2 Minutes June 11, 2009 P age 2 Our regular Thursday night meeting was held at the home of LouAnn and Larry Jayne of Marion. Guest speaker was John Denny of the Eastern Iowa Bonsai Society. He gave a great talk about the art of Bonsai and had several of his very nice specimens on hand for us to look at. We began with the 50/50 drawing, in which Dave Bell was the winner of. The drawing brought in $8.50 for both him and the club. LouAnn spoke to the club briefly about her pond and its history. The club wants to thank The Pond Depot for the nice samples of products it supplies. Many members took home some nice little packets. Minutes were approved as written. In old business: Jeff Gardner gave a report on the past Wine Tasting event recently held at his home. He presented the club with a check for $700.00! Perhaps a new annual event, next year they plan to add beer to the event for the non-wine tasting people. Maria Hamilton with the Cookbook committee, reported the cookbooks were done and at the meeting for pick up. Have you seen these? They re great! Make sure you buy one or two or more! I reported on the progress of the pond tour. Again we will need more volunteers to help manage the ponds. All shifts have openings and even if you can only work a half day, it would be greatly appreciated. Please call me or Monica In new business: Jeff Gardner briefed members that again they will be putting together a Progressive dinner. The date has not been set. The dinner and dessert homes have been spoken for, but they still need someone willing to do the appetizer leg of the mini tour. Door prizes were drawn for and the meeting was adjourned. LouAnn and Larry had a very delicious assortment of yummy things to eat and drink. Thank you very much for hosting a delightful meeting. Respectfully submitted, Jackie Allsup Minutes Saturday, June 27, 2009 Instead of the usual meeting, this was the date of the club s pre-tour. The Pre-tour gives the pond owners and volunteers a chance to see the other ponds on the tour. Maps are handed out for members to try out and make corrections to before they go to final print. After a few announcements, everyone car pooled around to all the ponds. We finally arrived at the last pond shortly after 9:00. All the ponds looked great, and I think everyone enjoyed the sneak preview. Respectfully submitted, Jackie Allsup

9 TENTATIVE 2009 Meeting Schedule Times determined by the Host/Hostess Programs will be updated as available along with the times of the meetings. August 13th, Thursday August 29nd, Saturday September 10th, Thursday September 26th, Saturday October 24th, Saturday November Cecy & Bob Bisenius Deb Walser Outdoor Lighting Jackie & Harry Allsup Lavonne & Dick Isard Pat & Wayne Beuter Jamie Beyer OPEN Recognition Night Contact Monica or if you would like to host in October Eastern Iowa Pond Society Membership Application available on eips.org Open House at the Garden of Zora and Paul Ronan 5031 North Marion Road, Central City, IA Phone: July 25th & 26th 10:00 am to 4:00 pm The garden of Zora and Paul Ronan is located in rural Linn County. The garden covers approximately 1 acre surrounding the house. The remaining 32 acres uses no-till cultivation and wild-life habitat to conserve the soil and prevent erosion. The gardens are combinations of trees and shrubs, perennials and annuals, which are colorful in every season beginning with spring bulbs and ending with fall-blooming asters. Those are the background for my passion, daylilies. Mid-summer is the peak bloom season. Over 400 cultivars, most registered in the last 20 years, provide a display from late June to frost. More than 260 cultivars have been registered in the last 10 years with 87 registered in the last 5 years. Directions: From I-380: Exit at Toddville. Travel east on County Home Road to Alburnett Road. Turn north on Alburnett Road. Turn east on Justins Road (gravel). Justins Road dead ends at North Marion. Turn north and the garden is on the right. From Highway 13: Travel north on Highway 13 to Central City. Turn west on E-16 (Center Point-Central City Road). Turn north on North Marion Road (gravel) and travel 1.6 miles. Garden is on the right. From Marion: Travel north on North Tenth Street. Tenth Street changes name to North Marion and becomes gravel when it crosses County Home Road. Since North Marion is gravel for quite a long way, it is better to travel north on either North Alburnett Road or Highway 13
