M MW What is Legionella? It is a respiratory infection which is fatal in 5-20% of cases, caused by the Legionella bacteria. he people most at risk are elderly smokers, people with respiratory problems or those with weakened immune systems. Legionella bacteria develop in the warm water found in pipework and central heating systems, but only become dangerous when they are inhaled in aerosol format, as particles suspended in water droplets (i.e. aerosol). hey spread into the lungs, and are absorbed by the immune system, and rapidly proliferate in white blood cells. Legionella is treated by antibiotics (Macrolide). he World Health Organisation (WHO) cite the risk levels as,000 CFU* Legionella per litre of water (50 for hospitals). * Colony Forming Units Which installations are at risk? he installations most at risk are those which provide the ideal environment for Legionella to develop i.e. stagnant water between C, with a peak temperature between C, and deposits such as scale, rust, mud, etc.). he alert level to undertake treatment is,000 CFU of Legionella pneumophilia / litre of water. For high risk patients (with suppressed immune systems) in the hospital environment, the concentration level of Legionella will be maintained beneath the alert level for water withdrawn, in securing the points-of-use (independent and instant production of hot water, 2 micron terminal microfilters, etc.). Current Curative reatments are Ineffective. - chemical shock: an chlorine injection 0 mg/litre for 8 hours. - thermal shock: circulating hot water at 70 C for 30 minutes.. hese treatments only have a short term effect: he system can be very quickly recolonised within 3-4 weeks. In corroded storage tanks and installation dead-legs, Legionella bacteria can develop in the scale and biofilm, finding a refuge which helps them to resist temperature changes and bactericidal disinfectant solutions. Following a curative treatment, there is a risk that the biofilm will spread in the system, allowing Legionella bacteria to colonise new areas after the treatment. 2. hey can have a detrimental effect on the distribution and drainage system which are subject to extreme conditions. It is essential to ensure that the system will withstand thermal expansion of the materials (pipework, etc.), and the temperature and the type and dose of the disinfectants. (For example: damage caused by a PE sleeve joint becoming detached between the between the floor trap and a shower tray manifold, following a disinfection at 70 C.) 3. here are significant risks to users when the treatments are taking place: - the risk of 3rd degree burns during thermal shocks. - the risk of poisoning during the chemical shock treatment. 4. hese operations are costly and difficult to undertake fully at all points in the system (various deposits, dead-legs, heat loss, etc.) requiring the water supply to be out-of-service. Preventative treatment is an effective means of fighting against the risk associated with Legionella. Legionella bacteria are destroyed above 60 C and can not multiply above 47 C. he solution is to generate and store hot water at temperatures above 65 C and to distribute hot water in the circulating loop at 55 C. Hot and Cold water should be mixed as close as possible to the discharge points, using one or more thermostatic mixing valves per distribution branch (PREMIX). We recommend that all buildings open to the general public should monitor for Legionella. Recent regulations agree that the only way to limit the development of Legionella bacteria is to produce and deliver hot water at higher temperatures. he risk of scalding in healthcare facilities is therefore significantly increased: - at 50 C: 3rd degree burns within 00 seconds. Healthy adult skin will suffer burns in 30 seconds. - at 60 C: 3rd degree burns within 5 seconds on average (5 seconds for an adult, -2 seconds for children). o comply with these regulations, we therefore recommend installing a thermostatic mixing valve: - PREMIX Security at the boiler outlet to lower the temperature of the hot water distributed (i.e. from 65 to 55 C). - PREMIX Comfort upstream and as close as possible to the point-of-use to avoid any risk of scalding (i.e. 45 C maximum). Guidance for Monitoring Legionella Bacteria which requires the bacteriological quality of water to be monitored in all work places by a UKAS accredited laboratory (Source: L8 Legionnaires Disease: he control of legionella bacteria in water systems, Health & Safety Executive, 2004): Monitoring should take place: Monthly in water systems that are treated with biocides and where hot water storage and distribution temperatures are lower than those recommended to control Legionella (Hot water should be stored at 60 C and distributed at 50 C). Weekly in systems where a consistent anti-bacterial treatment regime has not been achieved. he system and treatments must be reviewed to ensure a consistent regime is achieved. Analysis for Legionella should also be undertaken in hospital wards with at risk patients e.g. hospital wards with immunocompromised patients. Samples should be taken as follows: - Cold water system - from the cold water storage tank and the furthest outlet from the tank. - Hot water system - from the calorifier outlet; the return supply to the calorifier; the base of the calorifier where the drain valves are fitted; and the furthest outlet from the calorifier. Samples may also be required in sensitive areas e.g. hospital wards with at risk patients. Areas