Fortunately or unfortunately, here in our lovely state, specifically Marin county, our winter is not snow, or ice but rather tons of rain. Normally, the rain starts in November and ends in March. So, compared to the rest of the country, our winter is mellow. Simply put, winterizing our garden is not a complicated or mysterious task as long as you keep in mind that our plants do need some period of rest or dormancy. It is more an activity of wrapping up the cycle of plant growth as we approach fall. Doing so equips them to get the energy to bloom come spring. The basic rule is good sanitation. So clean, clean, clean then mulch, mulch, mulch. Here are some general pointers to keep in mind: * Get rid of all deceased and damaged plants. All obvious dead branches, canes, trunks should be put on the compost unless deceased, then they should go in the garbage. * Remove all yellow and dead foliage and flowers. * Pick up fallen fruits on the ground and those still hanging on the tree. * Perennials that have stopped blooming should be cut back as low as possible. * Divide crowded bulbs and tubers like daylilies, dahlia, and some iris. * Annuals of course should be removed as soon as the bloom is gone and leaves have turned yellow. As you know, fungus and bacteria overwinters on the leaves, under the bark, stems, roots and on old flowers and fruits, so dead heading is key. For roses same rules apply. Personally, I wait until the week between Christmas and New Years to strip ALL leaves from my roses. This way, you can get a good view of how you would want to prune them. Next, mulch, mulch, mulch. The Marin Rose November/December 2016

What exactly is mulching? Quite simply, mulch is a layer of opaque material over the soil surface. It may be inorganic or synthetic such as polyethylene black plastic or organic such as ground bark, stray, hay, rice hulls or compost. Just be sure the mulch is not placed on the stem or trunk of plants, as this could cause disease. Mulching conserves soil moisture, thus reduces water consumption. It controls weed growth as it blocks the sunlight necessary to germinate some weed seeds. It reduces soil erosion, and improves overall garden appearance. Finally, be sure to check your irrigation system. Change to a less frequent cycle or perhaps turn it off completely should we get some rain. Let s hope so! Lydia Truce 2016 NCNH District Conference September 30 - October 2 Rose and Photography Shows - Roses of the Golden West Many of us from the Marin Rose Society attended the conference at the Hilton in Burlingame. Here is a review of the events. Friday after registering, the first lecture was the Consulting Rosarian Seminar by Dr. Joel Ross on, "Chemical Safety". All CR's must keep current on application of chemicals on our roses. Sensible Integrated Pest Management practices are essential and being aware of the least toxic ones, if possible. Many organics and oils are now available. Good advice: to improve the soil and select disease resistant plants. If you choose to use pesticides, use the least toxic, on a calm day, then water well before and after spraying, wear protective clothing and shower afterwards. Most of us refrain from using chemicals but we must know of the dangers. Follow the warnings on the packaging: Slight, Moderate, High and Toxic. Identify your disease and treat it correctly and safely. The Marin Rose Society helped on various committees: Registration, Program Editing, Rose and Photo shows. Friday evening was the wine and cheese welcoming and a lively rose plant auction. Saturday, while the judging of roses, arrangements and photos was taking place, the first speaker started. Debra Bagley of Plano Texas was a very funny and informative speaker telling us of the challenges of growing roses in the extreme weather of Texas. She spoke of the Rose Rosette disease there and how they are trying to combat it. She is a CR, Judge, and recently became an evaluator of the David Austin Roses for the city of Farmers Branch, Texas. The Marin Rose 2 November/December 2016

Baldo Villegas, "The Bug Man", was the next speaker. His charm and experience is well known to most of us. His topic was, "Beneficial Insects and the Plants that Attract Them". We saw many pictures from his large garden in Orangevale (more than 2,000 roses!) showing bugs (predators and parasites) and plants attractive to natural enemies that he watches with a close eye. After lunch, the speaker was Burling Leong, "Propagating Roses at the Burlington Rose Nursery". She worked at the Sequoia Nursery for 35 years as a manager. She was involved in the restoration of the rose garden at Hearst castle and the Will Rogers State Park, and now does custom propagation of Ramblers for the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in New York. Our last speaker was Bob Martin, our current VP of ARS. His topic was, "The Newest in Polyanthas". Bob has a great sense of humor besides being a prolific writer of more than 600 published articles on roses and is an active rose exhibitor. I have heard him speak many times to much enjoyment. Saturday evening closed with the Banquet and Awards. All awards are noted on the NCNH website (ncnhdistrict.org). Our Gail Trimble, Betty Mott, Joan Goff and Cher Frechette won many awards. Dr. James Sproul, the keynote speaker, gave a very interesting talk on minis, minifloras, and the future of roses. The highlight of the Sunday morning breakfast meeting and raffle was the beautiful presentation by Steve Jones, Past President of ARS, and immediate Past President of the World Federation of Rose Societies, showing fabulous rose gardens in his world travels to distant lands. It takes many participants to put on a Conference: fund raising, CRs, judges, clerks, program speakers, raffle preparation, etc., etc. Let's all help and volunteer to assist in the next one! We have a wealth of talent in our NCNH District and it is great fun to attend a conference and reconnect with old friends and meet new ones all through the Love of The Rose. Lenore Ruckman Baldo Villegas charming us with amazing close-up photos of insects and plants from his huge rose garden. Debra Bagley in her Texas boots telling us of the almost impossible task of rose growing in hot, dry Texas. The Marin Rose 3 November/December 2016

