1 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 2, 2015 Press Contact: Nina Sazevich, (415) ; WILD Flowers Spring is Full of Surprises at San Francisco Botanical Garden with an Ever-changing Show of Weird and Wonderful Blossoms April 1 August 31, 2015 SAN FRANCISCO -- As spring arrives in San Francisco, some very WILD flowers come out to play at San Francisco Botanical Garden. Resembling something from outer space, the blue puya sends up massive towers of unearthly emerald-turquoise flowers that bristle with strange protruding spikes. What seems like hundreds of small, open hands extend from the flowers of the monkey s hand tree. And the magic dogwood dazzles the eye with its spiraling, white flowers perched on its limbs like exotic lanterns. San Francisco Botanical Garden, celebrating its 75 th Anniversary this year, is a unique home to a huge variety of remarkable and rare plants, including some no longer found in their native habitats. Fantastical flora from the farthest reaches of the globe can be found in 55 acres of geographically specific gardens from South Africa to Chile. Starting in April and extending through August, the Garden reveals its true allure as the largest portion of its collections comes into bloom. The season also brings vivid and WILD profusions of flowers in the Garden of California Native Plants, the Mediterranean Garden and the Zellerbach Garden of Perennials. It s an ever-changing mosaic of surprises as visitors stroll from one continent to another, taking in the beauty of these naturalistically planted environments and the unusual and stunning plants within them. Blooming events occur frequently at this time some can last for weeks while some may last for just a week or less. Visitors can get the latest on current, must-see flowerings at the Garden entrances or, to plan a visit during peak blooms, follow the Garden on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter for regular photo updates. Visitors are also encouraged to share tips and photos from their Garden adventures with the hashtag #WILDFlowers.

2 Once at the Garden, visitors can take advantage of free docent-led tours and more to learn about the collections. On May 2 nd, the Garden hosts a huge, annual plant sale featuring a number of the unique species on display and also offers classes and activities for families and adults throughout the spring and summer to celebrate the bloom, including a series of Moonlight Walks to explore the sights and scents of the nocturnal Garden. Also on view during this time in the Garden s Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture are special exhibits of the floral portraits of photographer joson and of beautiful botanical prints of Ernest Clayton s hand-painted early 20 th century watercolors of California native plants. Detailed program information can be found below. Some of the not-to-be-missed WILD Flowers include: SPRING (April May) Arthur L. Menzies Garden of California Native Plants: A vibrant seasonal show takes place right in the heart of the city every year as the four-acre Garden of Native California Plants blazes into bloom. With over 700 species on view, the Garden s native wildflower meadow and surrounding arroyos and woodlands come to colorful life with bright blue wild lilac, gleaming golden poppies, delicate white and yellow meadowfoam, purple irises, and more. Puya berteroniana (aqua sapphire tower): A high elevation bromeliad native to the Andes Mountains of central Chile, this surprising pineapple relative sends up massive 8 foot tall flower stalks covered in emerald-turquoise blossoms with bright orange stamens. Its huge stature and extremely rare coloration makes it one of the highlights of the spring bloom. Aloe speciosa (tilt-head aloe): This handsome, tall South African aloe grows up to feet high and has a rosette of silvery bluish-green leaves which tilts to one side. Its spectacular 20-inch cylindrical flower heads are green, white and pink, with protruding orange stamens and are a magnet for hummingbirds. Cornus florida var. urbiniana (magic dogwood): Hailing from the mountains of Eastern Mexico, the flowers are dramatically distinct from other dogwoods. The thin, white bracts are fused at the top, giving them a lantern-like appearance. When in bloom, the tree can be covered in hundreds of white flowers, resulting in a spectacular display of spirals and shapes. Banksia speciosa: Commonly known as the showy banksia, this native of the southern coast of Western Australia lives up to its name with attractive cone-like flower heads up to 5 inches tall and 4 inches wide, and dramatic, saw-toothed leaves. The mature seed pods are quite unique and showy as well. Protea cynaroides (king protea): The national flower of South Africa has the widest

3 range and the largest flower heads of all Protea species. The massive, bowl-shaped inflorescences can reach up to 12 inches in diameter and are a favorite for flower arrangements as one flower is almost an arrangement in and of itself. SUMMER (June August) Mediterranean Garden: A 30-foot hill of ivy in the Garden sat undisturbed for at least 25 years. Named Heidelberg Hill for the 1894 Midwinter Fair, where it was the site of a German village and beer garden, this area has been recently transformed into a stunning new mediterranean garden. Scarlet field poppies bloom en masse at the foot of the hill, and as visitors climb the paths upwards, they can take in a diverse array of blooming salvias, rockroses, lavender, snapdragons and more. Jennie B. Zellerbach Garden of Perennials: This dramatic horseshoe-shaped Garden was designed strictly for its aesthetic appeal and is at its best in summer with a profuse array of flowering perennials including queen of the prarie, masterwort and more. Clematis and other flowering vines trail over three lovely arbors. Chiranthodendron pentadactylon (monkey's hand tree): Ranging from Mexico to Guatemala, this evergreen tree, sacred to the Aztecs, features gorgeous red flowers with protruding claw-like stamens that have an unusual similarity to a monkey's hand. Passiflora parritae: Perhaps no longer found in its native Colombia, this flamboyant passion vine blooms in a profusion of large pendant, flame-orange flowers said to be the largest flower of the genus with widths of 6 to 10 inches. For several weeks prior to blooming, the swelling buds look like little orange pumpkins hanging from the vine. Romneya coulteri (matilija poppy): A beautiful member of the poppy family, this tall shrub, sometimes also called the California tree poppy, has grey-green leaves and large, fragrant, crepe-papery white flowers that have a striking resemblance to a fried egg. This is the largest and showiest of California s native wildflowers. Jovellana violacea: This Jovellana is one of two species native to Chile. An evergreen shrub with small lobed leaves, its sprays of cheerful pale-purple flowers have yellow throats dotted with red spots. RELATED PROGRAMMING The Garden offers free WILD Flower-focused docent tours that take place every Saturday, April 4 to August 29, at 2 PM in addition to its year-round, general tours at 1:30 PM. Visitors of all ages can also ask questions and explore plants in more depth at Garden Interpretation Stations on Sundays, April 5 to August 30, from 1:30-3:30 PM. In addition, visitors can make use of a free smart phone app to explore the collections. Visitors can also find a wealth of resources on plants from around the world in the Helen

4 Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture, Northern California's most comprehensive horticultural library. Ernest Clayton California Wildflowers Images: Botanical Prints from the mid-20th Century, will be on display from May-August. Artist Ernest Clayton painted a series of nearly 200 watercolors of the California native plants that he saw on his many walks around Marin County in the period from 1938 to Presented in a style reminiscent of the arts and crafts tradition of the early 20th century, the fifty prints in the exhibit include images of many well known and valued native plants including California buckeye, matilija poppy, trillium, shooting star and more.
