2 DESIGNER Amirllin Kliche+Cucina 489 Route 17 South Paramus, NJ 076S Fit for a Gourmand W HEN THE OWNERS of this NYC dwelling decided to move their primary residence from the New Jersey suburbs to their city apartment, they had to capitalize on much-needed space. Since they love to entertain and have a large family who visits often, they purchased the two adjacent apartments and combined the space into one large dwelling. One of the first challenges was to enlarge the standard city kitchen to create an epicurean creation to suit their needs. For this purpose, they hired Amir Ilin with Kiiche+Cucina, who collaborated with the couple's architect, Eric Schiller PC. Together, this design team turned the homeowners' dreams into reality. Once Schiller moved walls around and created the space, llin sat down with the homeowners to decipher their culinary wish list. Since this was not their first kitchen, they knew what they wanted, so Ilin's task was simply to make it all work together while looking great. Collectively, the architect, homeowners, and llin chose the color palette using custom color samples llin ordered from Pedini in Italy. The selection includes a high-gloss metallic silver lacquer that complements the glass applied to some doors, as well as on the backsplashes throughout. 4 DESIGNER Randall Shaw Nordic Kitchen & Baths Inc Veterans Blvd. Metairie, LA Decidedly Modern AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA flooded this property's previous home, the unsalvageable structure was torn down, leaving the homeowner starting from scratch. As rebuilding commenc~d, the client wanted to allocate special attention to the kitchen area to ensure it turned out as practical as it is pretty and with all the accoutrements conducive to entertaining. He also wanted the layout and look to complement the home's unique architecture while also still shining in its own right. Up for the task: Randall Shaw of Nordic Kitchen & Baths Inc. Shaw's design delivers a major aesthetic impact while minimizing flourishes. High-gloss back cabinetry along the perimeter and on the oversized island stands in stark contrast to the white porcelain tile flooring and expanse of white on walls and soaring ceiling. The dark cabinetry casts no shadows on this space's style thanks to its openness. High-end stainless steel appliances, linear chrome hardware, and an eccentric chandelier contribute to the contemporary style quotient. Double dishwashers and warming drawers ease entertaining duties. And a large hood takes center stage descending from the ceiling and reflecting the T-shaped glass-block backsplash. It's these details that make this decidedly modern design a piece of art worthy of the home's architecture. 6 Modern Makeover FOR THIS CHICAGO-AREA couple, the kitchen was definitely the hub of the home but was lacking the functionality and style to truly be called the heart of the home. To transform the space into a kitchen they could love, they hired local designer Eric Small ofpoggenpohl who collaborated with interior designer Karen Bengel, ASID, of Milieu and Victoria Ellis of Ellis Consulting, Lighting and Architecture. One of the main challenges he faced when he began designing was incorporating all the appliances the clients needed without overwhelming the space visually. His solution for a seamless look: By integrating some appliances such as the hood, they blend beautifully with the cabinetry and prevent the area from appearing too appliance heavy. The cabinetry is a client favorite. Its distinct Porsche Design framework incorporated into the frozen-green glass cabinets plays beautifully against the bookmatched Swiss Pear wood that stretches around the island and runs vertically on the tall block. Functional features include hidden outlets located on the underside of the shelf and electronic drawer openers with motors set on a switch to allow for future childproofing. In the end, this modern makeover made the layout and look love match the homeowners desired.
