23 Stainless steel About Stainless steel Not all sinks are the same Taking care of your sink make it timeless Kitchen sinks have been manufactured in a wide variety of materials, from wood up to the latest composites. Each has its benefints, and the right one for you will depend on your needs. All sinks, no matter which material you select, will eventually show signs of wear and tear, but they should also be able to withstand the rigours of everyday use for a very long time. The most popular material for kitchen sinks today is stainless steel. Note, however, that not all sinks are the same. The first thing to look at is the chrome and nickel ratio. Chrome increases hardness and wear resistance, and provides the with lustre and durability. Nickel increases strength and improves shock resistance. The is non-porous, superbly hygienic, rust-free, heat resistant and extremely durable. Only well-known brands use this premium quality as standard in their production process, giving a lifetime guarantee that your sink will not chip, flake or, of course, crack or break. The chrome-nickel grade is not only important for durability. Some sinks look bright and shiny at first, but soon rust and corrode because the combination of chrome and nickel is not exactly right. Stainless steel Thickness The thickness of the is probably the main point to check when buying a sink. The thicker the steel, the less susceptible it is to denting, bowing, noise, temperature changes and the hard knocks of pots and pans. But this does not mean we can neglect the care of this essential kitchen item. As a rule, s best friend is cold, clean water or a mild detergent solution, applied with a soft sponge, rinsed well and wiped dry. Here are some of the products or elements that can damage your sink: Chlorides Chlorides are found in almost all soaps, detergents and cleaning products and can be damaging to. They are water soluble, however, so if you rinse away residues after each use, a weekly scouring is all that is needed to keep your sink looking bright and shiny. Scratches Like most metallic surfaces, your sink will scratch. Don t worry, these are simply usage marks which will eventually blend into the overall fi nish of the sink. Knives Your sink is designed to serve as many things but not as a chopping board. This type of use will cause deep scratches in its surface, and will also blunt your knives. For an additional work area, choose from our wide range of chopping boards. Water Quality The quality of your water can affect the appearance of your sink. When water has a high iron content, a brown surface stain can form on the sink giving the appearance of rust. Also, in areas with a high concentration of minerals or over-softened water, a white fi lm may develop on the sink. To combat these problems, we suggest you wipe the sink dry after each use and give it a more thorough clean each week using a recommended abrasive product. Foods Foods containing high levels of salt should not be allowed to dry on the sink surface. Rinse your sink thoroughly after use. 22

Use a small amount of a creamy paste of mild household abrasive cleaner on a cloth made wet with detergent solution as per routine cleaning. Rinse and dry Repeat several times rather than resorting to a single aggressive cleaning method. If some stubborn stains persist use a fine synthetic scourer pad instead of a cloth. Rub gently Lime scale deposits from hard water Prolonged soaking in a 25% vinegar solution or a 5% nitric acid solution. Periodically rub with a nylon bristled brush or fine synthetic scourer pad Can usually be prevented by regular routine cleaning. Do not allow excessive build-up before treating Grease, fats and oils- All finishes Wipe off excess with soft cloth or paper towel. Use a water-borne or water-soluble de-greasing agent followed by Routine cleaning Rust marks due to presence of or contact with ferrous materials If heavy, swab with a sponge moistened with a dilute (10-15%) solution of nitric acid (HN03). Follow by Routine Cleaning Avoid any contact of ferrous (iron) containing materials with Stainless Steel. Dilute nitric acid (HN03), in strengths of up to 20%, is a friendly acid to Stainless Steel. It is the ONLY acid which may be used with no risk to Stainless Steel Dark oxide scale from welding or heat tints Pickling and passivating plus thorough water rinsing as outlined previously. Follow by routine Cleaning Slight heat tints may be removed by repeated application as for stubborn stain and discolouration Scratches on polished (lined) finishes Slight scratches - Use a nylon pad loaded with an iron-free abrasive polishing compound. Follow the direction of the original polish lines. Follow with routine cleaning. Deep scratches coarse abrasives should be used initially. Follow as for slight scratches Deep scratches will be difficult to remove completely. Do not use metal scourers or wire wool unless they are made from Stainless Steel It must be appreciated that some of the above suggested procedures will alter the surface appearance of the treated area compared to that of the original surface finish. They should therefore be applied only with due consideration and care Cleaning Procedure Clean the Stainless Steel as often as experience dictates (i.e. when noticeably dull or dirty); and use the simplest cleaning procedure that will effectively do the job. - Stainless Steel's best friends are clean water or mild detergent solution, applied with a soft cloth or sponge, rinsed well and wiped dry. - Routine simple, gentle and inexpensive cleaning will retain both the corrosion resistance and appearance of Stainless Steel through years of exposure and use. Occasionally a small amount of Inox Cream may be used on a soft cloth made wet with the detergent solution to remove stubborn dirt or slight incipient stains.
