Cover Photo: Plant Sale 75 years! Tyler Arboretum has been a public garden/ Arboretum for three quarters of a century! A milestone such as this one begs a moment of reflection. In 1944, the year Tyler was founded: Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected to his 4th term Gas was 15 cents per gallon; a loaf of bread was 10 cents, and a new house cost approximately $3,500 WWII was well underway with D-Day occurring on June 6 The Office of Strategic Forces was formed and later named the CIA Bing Crosby topped the charts with four separate songs: I Love You; I ll Be Seeing You; Swinging on a Star, and Don t Fence Me In Today in 2019, we find ourselves with a global economy, the ability to clone life, smart phone capabilities, self-driving vehicles, and medical solutions that use transplants and that allow complex fabricated medicines and laser-based surgery. While technological and social changes can be interesting to reflect upon, nature may be even more interesting. At Tyler we have seen trees grow and die, plants take root and flourish despite the threats of invasive species, animals and flora evolve and adapt to changing climate and environmental demands, and humans experience all that is nature in new and exciting ways. 75 years ago we did not have a fence that protects approximately 100 of our 650 acres from the destructive deer population. 75 years ago we did not have the beautiful Scenic Loop that enables human-nature connection. 75 years ago we did not have treehouses that bring daily joy to children of all ages (and some adults!). 75 years ago we did not have summer camps that enable our community s youth to experience the outdoors in such a fun yet educational format is an exciting year at Tyler! We intend to reflect on our 75th anniversary throughout the year and remain inspired by nature. In the coming month the annual Pancake Breakfast (2/23) is a MUST attend as we will have more than an exciting and hearty atmosphere we will reveal the 75 great nature reads as determined by you, our community! Be sure to come out and enjoy this year s unique event! May will bring the opening of our Gateways to Nature exhibit. This art-based exhibit will present works from 10+ artists that integrate into the natural landscape throughout the Arboretum. The exhibit will run from mid-may through Labor Day with a Members Preview on May 10. During the Spring, we anticipate the opening of our Edible Garden schoolhouse and the beginning of planting in the garden. In our next issue of Topics be on the lookout for exciting programming and event announcements regarding the Edible Garden complex. Our evolution at Tyler will include new leadership in the form of an Executive Director during The search committee appointed by the Board of Trustees is well on their way in the process of finding a new leader. Tyler s history is a proud one, dating back to 1681 when William Penn sold the land to Thomas Minshall. These last 75 years have brought tremendous growth. We hope to learn from these 75 and make the next 75 even more fulfilling! Summer Camp Registration is Open! Camps for rising 1st 12th graders To register visit: tylerarboretum.org/camp New for 2019! 4 Friday, May 3 Members Preview 11am 7pm Plant Experts available all day Garden Design consultations from 11am 6:30pm Remarkable Rhododendrons & Their Cool Companions In this, Tyler s 75th anniversary year, the 2019 Plant Sale features our rhododendrons. Join us and shop a wide variety of rhododendrons, including several of the varieties from our collections, as well as complementary varieties of azaleas and other companion plants. As always, a large selection of plants will suit all pockets and tastes: from trees, shrubs and perennials, to annuals, herbs, and vegetables. With a range of remarkable rhododendrons and companion plants comes a stunning array of delightful seasonal foliage, fantastic flower colors, and alluring aromas. Thanks to literally thousands of varieties of both rhododendrons and azaleas, there s a variety for most garden types and soil conditions, just as long as they re planted in zones 5 8. Did you know that certain varieties of rhododendron can grow up to 25 feet in height, while smaller, less vigorous varieties of up to 24 inches give just as good a seasonal show? Preferring gentle shade and acidic, well-drained, humus-rich soils, most shallow-rooted rhododendrons and azaleas will benefit from good mulching and moist soils if they re to avoid seasonal drought. When you re shopping for rhododendrons and azaleas, choose the healthiest plants you can find, which means avoiding plants with wilting, yellowing foliage, and being particularly mindful of when they flower. Rhododendrons and azaleas thrive best when well watered and when planted anywhere from 24 inches to 6 feet apart depending on the sizes they ll grow to at maturity. If you re shopping Tyler s Plant Sale for specific rhododendron or azalea varieties, be sure to ask one of our Plant Experts for advice about the best kind of plants for your garden. 13 MEET LEARN ENJOY HELP Lend-A-Hand We are looking for new volunteers to join us this spring. From pruning shrubs to creating natural works of art Tyler Volunteers play an active role in all Arboretum operations. Are you wondering how you can join in the fun this spring? Contact Julia Lo Ehrhardt at , ext. 305 or via at Since my retirement, you all have become my second family. We volunteers work and play for Tyler, but the real gift is how much Tyler and all of you offer and give back to us. Diane Collings, volunteer in Horticulture Crew, Clerical, Special Events, and Rookie of the Year Award 2017 recipient Whether you just retired and are looking to experience life on your own schedule, or whether you simply want to put your love of nature into action, volunteering at Tyler is a great plan. Tyler volunteers work side-by-side with staff in many day-to-day tasks, all the while enjoying friendships, learning new skills, and for some, even leading the way. Here are a few volunteer groups you may want to join this year. From setting up the Plant Sale and the Butterfly House to maintaining the parking lot planting and assisting staff in removing damaged trees, this group of stalwart volunteers is the backbone of the Horticulture department. On average, the Horticulture Crew contributes over 28% of our annual volunteer hours. Even though we have many jobs in other departments programs, development, and special events our core task is the care and maintenance of our grounds. It takes a special mindset to help with this work and Tyler Gardener Mallory Smyth describes it perfectly: Tom (volunteer) consistently does whatever work is required without hesitation or complaint, no matter the weather. Even if the task isn t one he