1 Basic Digital Snow Melt Control II Applications The Viega Basic Digital Snow Melt Control II provides automatic snow melt system activation with slab high limit.this control senses low air temperature and precipitation to activate the snow-ice melting system. A slab sensor prevents overheating of the slab. Equipped with a timer switch for manual activation. Features Snow melting by demand only Automatic snow melt activation Manual override Senses both temperature and precipitation Simple installation and programming Large digital LCD display Reliable, economical Specifications Digital Setpoint Control II Input: 24VAC Output: 2 sets of SPDT dry contacts, 1/2 120VAC 9.8 FLA, 58.8 LRA Environment: F 5 to 95% rh, non-condensing Power draw: 8 VA 4.91 x 8.16 x 2.37 in. 2 Installation The components of the Basic Digital Snow Melt Control II Snow Detector (17002) Digital Setpoint Control II (17029) Watertight Sensor (17031) Typical Snow Melt Installation (showing additional equipment) The snow detector should be placed in a location where it will not be covered with drifting snow. Install a secure 1/2" rigid conduit to show a clearance above ground level of 2 to 3 feet minimum (depending upon annual snowfall). The snow detector may also be located on an exterior wall with full exposure to snow and ice (no overhang). The snow detector does not have to be located near the snow melting area, but should have full exposure to snow and ice (away from trees, roof overhangs, etc...). For proper control, the sensor for the setpoint control must be located within the snow melting slab, and should be placed midway between rows of tubing. The sensor should be placed in conduit which is cast into the slab, so that replacement is possible. The sensor is extendable up to 100'. Install the timer in a 3 deep electrical wall box with TOP (indicated on front cover) in proper position. Fasten cover to outlet box using two screws provided. Place calibrated wall plate on timer unit and fasten with nut provided. Push knob onto timer shaft. If knob is not centered on 0, either the plate or the timer can be rotated slightly. 3 Wiring Wiring the Basic Digital Snow Melt Control II with a system circulator pump and a boiler circulator pump. Note: Connect wiring to N/O side of Timer. Do NOT connect 120V to Digital Setpoint Control II. 24V power is supplied by Timer or Snow Detector. When connecting the sensor connect both red wires to one terminal and the white wire to the other terminal. Teminals for sensor marked "T". Wiring the Basic Digital Snow Melt Control II with a system circulator pump and the Viega Pump and Boiler Relay (sold separately) to control boiler activation and/or a boiler circulator pump. Note: Connect wiring to N/O side of Timer. Do NOT connect 120V to Digital Setpoint Control II. 24V power is supplied by Timer or Snow Detector. When connecting the sensor connect both red wires to one terminal and the white wire to the other terminal. Terrminals for sensor marked "T". Note: Installation by a licensed electrician is recommended. Installation and use of this equipment should be in accordance with provisions of the U.S. national electric code, applicable local code and pertinent industry standards. 3 of 5
4 Programming Turn the timer knob clockwise past 2 to power up the digital setpoint control. Press "MENU" button on the control to adjust settings: At any point during the programming you may press the "HOME" button to return back to the sensor viewing. 1. Press "MENU", then press the right arrow button when the "Program Screen" appears 2. When the "Relay Screen" appears, press right arrow button to select Relay 1 3. Select Setpoint 1 by pressing the right arrow button Operation The snow melting system will be automatically activated when low temperature and precipitation are detected. The system will then operate until the temperature rises and/or the precipitation stops plus a five hour purge time to ensure melting of all slab areas. During operation, the setpoint control limits the maximum slab temperature at the setpoint (38 F recommended) to ensure melting while preventing the slab from overheating. To turn the snow melting system on manually, turn the knob of the timer clockwise to the desired time period (at least 2 hours). The timer will automatically turn the system off at the end of this time period (unless system has been activated automatically by the snow detector). 4. Use the up and down arrows to adjust the Setpoint 1 to 38 F (this is the maximum slab temperature setting of the snow melt system) 5. Once the setpoint has been adjusted press the right arrow to accept and to display the "Relay 1" menu 6. Select "Diffrntl" by pressing the right arrow button 7. Using the up and down arrows, adjust the differential to 2 F, then press the right arrow button to accept and return to the menu 8. Once you have completed these steps either press the "HOME" key or scroll down using the down arrow to "EXIT" and then press the right arrow button Once all programming is complete the configuration can be locked to prevent any unauthorized changes. To Lock or Unlock the keypad simply press and hold the "MENU" and "HOME" buttons simultaneously for five seconds. Turn the timer back to zero to reset the system to automatic operation. 4 of 5
5 Troubleshooting If the snowmelting system is not operating correctly, first check that all electrical connections have been made properly. Check for power to all components (120V and 24V). If the snow detector does not activate the system during snowfall, turn on the timer switch. If this activates the system, replace the snow detector. If neither the timer or snow detector turns the system on, check the setpoint control configuration. If the configuration is correct disconnect the slab sensor and check its resistance. Replace the sensor if its resistance value does not match the temperature in the accompanying chart to the right. Temp F Temp C Resistance Ohms of 5
