computer sends startup signals at delayed intervals to each component in the system. Once each unit passes its high amp draw startup phase, the next component is powered up. All components are linked to corresponding lights on the control panel giving operators the ability to easily monitor all essential functions. CSA CERTIFIED The entire Heat King system is certified by the CSA and complies with UL standards for quality and safety assurance Evenly place the loops on an area of frozen ground up to 11,000 square feet. Then cover the hoses with a poly vapor barrier and insulating blankets to keep the heat and moisture directed into the ground. The two coil heaters warm the environmentally friendly propylene glycol in the reservoir to 180 degrees F. The field pump then circulates the heated glycol through the field hoses and back to the reservoir for re-heating. Now you are ready to thaw up to one foot of ground per day The environmentally friendly propylene glycol/water mixture is pumped through a continuous loop. Only heat goes into the ground. In the event a hose is cut the need for an environmental cleanup is unlikely Heat King s efficient coil heating system is designed for portability and rugged applications compared to boiler style heaters that are intended for stationary use. The Heat King uses only centrifugal pumps for the field and circulation loops. Safer and more reliable than positive displacement pumps, they are engineered to eliminate dangerous pressure situations. Each Heat King powered reel holds all of the field hoses. Operation is controlled by a heavy duty CSA & UL approved foot switch leaving the operations hands free to control the hose. The Heat King s reservoir is large enough to store all of the glycol in the system. In other systems the hoses are used to hold the glycol. This can pose a problem on concrete curing jobs where the hoses are going to be left in the slab. With the Heat King, the glycol can easily be blown back to the reservoir by using the on board air compressor. The Heat King s trailer features a rugged uni-body design and lb torsion axle for better towing. All doors can be locked during operation, protecting the Heat King and any tools or equipment inside from tampering or theft. Two powerful 250,000 BTUH burners. Fuel oil pre-heaters increase efficiency and insure cold weather startup. The Heat King 500 s design uses two burners rather than one which provides redundancy not found in competitors machines. In the unlikely event that one of the burners go out the second burner can continue running providing enough heat to save the job until both burners are running again. USE YOUR HEAT-KING FOR SPACE HEATING! For even more flexibility add HX-200 Heat Exchangers to your Heat-King System. Place them in the area to be heated, and connect their hoses to your Heat-King. Then heated glycol solution is pumped to the Heat Exchangers where it flows through their radiators and then back outside to the Heat King for reheating. Only clean, dry, safe heat is left in the building. SIMPLE & SAFE USER CONTROLS The Heat King features digital temperature control and monitoring. With the touch of a button on the control panel the Heat King s output temperature can be changed in 1 increments anywhere between degrees F. This provides the exceptional temperature control needed for proper concrete curing. Other machines use manual thermostats, which are inaccurate, difficult to adjust, and do not provide the temperature range to safely cure concrete. The glycol return temperature gauge is also digital thereby providing more precise monitoring of the thawing and curing temperatures. By monitoring the return temperature for changes the operator can tell what, if any, corrective action needs to be taken as weather changes over the course of the job.

