5 9 The Electric Heating & Ventilation Association (TEHVA) produces the DOM 8: Guide to The Design of Electric Space Heating Systems. In this guide TEHVA states: In new, smaller dwellings, as the energy requirement can be very low, direct acting heating alone is often used very effectively. Direct acting systems invariably use less energy than storage based systems and consequently produce lower carbon emissions. Even though direct acting heating does not use storage, it is usual for an off peak tariff to be used in the home; primarily for the hot water. It has been found that around 35% of the energy used in a direct acting heating system is generally used on the off-peak rate by householders. TEHVA further states in the guide the advantage of panel heaters is that they are arguably the cheapest and most simple system to install. They are light, easy to position, and like the majority of electric systems, need little or no maintenance. They are available in a wide range of capacities, being able to match the room heating requirements very accurately. Their responsiveness to control means that even if the size of the heater has been overestimated, there will be no penalties in terms of efficiency. Each receiver has a unique code that directs signals to transmit precisely to the relevant electrical appliance. 8 15 Project Overview Joanne and Stephen are undertaking an extension to their house in Hertfordshire which will include a ground floor conservatory and a loft conversion. They already use electric under floor heating in the kitchen and family bathroom and gas central heating throughout the house. The loft conversion will feature a bedroom and a storage room as well as a separate bathroom. These rooms in the loft will only be used on occasion perhaps for guests and the bathroom will need some form of heating. The couple were looking for a control system which would control new electric panel heaters in the loft rooms as well as the existing under floor heating in the bathroom and kitchen. 13 25 Project Overview Martin took on the challenge of a self-build project and after more than two years of research chose a Scandinavian Log House to build on the plot of land he purchased in Powys, North Wales. He undertook the vast majority of the project on his own whilst living on site over a twelve month period. CASE STUDY The Log House occupies over 1800 square feet on two floors incorporating fantastic balconies with views across fields and a canal. One of the prime goals was to create an energy efficient home and to take advantage of the outstanding insulation properties of the Log House. Another primary goal was to have an integrated control system that would not only control the heating, but also the solar system for the hot water, the full house heat recovery ventilation system, security lighting and even the filter system for his fish pond. Scandinavian Log House self build The Solution When he took on his self build project Martin wanted a system that could accurately and efficiently control his heating and hot water needs as well as ventilation and other functions in the house. He has therefore programmed the system so that it heats up during the electricity supply economy tariff, making sure that the heating for the hot water operates at peak efficiency. CASE STUDY and limited control flexibility the electric heating option combined with solar panels to heat his water quickly became his favoured choice. Series 8 Heaters A number of Series 8 panel heaters were chosen from the extensive range available from NOBO Heating. The decision was made based on both the SAP calculations and Part L of the building regulations, which his building consultant had provided, as well as aesthetics taking into account where he wanted the heaters to be positioned in the home. Solar Power Water Heating Martin was determined to introduce some renewable energy supply into the building in order to complete the energy efficiency operation and so he installed solar panels to the roof which generate heat for the hot water system coupled with an electric immersion heater when needed.

18 35 Project Overview Paul and Norma Gibson bought a piece of land in picturesque Cliffe in the North Yorkshire countryside around two years ago with a plan to build a retirement bungalow. Work finally began in February 2007 and they hope to complete the building of Buffers (so called because it stands very close to the end of a railway line!) by the end of November. They decided on a dorma bungalow style property as there is a distinct lack of this type of property in their area. They are also aware that as this is going to be a retirement property, there will at some point be a need for a property that is easily accessible which will allow for full mobility in the future. The Solution Paul and Norma chose a heating solution from NOBO Heating for a number of reasons; Paul says we really wanted a heating system that was set and forget, something very quiet with little or even no maintenance required.