considered at risk of contamination by Legionella bacteria include outlets that can produce hot water in aerosol format, particularly showers and hand sprays. Hot Water emperature Control At the hot water production outlet the hot water temperature should be always above 55 C. In the hot water storage facility the water must be raised to a high temperature to at least once every 24 hours: either for 2 minutes at 70 C; 4 minutes at 65 C, or 60 minutes at 60 C. At all points in the distribution system the hot water temperature must be equal to or over 50 C with the exception of the final supply pipes to the point-of-use. he final supply pipes from group thermostatic mixing valves to the point-of-use must contain less than 3 Litres of water. he maximum hot water temperature at the point-of-use is 50 C in any room used for washing or as a bathroom, 60 C in other rooms and 90 C in kitchens with appropriate notices. Note: Methods for monitoring and analysing the levels of Legionella in hot water storage and distribution systems will vary by country. You must comply with current local regulations and water byelaws set by the appropriate regulatory bodies in your own country

3 General Features echnical Advantages 65 C Circulating loop M MW Designed for commercial applications, the PREMIX group thermostatic mixing valve delivers a highly stable blend of mixed water supply at the desired temperature. It enables simultaneous supply to a large number of sanitary points-of-use (showers, washbasins, etc.) Fast to react, it regulates the hot water in the system, maintaining a constant temperature regardless of variations in pressure, flow rate and temperature in the system. he mixing valves benefit from the PREMIX technology (automotive thermo-reactive cell technology) providing precise temperature control with a highly effective performance in comparison with current technologies i.e. bi-metal, double pilots, etc. COMFOR he PREMIX thermostatic mixing valve ensures a constant temperature regardless of variations in pressure or flow rate in the system. he response is immediate for all models. PREMIX anticipates and corrects fluctuations in pressure and temperature to ensure user's comfort and safety. ANI-SCALDING SECURIY Automatic safety feature ensures that the hot water supply is shut-off if the cold supply is interrupted. emperature limitation: a locking ring limits the maximum temperature at the outlet (safety device). he temperature control is pre-set at the factory at 40 C and the installer can change the setting by adjusting the limiting ring. PREMIX provides security against scalding. ANI-LEGIONELLA PREVENAIVE & PERMANEN SOLUION o avoid any risk of Legionella developing the preventative solution is to ensure that hot water is maintained above 55 C at all times and at all points in the distribution system. Install a thermostatic mixing valve as close as possible to the point-of-use. Maintain the hot water temperature above 50 C. PREMIX prevents the risk of bacteria proliferation. We recommend a circulating loop that maintains the hot water temperature above 55 C. Operation he thermostatic element submerged in the heart of the mixing chamber reacts rapidly to every temperature variation. Constantly in motion, it expands or contracts with changes in flow rate or pressure to control a sliding valve that opens and closes the hot and cold water inlet ports or vice versa. he piston travel is limited to mm, operating in high levels of precision. As the mixed water temperature rises, the thermostatic element expands and pushes the sliding valve down. his immediately restricts the passage of hot water and opens the cold inlet. As the mixed water temperature falls, the thermostatic element contracts and the sliding valve is pushed upwards by the balancing spring. It immediately restricts the passage of cold water and opens the inlet of hot water. In case of a failure in cold water supply, the thermostatic element expands instantly and the sliding valve closes the hot inlet. he outflow is stopped instantaneously preventing the user from scalds and thermal shock. he PREMIX mechanism uses technological advances developed in the aerospace and car industries to create a simpler, more accurate and more reliable valve than those using older technology. Minimising the number of moving parts in the mechanism reduces the requirement for maintenance. he PREMIX valve offers a real competitive advantage. Long Life and Reliability he automotive thermostatic cell of the PREMIX is located in the heart of the mixing chamber. his position enables superior sensitivity to hot and cold flows and water pressures. It optimises the regulation of both hot and cold water supplies. he PREMIX range is covered by a 0 year warranty against any manufacturing defects. Precise emperature Control PREMIX valves are factory set to a nominal temperature of 40 C ±. hey are precise to one degree in the recommended range of flow. he control knob enables simple temperature. he control knob can be limited at the desired temperature in a tamperproof position. Minimal Pressure Loss he PREMIX mechanism (without hydraulic relays) enables direct circulation of water between inlets and outlet. his reduces the pressure loss and maintains flow rate to the outlet to ensure excellent performance at low, medium and high pressures. Minimum Maintenance he internal working is designed to be simple with a minimum number of moving parts. he scale-proof mechanism is corrosion resistant. Recommended