President s Message Greetings Rose Lovers, This is the time of year that seems to speed up somehow and it's hard to keep up with all that is going on. Hopefully, many of you will attend our Harvest Dinner at San Rafael Joe's in San Rafael on Thursday, November 10th at 6:00 PM. Mark it on your calendar and send a check to Connie Pelissero who is in charge of this event. Lydia Truce is adding her name to those that are generously donating wine. We think it is going to be a wonderful time to celebrate the end of our fabulous rose year and begin preparation for the new year ahead. Joan Goff, our District Director, will install our new board members. Florence Taylor will be presenting the Bronze Medal for outstanding service. The food will be delicious and the company comforting and enjoyable. We have so much to be grateful for living where we do and having what we have. In 2017 our society will no longer hold it's meetings in the Livermore Room at MAGC. We will be meeting in what used to be the artist's studio to the right of the main parking lot. We will have our own level parking lot that will make it so much easier to attend meetings. The studio is quite large and has been recently remodeled. The floors are lovely and the walls freshly painted white. There is some expensive audio/visual equipment that has been installed and we will have a house manager to operate it plus open and close the building. The consensus of opinion is that we will be pleased and happy with the change. We will be saving $650 a year in rent which certainly is a blessing. This year, more then ever, we need your help with our pruning season from New Year's to Valentine Day. We have many private and public gardens to prune and each year we have less members able to The Marin Rose 5 November/December 2016

help. The money we make is important because hopefully it pays for our rent at MAGC and our storage fees. Marin is an expensive place for a non-profit organization. A donation to the Marin Rose Society is tax deductible and we are grateful for any donations we receive. Winter pruning with a group of our members seems to establish deep bonds. You will be surprised at how good it feels to be outdoors, getting exercise and being in some lovely gardens no matter what the weather holds. We need your help even if it's help in cleaning up and giving moral support. Check your tools. Clean and sharpen them. Make sure you have a rain jacket and boots of some kind. We can take you on a winter adventure you won't believe! Hope to see you at the Harvest Dinner. Please bring your check books to renew your membership. We have much to look forward to in 2017 and we don't want you to miss any part of it. 8 PROGRAM NOTES Bee Careful! Gardeners Beware, Bee-Toxic Pesticides Found in Bee Friendly Plants sold at Garden Centers across the U.S., was the name of a handout that Susan Kegley gave us after her very enlightening talk. Susan with her scientific background has started a farm with her husband and was especially concerned about the bee population in her gardens. She made us aware of recent studies on bee populations. Bees provide one out of three bites of food we eat! They contribute almost $20 billion to the economy in the U.S. and as much as $577 billion in global annual food production. They are affected by parasites, diseases, loss of forage and habitat and changing climate. Especially important is the water-soluble pesticides absorbed by plant roots which is transferred up the plant to its leaves and flowers. Neonicotinoid pesticides studies in 2014 showed that ornamental plants sold in nurseries and garden stores were treated with this pesticide and consumers were not warned that these plants could be toxic to bees. Susan Kegley on Bees In reaction to this, in the past two years, 65 garden retailers and nurseries and landscaping companies, including the largest Home Depot and Lowe s have eliminated neonics. This group included Whole Foods and BJ s Wholesale Club. Flowering trees are a major source for bee populations. City and county governments, businesses and landscapers planning new tree plantings need to be made aware of this bee hazard. What can we do? Read labels and ask retailers if their products include pre-treated insecticides. This includes seeds. Purchase organic soil, plants and vegetables. Throw away systemic insecticides. Join the Friends of the Earth Bee Action campaign at We thank Pam Scott for her planning good programs this past year. We will welcome Andy Smith in 2017 as our new program chair. He has pinned down several speakers already and we are looking forward to their advice on maintaining our gardens. Rozell Overmire The Marin Rose 8 November/December 2016

In Tribute to Betty Mott One of our most active members, Betty, has organized the photo shows for the past three years at our Marin Rose Shows. We all have enjoyed entering photos of our beautiful roses to share their lovely form and color with our members and the public. At the District conference Betty brought together photos from the Northern California rose societies to be judged. There were 188 entries! One of the residents of the Tamalpais in Marin, Rosemary Greenberg, won first prize in her class. (See below). Betty made the Tamalpais residents aware of the show by bringing it to them in their auditorium last year. October show judged by our own Betty Mott. We thank you Betty for your energy and organization skills, judging and for this past year s articles on rose classes. Rozell Ovemire The Marin Rose 10 November/December 2016
