3 Exhibitions Saturday 1st March - Sunday 19th April Bonsai at the Botanic Gardens An extensive exhibition of Bonsai from Andrew J. Murray s collection will be on display in the Teak House throughout March and April. Watch the Bonsai burst back into life, displaying the splendid spring foliage of maples, flowering quince and cherries, and many other interesting plants. Daily in the Teak House Thursday 23rd April - Sunday 24th May Flowing Forms Three invited artists, Cliona Doyle, Ana Duncan and Des fox, interpret shape and form in nature with their unique individual styles through etching, painting. monoprinting and sculpture. From giant seed heads and luscious fruits to capturing fleeting moments in time, this work explores patterns and forms in nature, both figurative and abstract. Daily in the Gallery Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April Dublin Orchid Fair A wide variety of orchids will be on display during the annual Dublin Orchid Fair, which is being held in the Teak House this year. This event is of interest to both beginner and accomplished growers and will provide an opportunity to source orchids, sundries and books. As part of the fair there will be talks on growing orchids and a tour of the Glasnevin orchid collection. 4 Wednesday 17th - Sunday 28th June An Óige, Annual Photographic Exhibition This Annual Photographic Exhibition, now in its 77th year, is organised by An Óige Photographic Group. It features a wide range of prize-winning images for 2014, including a section exploring images of the National Botanic Gardens. Daily in the Gallery space, Education and Visitor Centre Wednesday 1st July - Monday 3rd August Irish Patchwork Society Exhibition Hands Across the Border 2015 The joint biennial exhibition of the Northern Ireland Patchwork Guild and the Irish Patchwork Society takes place in the National Botanic Gardens during the month of July. The quilts in this exhibition - each in their own unique way focused on the central theme of Reflection are a visual feast. Using a fusion of textiles, art and stories of human experience, presented in a literal patchwork of colours, textures and fabrics, we invite you to join us and engage your senses and imagination as you view a fantastic display of skill. During the exhibition a series of free workshops will be hosted by the IPS for both adults and children. Daily in the Gallery space, Education and Visitor Centre Saturday 18th July and Sunday 19th July Sweet Pea Show The Gardens are delighted to host the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland s Annual Sweet Pea show. This is your opportunity to see a display of Sweet Pea grown on cordons by the leading growers in the country. On Saturday morning over a dozen growers will arrive in the Teak House to transform it into a Sweet Pea Wonderland before the plants are judged, and from midday all are welcome to view the prizewinning sweet peas. 6 April Daily Guided Walks in April: Spring Blossoms Come along to the Gardens and experience the blooming blossoms of Spring. Take a walk amongst our colourful tulips, fragrant daffodils and cherry blossoms and watch the gardens come back to life after the winter months. Daily in the Teak House Thursday 9th April Lecture: Saving our Conifers Tom Christian, Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh. Based at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Tom Christian is Manager of the National Tree Collections of Scotland and the iconic Conifer Conservation Programme. In this lecture, Tom will discuss the work of the conifer conservation programme in areas such as Norway, Japan, Chile and Lebanon. Time: 8.00pm. 8 Wednesday 15th April Conifers in Crisis: the work of the International Conifer Conservation Programme. Irish Tree Society Annual Lecture Some 200 of 615 conifer species worldwide are known to be threatened with extinction by human activities. Since 1991, the ICCP, based in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh has developed a range of initiatives - taxonomic, genetic and horticultural - to conserve the most threatened species. 12 Thursday 14th May Lecture: Alpines in the wild and cultivation Diane Clement is Director of the Seed Exchange for the Alpine Garden Society, the largest seed exchange of its type in the world. She grows an extensive collection of alpine plants in her shady Wolverhampton garden. She is a keen exhibitor, has won many awards and is also an AGS judge. Time: 8.00pm. 13 Sunday 17th May Music in the Gardens Brass quartet concert: Berlin International Brass Founded in 2013, Berlin International Brass is comprised of four accomplished and passionate young musicians, forging new paths for brass chamber music. With a repertoire of works by Gershwin, Faure, Kurt Weil and Hindemith, Berlin International Brass have a busy touring schedule, with dates in the UK, Ireland and Munich so far this year. Explore your heritage with this family of multiinstrumentalists as they play the uilleann pipes, banjo, low whistle, violin and more in a rousing repertoire of traditional Irish music. Mick will also share stories on the history of traditional Irish music and instruments. Time: 2.30pm in the Gallery Sunday 23rd and 30th August Guided Tour: Trees are our Heritage Join us to discover some of the amazing native and nonnative trees growing in the Gardens and find out some interesting facts about trees (from biodiversity to folklore to economic). 20 Events at National Botanic Gardens, Kilmacurragh Located in east County Wicklow, the National Botanic Gardens, Kilmacurragh is the centrepiece of an 18th century estate and is today famous for its conifers, rhododendrons and other acid-loving plants. Kilmacurragh is located about 1 hours drive south of Dublin off the N11. For directions see map below. 20 Booking: / botanicgardens@opw.ie
21 Free Guided Tours will be held twice daily from April onwards until the middle of October at 12.00pm and 3.00pm. Please check the website or locally for seasonally themed guided tours. 22 Saturdays in May Guided Walk: The Plant Hunters Discover all about the famous plant collectors and their connections with Kilmacurragh. Over the years, intrepid plantsmen have travelled widely to collect plants and send seeds and specimens back from the new world. 24 Events for Children Children s Garden Trails An all-weather, all-year activity for kids! Pick up your free trail at the Visitor Centre and embark on a self-guided discovery of the wonderful plants and glasshouses on display in the Gardens. A variety of trails are available, including a Plants Under Cover glasshouse trail and a Plant Passport trail that introduces plants from all around the world. Saturday 18th April, Saturday 16th May & Saturday 27th June Children s Art Workshop: Budding Artists Join our budding artists, a creative workshop especially for younger children taking place once a month, under the watchful eye of artist Niamh Synnott. 30 COMING SOON Sculpture in Context Annual Show Thursday 3rd September - Friday 16th October Sculpture in Context is Ireland s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition, offering an unparalleled opportunity to view Ireland s well established and most promising future artists showing new work. The sculptures will be displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.