HEAT DISTRIBUTED MORE EVENLY HEAT KING VS. CONSTRUCTION HEATERS The Heat King can come with 2, 4 or lengths of hose. So by the time the glycol reaches 700 it is back in the system being reheated. With most competitive machines there are only one or two 1500 loops. With more than twice as far to go, the glycol is much cooler in the last half of their loops. By using more lengths of shorter hose the Heat King can provide a higher and more consistent temperature to the field. Having more loops means that you can more easily put the heat where you need it, and each of the 8 loops has its own shut off valve for even greater control. Heat King can thaw up to one foot of frozen ground per day. The Heat King system works so well because it uses the moisture content of the soil to carry the heat down into the ground. Space heaters usually thaw the first foot of ground quickly but further progress is slowed causing time delays and high fuel expense. Another advantage of the Heat King system is that there is no need for expensive enclosures. Simply lay the hoses on the ground with a layer of poly vapor barrier and insulation blankets. Heat King burns a fraction of the fuel of traditional construction heaters and thawing is done in a fraction of the time so crews can get on the job faster. Heat King is also safer because there is no open flame and temperatures and pressures are much lower HEAT KING 2, 4 or LENGTH HOSES COMPETITION 1 or LENGTH HOSE(S) COST COMPARISON Heat King vs. Traditional Space Heaters (Typical cost to thaw 4 of frost on 11,000 sq. ft job) Number of Heaters Number of Days HEAT KING HK500 SPACE HEATERS 1 Heat King 3-500,000 BTUH Heaters Type of Fuel Diesel / Heating Oil Propane Fuel Consumption / Hour Fuel Consumption / Day Fuel Cost / Unit Fuel Cost / Job 2.2 Gallons (at 75% burn time) 23 Lbs / Hr / Heater 53 Gallons 1650 lbs $3.75 / Gallon $1.33 / lb $200 - $800 $43,890 - $65,000 CONCLUSION Of course fuel costs may be different in your area, but the difference in fuel consumption alone pays for the Heat King purchase or rental in no time. Now with a predictable way to thaw ground you can reduce idle labor and equipment costs, more accurately quote a job, and get on with construction up to 6 times faster! QUICK DISCONNECTS ON MANIFOLDS FOR UNPARALLELED FLEXIBILITY GROUND HEATER SYSTEM 6% HEAT LOSS HOT AIR SYSTEM 85% HEAT LOSS The field hoses on the Heat King have quick couplers with check valves at both ends that plug into the supply and return manifolds. This prevents glycol from leaking during connection and disconnection of hoses. Should the Heat King need to be moved during a job simply quick disconnect the hoses from the manifolds and move the unit. The field hoses in many competitive machines are permanently fixed, making them more susceptible to damage when unwinding the hose and very difficult to move in the middle of a job. For further flexibility, a set of remote manifolds can be added to the Heat King, allowing you to run your hoses off of manifolds are up to 100 away from the unit. 4 WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU FEEL ABOUT WINTER CONSTRUCTION 208 FT 50 FT RETURN MANIFOLD FLUID RETURNS FROM FIELD heat king HEATER PUMP reservoir SUPPLY MANIFOLD DUAL COIL HEATERS FIELD PUMP HEAT KING VS. CONSTRUCTION HEATERS Heat King s unique double loop design provides increased reliability and more consistent heat for better control. The two loops in the system are referred to as the heater loop and the field loop. In the heater loop, glycol is pumped from the reservoir. In the field loop, heated glycol is pumped from the reservoir through the field hoses that are laid out to do the thawing or curing and then back to the reservoir for re-heating. On the output side the large amount of preheated glycol in the reservoir helps to provide tighter control of the temperature for concrete curing applications. Burners cycle on and off according to their temperature control. In competitive heaters, the field temperatures can fluctuate drastically depending on whether the burners are firing or not at a given time. This illustration shows the remarkable coverage you can achieve with the Heat King. From 2,800 sq feet to 11,200 sq feet of thaw power! The Heat King s computer controls the firing of the burners according to the temperature of the glycol in the reservoir not the heater. This reduces the wide temperature fluctuations seen with other heaters and provides the tighter temperature control needed to properly cure concrete. Boiler shock occurs when the difference in temperature between the glycol going into and coming out of heater is too high. This can damage or even destroy the heater. By adding two loops and a large reservoir to our design we have provided a buffer to lower that severe difference in temperature, thereby eliminating this condition. In competitive machines, cooled glycol is pumped directly from the field into the heater, creating a high chance of boiler shock.

Principles of Ground Thawing The Soil Soil particles do not freeze, it is the moisture around the particles that freezes. Think about a bucket of pea gravel. If it is dry, it can be at 40 F and it is still as easy to move the stones around as if it were +70 F. Now fill the bucket with water to the top of the gravel and let it freeze. Now the whole thing is as hard as a rock! When we are thawing ground, we are thawing the water around the soil particles. It takes a lot of energy to change snow or ice to liquid water. If there is any snow or ice on the thaw site, remove it mechanically. It is far more efficient than trying to melt it with the Heat King. Save all of the energy for thawing the ground, not melting surface ice and snow. Frozen ground is a great barrier for water flow. Complete the Thaw. If you do not let the ground thaw all of the way down, the water that has melted will have no where to go, so it will stay on the surface. Once the frost has been fully removed, the water will drain back down to the water table, and the site will not be as muddy. Heat Transfer Water in its liquid form is a great conductor of heat. It is much better than air. Think about the air in a warm oven. You can put your hands in a warm oven to get out a plate of food, even if the oven is at 200 F. If you put your hands in water that is at 200 F even for a couple of seconds you will scald yourself. The Heat King uses this 2 ways, first to transfer heat from heater to the ground, and then to transfer heat from the surface to the lower levels of ground. Heat does not necessarily rise, it moves from warm things to cold things. Sit on a steel bench in your underwear in winter and you will never forget this fact! The steel is cold, you are warm, the heat goes from you to the bench, even though the bench is below you. Hot air rises because it is lighter than cold air, and this is why some people think heat always rises. It takes a lot of heat energy to change water from liquid to vapor. If this water vapor escapes, it takes all of that heat with it. Rather than let it vent, convert the vapor into water so that it can go back down into the ground and continue the thawing process. When ground thawing, ALWAYS use a vapor barrier. Don t let anyone tell you that because the insulating blankets have poly covering that they are good enough. They probably are not. Few things will slow a thaw more than if water vapor is venting. Another nice benefit is if you put the vapor barrier down before the hoses, it will keep the hoses much cleaner when the thaw is complete. 2

