The GardenHouse serves as a demonstration site and hub for year-round garden education. Neighbors volunteer to grow food, flowers, and community; and youth develop job and life skills in service to the neighborhood. For six years, the Hunter Park GardenHouse has empowered neighbors to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food to better their health and become more connected with the community. We are open 6 days a week, and offer a wide assortment of programs. Thanks for checking out our 2014 Catalog! 3 Gardening Supplies Raised Garden Bed Kits Gardening made easy! A planting box is just the thing for summer veggies, herbs, and flowers! Raised garden beds solve the issue of amending the soil to make it acceptable for gardening. They lengthen the growing season, help the soil retain nutrients, and reduce the risk of pests and weeds. Kits include untreated white pine, hardware, and instructions. A hand screwdriver is the only tool needed for assembly. Call for pricing on custom sizes. Kits are available for pick-up only. 5 GardenHouse Produce Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Get your fill of fresh veggies. We grow and sell produce through a Multi-Season CSA, providing access to affordable, sustainably-grown veggies, nearly year-round. We offer work-shares and accept EBT for payment. Members sign up at the beginning of a season, and commit to purchasing produce for the full season. It is a great way to meet other community members, talk about food, try new recipes, eat healthy, and sharpen gardening skills. Membership in the CSA is offered at the beginning of each season, through an application process. More details can be found at: Spring Greens CSA (6 weeks, March-April) $60 for season. Payment via Lump sum or Weekly SNAP/EBT payments. Produce includes: salad mix and cooking greens (Swiss chard, kale, collards). Summer CSA (14 weeks, June-August) $280 (All Pay), $140 (1/2 pay & 1/2 work), or Work only (16 work hours per month) for season. Payment via Lump sum, Monthly, or Weekly SNAP/EBT payments. Produce includes: salad mix, head lettuce, cooking greens (Swiss chard, kale, collards), carrots, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, beets, cucumbers, summer squash, radish, pole beans, basil, turnips, scallions, onions, potatoes, herbs, and flowers. Wholesale & Direct produce & flower sales are available through the Allen Market Place Exchange or by contacting us: Gardening Services Visiting Gardener Bring GardenHouse expertise to your yard. Schedule a yard call with our Gardening Educator, who helps Eastside neighbors tackle various gardening issues. Educational Courses Urban Gardener Certification Program This program, intended for beginner to intermediate gardeners, features 10 sessions of instruction in basic yard and greenhouse gardening skills. Participants will have handson instruction as we plant and care for a garden together over the length of the program. Registrants attend Saturday workshops with special guest lecturers, and additional Tuesday evening labs offering hands-on practice with GardenHouse staff. Participants receive a certificate at the end of the course. Permaculture Design Certificate Course August & August Learn how to harness the patterns and power of nature to live a sustainable lifestyle. This two week intensive course is an internationally recognized 72-hour course developed to empower you with the tools of Permaculture Design. Course led by Dani Slabaugh of Yard to Table Gardens. 8 GardenHouse Youth Planting seeds for the future. Our free after-school and summer youth programs teach youth valuable gardening, nutrition, physical fitness, leadership, teamwork, and various other job and life skills. Youth Projects Take Root Garden Club, for youth ages 5-10, focuses on food, gardening, nutrition, and physical fitness. Youth participate in educational games and activities, tend their own veggie garden, and make healthy snack recipes. Permissions slips available at: During School Year: Tuesday & Thursday, 4:00pm-5:00pm at Foster Community Center During Summer: Tuesday & Thursday, 10:30am-12:00pm at GardenHouse Garden-in-a-Box project provides a small-scale introduction to yard gardening for residents with limited income, gardening ability, and/or mobility while enabling youth to develop skills in horticulture, simple carpentry, and communication with diverse residents. Edible Park project encourages park visitors to help themselves to fresh produce from fruiting trees and bushes, and perennial herbs from designated spaces in Hunter Park, that youth plant and nurture. Youth Service Corps, for youth ages 11-17, is a job and life skills training program focusing on food availability projects. Current projects include: Garden-in-a-Box, Edible Park, Park Cart, and Fruit Tree Project. School year enrollment is limited to 20 youth, and Summer enrollment is limited to 30 youth. Park Cart Open Hours: June-August, Monday 2:30-4pm & Tuesday-Friday 1-4pm Fruit Tree Project teaches youth valuable horticulture skills as they map neighborhood fruit trees, plant fruit trees throughout the neighborhood, and redistribute fruit to neighbors, food pantry recipients, youth, and volunteers. 9 Get Involved Our programs rely on help from volunteers. In addition to daily volunteer shifts, we also have periodic events that require volunteer help. It is a great opportunity to meet others, partake in hands-on garden and nutrition education, and give back to the community.