maintenance: Carry out regular mixed water temperature checks test and antiscald failsafe. Easy and Low Cost Maintenance Simple cartridge mechanism is easy to change, accessible from the front without having to remove the whole mixing valve. Filters and non return valves are accessible from the exterior without having to remove the mechanism. Comprehensive Range at Competitive Prices PREMIX products are available in four sizes (from 3/4"BSP(M) to "/2 BSP(M)) with a range of maximum rates between lpm. Optional isolating ball valves with test points and strainers are available. he PREMIX Solution PREMIX Security: for hot water circulating loops. Install at the hot water production outlet (55-90 lpm adjustable from C) : > 5% energy savings: minimises heat loss (much less heat loss in a circulating loop at 55 C than in a system that does not circulate at 70 C). > Helps to prolong the life of the system (maintaining hot water in a non-circulating loop > 65 C leads to the premature aging of the installation (wears out and scale builds up more quickly). > Reduces the risk of scalding by reducing the temperature at the point-of-use. > Regulates the wide variations in temperature that result from the hot water production equipment. PREMIX Comfort: to supply 6-40 points-of-use. Install upstream of the installation (55-90 lpm, adjustable from C) : > Prevents the risk of scalding by lowering the hot water temperature at the point-of-use. > Ensures a constant temperature at the point-of-use (regulates fluctuations). PREMIX Compact: to supply 2-0 points-of-use*. PREMIX Security PREMIX Comfort Install upstream of the valve (9-23 lpm. adjustable from C) : > Prevents the risk of scalding by lowering the hot water temperature at the point-of-use. > Ensures a constant temperature at the point-of-use (regulates fluctuations). Sizing the appropriate PREMIX taking into account the PROBABLE FLOW RAE and pressure loss: PREMIX. Select the PREMIX size (3/4", ", etc.) according to the total probable flow rate of the installation. 2. Check the PREMIX pressure losses Having established the dynamic pressures at the group thermostatic mixing valve inlets, and the required residual pressure for supplying the installation, use the adjacent chart to select the correct size of PREMIX based on the associated pressure drop. Example: for a 50 lpm probable flow rate, the PREMIX 3/4" records a 2.4 bar pressure loss as opposed to 0.9 bar for the PREMIX ". Note: For supply pressures at 3 bar (recommended), the pressure drop should not exceed bar. Chart of pressure losses: Dynamic pressure drop when operated under varying flow rates. Reminder: Also check pipe work pressure losses (e.g. different floor levels, extended supply pipes, etc.). he above information is for guidance only. Specifiers and contractors must select thermostatic valves appropriate for the application and pipe sizes. his information is not contractual and can not supersede the designer's specifications. 7 4 Water Controls with Duty Flush Water Controls with Duty Flush PREVENING WAER SAGNAION In healthcare facilities to overcome the risk of Legionella we recommend: Avoid stagnation and ensure that water circulates. In systems without circulating loops (dead-legs, supply pipes for points-of-use that are used infrequently), stagnant water that is held at temperatures below 50 C can lead to the development and multiplication of the micro-organisms responsible for infections such as Legionella. o avoid water stagnation, we recommend installing water controls with an automatic duty flush at the end of each installation branch: they will automatically flush the final pipework (not in a circulating loop) to avoid any bacterial development. Anti-bacterial duty flush: Automatic duty flush every 24 hours after the last use. All our electronic water controls are programmed with an automatic duty flush to avoid water stagnation in the pipework. Anti-bacterial duty flush Automatic duty flush (~ 45 seconds every 24 hours after the last use): avoids water stagnation and the development of bacteria in the pipework. Voluntary mode (230/2V models): Voluntary closure by passing a hand in front of the sensor, or continuous flow for 30 minutes (specifically for surgical protocols, or to evacuate the pipes voluntarily). (Duty flush for minute prevents water stagnation and the development of bacteria in the pipework = risk prevention). - Anti-scalding safety: immediate HW shut-off in case of supply failure. - Comfort: constant temperatures and precise temperature control. - 80% water savings: automatic shut-off and set flow rate. - Vandal proof and limited maintenance. > We recommend installing a floor trap (see p. 9) and soap dish (see p. 88). /2" Electronic Mixer or ap H.25 L.45 Ref.s & (see page 37) Mains supply 230/2V (495444RP) 6V battery-operated (495446) Electronic Mixer or ap H.380 L.200 Ref.s 495 or 445 (see page 38) Mains supply 230/2V (495445) 6V battery-operated (495446) Wall-mounted SOAP DISH Invisible fixings. matt chrome-plated ABS bright chrome-plated ABS Electronic Mixer or ap H.0 L.40 Ref.s 378MCH & (see page 37) Mains supply 230/2V (495444RP) Electronic ap L.85 for panels 50mm Ref 4457 (see page 4) Mains supply 230/2V (495444RP) 7050 Delabie BB792 valve certified MV3 BC 99/0906 PREMIX ELECRONIC PANEL Anti-bacterial duty flush (230/2V and battery-operated) Automatic duty flush (~ 45 seconds every 24 hours after the last use): avoids water stagnation and the development of bacteria in the pipework.