especially enjoys, he still pitches in until the job is done. You might be interested to learn that the Horticulture Crew includes some of our longest-serving volunteers. If you are interested in joining the Horticulture Crew you ll need to be available on Tuesdays or Wednesdays between 8am and noon, with availability throughout the year. While plant knowledge is not required, we ask that you enjoy working outdoors and that you re able to lift 30lb on a regular basis. Horticulture Crew Open House: Join us on the first day of spring, March 20 from 10am to noon to learn about this volunteer team and what they do. You will be working with the team. Ask questions and find out firsthand why this is Tyler s hardest working team. How do we combat invasive plants? Is announcing our intentions on social media or debating with our friends good enough? The Natural Areas Restoration (NAR) volunteers know more than most just what havoc invasive species wreak in our 550 acre woods and meadows. They also know how to put the hurt on these marauders. Team work, knowledge, and muscles are employed here. NAR volunteers meet monthly on a Saturday morning between 9:30 and 12:30. Training starts in April. To learn more about this group, come to our NAR Meet and Greet on Saturday, March 16, 10am to noon. Ask questions and learn why this is Tyler s most focused group. One of the newer groups formed in the last two years is the Docent Ambassador volunteers. Providing information about Tyler and leading guided tours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays between April and October; this group is about transforming knowledge into action. On a weekly basis, Docent Ambassadors help visitors find something new to fall in love with. This past year, Docent Ambassadors supported our outreach program to a local retirement home and contributed to the volunteer newsletter with well-researched articles. Our Docent Ambassadors are learners who love working with people. A note from one of the Docent Ambassadors, This program is excellent. The training sessions were very informative, and it s great to help Tyler visitors get so much more out of their visit! If you are interested in joining the Docent Ambassador team, come to our Meet and Greet on Saturday, March 23, 10am to noon. Ask questions and find out firsthand why this is Tyler s most informed group. Like to work outdoors and learn how to grow vegetables? We are forming a new volunteer group to help our staff maintain the new Edible Garden. We are in the midst of putting together crop lists and displays as well as schedules. Details to come. Stay tuned. Have we whetted your appetite for volunteering? Are you curious and want to learn more? Join us at our Volunteer Annual General Meeting (AGM), Thursday, February 14, 10am to noon in the Barn Loft to discover what is planned for From our exhibitions to our new partnerships, our senior staff will share their plans and answer your questions. Hurry, this is a popular meeting and space is limited. To reserve your spot at the Volunteer AGM, or learn more about any of our volunteer Open Houses and Meet and Greet sessions, call Julia Lo Ehrhardt at , ext. 305 or her at jlo@tylerarboretum.org to hold your spot. Bring a friend. 13

15 You Made It Happen Your Generous Annual Fund Gifts Created Huge Impact! n Storm Damage Recovery: Last spring you came to the rescue to help us recover from brutal winter storms and significant damage to our trees, shrubs, and trails. Your gifts supported staff and volunteers working to clear downed trees and branches and to repair fences. Your gifts also supported assessments and care plans for the Weeping Hemlock, the Blue Atlas Cedar, and the Winston Churchill lilac to preserve them for visitors to enjoy. n Fully Funded Summer Internship for 2019: In the summer, you came through to fully fund our 2019 summer horticulture intern. In 2018, Maribeth Beatty spent her time working side by side with Tyler Horticulture staff caring for gardens, trails, and natural lands. Thanks to you, a young person just starting out as a professional in an environmental field will begin Tyler s 10-week paid internship in June. n Bringing the Edible Garden to Life: And finally at year-end, you rallied together to ensure that the Edible Garden will come to life, with plants and classes, to teach children where their food comes from. Through this teaching garden, you will inspire visitors to try eating healthier and food gardening at home. All together, you gave $224,262 in 2018 to support Tyler s gardens, natural lands, and classes to teach children of all ages. We couldn t have done it without you, thank you! 16 INDICIA 515 Painter Road Media, PA Celebrating Our 75th Year! Much has changed since the respective bequests of John J. Tyler and Laura Hoopes Tyler deeded the public garden we know as Tyler Arboretum. The homestead has evolved into a welldeveloped, much-loved public garden that showcases the diversity of plants and the ecosystems that support them. All this has happened thanks to the efforts and vision of Tyler s many supporters and champions, notably Tyler s previous directors, including: Dr. John Caspar Wister, Gertrude Wister, Rick Colbert, Shipley Allinson, and Cricket Brien. Plus the many trustees, donors, members, visitors, volunteers, and families bringing their expertise, support, and resources. These people s input reminds us that certain causes are worth fighting for, such as the Pink Hill preservation project, the Native Woodland Walk plantings, and the deer exclusion fence to protect Tyler s plant collections. Thanks to the support of friends like you, the shady woodlands, the expansive meadows, and the many quiet hollows of Tyler will live on. We welcome our 75th anniversary as a public garden by embracing what s to come. Our search for a new, full-time executive director began in earnest in late fall 2018; by late spring, our Edible Garden project will be ready to welcome and teach visitors about the benefits of growing your own food. The activities of our 75th celebration reflect our core values and approaches as always: by bringing people and nature together. You are Tyler. It s your dedication and support that makes this possible. Seventy-five years from now, in the year 2094, when the grandchildren of the first graders visiting this year are discovering the wonders of nature here at Tyler for themselves, it will be because of the support of people like you. Your help will bring more growth and positive changes to life at Tyler in the years to come. Join the celebration today! Two aerial views of Tyler 50 years apart. The black and white image is from the mid-1950s; the color image shows Tyler s renovated 19th-century barn. Color image courtesy of Archer & Buchanan, West Chester, PA.