GROUND THAWING HEAT KING THAW PLAN Remove all the surface ice and snow from the site Determine the depth of the frost FROST VAPOR BARRIER FROZEN GROUND Place a polyethylene vapor barrier over the frozen ground. Failure to do so will dramatically lengthen the time required to complete the thaw Place hoses on the area to be heated. Spacing the hoses is determined by the frost depth. Generally, use all of the hose on the reel, even if it is not needed. This will speed the thaw. Preheat the Heat King to 180 degrees F. R15 INSULATION BLANKETS VAPOR BARRIER Place insulation blankets over the hoses. Blankets should be poly clad. The more blankets the better, but they should provide an R factor of R15. If it is above 25 F and there is less than 2 feet of frost R10 is recommended. Start the thaw. Do not stop until all of the frost is removed of the water will not be able to drain down to the water table. 3

GROUND THAWING HEAT KING THAW PLAN HOSE LAYOUT frost depth hose spacing apart 4 16 apart apart With this configuration and ideal soil conditions you can expect a thaw of 1 per day for the first 3 and 1/2 per day to 6. Some overriding factors which slow the rate of thaw are: Soil Compaction If the area to be thawed is compacted the rate of thaw may slow to 1/2 per day or less. Soil Moisture If the moisture content in the soil is low as in the case of dry clay, the rate will slow to 1/2 per day. The same is true for soil where the moisture content is very high. As in the case of saturated silt, the rate of thaw may slow to 1/2 per day or less. Outdoor Temperature The outdoor temperature can also effect the rate of thaw. If there are high winds and the temperature is at or below -30 F, add hay bales on top of the blankets for further insulation. These are general guidelines to follow for optimum performance of the Heat King under typical operating conditions. Extreme soil or weather conditions may call for different configurations. Call Tamarack Industries if you need further help with your thaw plan. Always have your structural or civil engineer approve your plan. 4

Principles of Concrete Curing Concrete does not dry; it cures. This is a chemical reaction that puts out heat, especially during the first day. The warmer the concrete the faster it cures. When it is frozen or is very cold, it stops curing altogether. Concrete goes through several stages during it s use. It comes to the site in a liquid or plastic form when it can be placed, consolidated, screened and bull floated. After an initial set (6-8 hours at F) it can be finished through floating, and troweling or brooming. Final set is usually another 6 hours at 70 F. It is now hard, but far from fully cured. It continues to cure and gain strength as time goes on, so long as it is warm enough. After 6 or 7 days at F concrete has generally achieved 75% of its design strength. At this point forms can be stripped and loads applied. After 28 days concrete has achieved its design strength, although it will continue to cure and gain strength for up to a year. Conditions needed for a good cure Moisture The concrete curing process uses up water, therefore it must have moisture to continue curing. If concrete gets too hot, the moisture will evaporate and it will stop curing. This is why we don t run the Heat King at 180 F during curing. A temperature of F The lower the temperature, the slower the cure. This wastes time on the project. There is also a risk of freezing. If concrete freezes before the final set (about 12 hours at 70 F) it may have to be removed. If concrete freezes after the initial set, it will stop curing. With the Heat King you can protect the concrete from freezing, and maintain the correct temperature to keep the concrete curing. Goals of Concrete Curing The goals in concrete curing in cold conditions are: Don t let the concrete freeze Keep the concrete above 65 F so that it cures properly and quickly Keep the concrete below 80 F so that it won t bake and loose moisture 5
