1 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION NEWS YOU CAN USE For Montgomery County Master Gardener Volunteers October 2018 We are Ohio State University Extension trained volunteers empowered to educate others with timely research-based gardening information. With the holidays just around the corner, it s time for unexpected guests to appear in your house. I m not talking about human guests. I m referring to the 6- and 8-legged type. They don t bring a hostess gift or call to let you know they are stopping by, they just crawl right in and make themselves at home for the winter! First, let s take a look at the visitors. The most common invaders are Brown Marmorated Stink Bug and Asian Lady Beetle. They seem to appear magically inside the house during the fall. Unfortunately for me, the entry to the front door is white siding on the outside. With the sun shining on it, it is a magnet for both stink bugs and lady beetles. They congregate in mass and wait for the door to open. The sheer numbers of them guarantee some will slip into the house. If efforts at the front door are in vain, the garage door, white and facing the same direction as the front door, is a sure bet for the free-loaders to get the proverbial foot in the door! So, now we have established that light colors in the sun attract our guests, what other points of entry do they look for? Check outside your house for foundation cracks, holes and other spaces insects can easily access, also places where a pipe, conduit, telephone or cable TV wire goes through the siding. Check attic windows and make sure the weather seal on basement windows is tight. Sealing cracks around electrical outlet boxes, switches and light fixtures, and around window and baseboard molding on the inside walls will help keep the bugs trapped within the walls. In older homes with double-hung windows equipped with pulleys, insects commonly enter living areas through the pulley opening. Masking tape applied over the opening will keep insects from entering through this route. Even though they are inside, rest assured that they're not nesting, laying eggs or feeding on anything or anyone in your house. You could just leave them alone and hope they find their way out of your house in the spring and that no one stirs up a stinky ruckus with them in the meantime. ~ Kim

(Election of Executive Officers) Janet Hickey also presented her Busy Bee award to Jan Davis with this sentiment: As everyone knows, the Association depends on our dedicated fellow master gardeners. There is one among us who year-after-year has put her heart and soul into every activity she does. She has been a behind the scenes leader since she certified in For years, she has been a fully-invested member of the Program Committee helping to bring advanced training to our master gardeners. She has given hours and hours of volunteer time to the Washington Township project during spring planting, summer monitoring, and fall cleanup. And, since we all love to party, she has been instrumental in organizing our festive November Banquet over the years. I m honored to give the Quarterly Membership Busy Bee pin to Jan Davis. You make a difference and we thank you for all you do. Jan, congratulations and wear it with pride!! Janet Hickey, GMCMGA President September 18, 2018 The business meeting counts as volunteer time (plus travel) recorded in VMS: Description - quarterly general membership meeting; Project Administration; 1.25 hr. volunteer. Kim Hupman and Sue Howorth presented the Continuing Education portion of the evening. They introduced some of the newly updated volunteer project descriptions listed as approved project sites on the VMS. They also reviewed with us the recertification process, which will be required after the first of the year. Required to recertify: 10 hours Continuing Education and 20 hours of Volunteer Service. An important reminder: Please enter your hours into the VMS. If you have questions or problems, contact Kim Hupman. Continuing Education portion recorded in VMS under Continuing Education Description, VMS update CE hours (no travel) Hello Fellow Master Gardeners If you had a chance to drive through Washington Township over the summer, you no doubt enjoyed the colorful and luscious beds along the streets and medians just as I did. We have our fellow Master Gardeners who helped plant the beds in early spring and those who monitored these beds over the hot and rainy summer days to thank. It is through their participation and dedication that we receive monies from this annual fundraiser to support the education programs offered to our members throughout the year. Please join us as we start the autumn cleanup of the Washington Township beds on Monday, October 15, at 9 a.m., Washington Township Government Center, 8100 McEwen Road. We will continue cleanup that week until finished. If you can help during cleanup week, please contact Jan Burke-Brown at (937) or jan-carl@ameritech.net before October 12. If you want to clean out the bed you are monitoring before the cleanup week, PLEASE BAG AND REMOVE DEBRIS FROM THE AREA. If you are looking to complete your requirements before the end of the year, here is an opportunity to do so. Please remember these volunteer service hours plus travel time count toward recertification under the Washington Township project in the VMS. Thanks for your assistance, Janet Hickey News You Can Use October Montgomery Co. Master Gardener Volunteer Program

5 Out in the Community The Montgomery County Master Gardeners were invited to participate at the HoneyFest event held at Delco Park in Kettering, Ohio on Saturday, September 15, The MGV booth was located near a native plant, pollinator-friendly garden, which was instrumental when discussing with visitors the importance of establishing pollinator gardens. There was also a craft area for the children. Photos courtesy of Gail Carone Approximately 40 people visited the booth during the event. Viewing photos from cell phones, the Master Gardeners fielded questions, such as: What is the name of this plant? What should I do to establish a drought-tolerant garden? What plants should I cut down before winter? Additional topics of interest discussed were plant division, the importance of compost material incorporated into the garden, and pollinator-friendly management practices dealing with insect and weed control to protect our pollinators. 6 What is the Name of that Perennial? Tricyrtis hirta Common Name: Japanese toad lily Type: Herbaceous perennial Family: Liliaceae Native Range: Japan Zone: 4 to 8 Height: 2.00 to 3.00 feet Spread: 1.50 to 2.00 feet Bloom Time: August to September Bloom Description: White to pale lilac with heavy purple spotting Sun: Part shade to full shade Water: Medium to wet Maintenance: Low Suggested Use: Naturalize Flower: Showy Culture: Easily grown in average, medium to wet, welldrained soils in part to full shade. Prefers moist, organically rich, humusy, slightly acidic soils in part shade. Soil must not be allowed to dry out. Non-rhizomatous. May self-seed in optimum growing conditions. Noteworthy Characteristics: Tricyrtis hirta, commonly called toad lily, is perhaps best known for its unique flowers, ability to bloom in shade and late summer to early fall bloom time. Features small, lily-like flowers (1 inch long) with six showy tepals (similar appearing sepals and petals). Flowers appear in the upper leaf axils and stem ends either solitary or more often in small clusters (cymes) of 2-3 flowers each. White to pale lilac flowers with heavy purple spotting. Arching, unbranched stems grow upright to 2-3' tall. Sometimes called hairy toad lily because all parts of the plant are hairy. This species of toad lily is not rhizomatous. Oval to oblong leaves (3-6" long) with parallel veins and clasping leaf bases. Genus name comes from the Greek words tri- meaning three and kyrtos meaning humped as the bases of the three outer petals are swollen and sacklike. Specific epithet means hairy. Problems: No serious insect or disease problems. Slugs are an occasional pest. Garden Uses: Borders, woodland gardens, shade gardens or naturalized areas. Plant in areas where they can be easily observed at close range, because the beauty and detail of the small flowers becomes lost at a distance Resource - This is one of my favorite fall blooming perennials and relatively easy to grow if placed in the right location. The biggest problem I notice the deer LOVE to munch on the tender buds! I often catch them in the act! ~ Gail Carone News You Can Use October Montgomery Co. Master Gardener Volunteer Program
