5 FROM THEOwners Although we ve just celebrated another holiday season and perhaps we ve even made New Year s resolutions, some we ve kept and others have slipped by the way side. Spring seems to somehow always represent a fresh start. It is a time of rebirth, rejuvenation and renewal. During Spring, the axis of the Earth is increasing its tilt relative to the Sun, which in turn rapidly increases the length of daylight. Like you, we anxiously await this time of year and look forward to welcoming back warmth and colour into our lives. In a pursuit to continually grow and improve your visit to Glen Echo, we ve made some improvements over the winter. We ve paved our outdoor nursery stock isles, extended the paved parking area and added additional irrigation. Inside the gift shop, we ve added a change room for your convenience in our expanding fashion department. Due to demand we ve also brought in additional exciting clothing lines and brands that you must see. Our landscape designers have also been busy throughout the winter months completing designs for clients in preparation for the spring. Our design professionals are available to meet with you to discuss your landscaping dreams throughout the year. 10 NEW Perennial Picks for 2016 If you are at all like us, every season you are excited to find out what is new and or improved in perennials. We talk to our favorite growers, pour over catalogues and various websites to learn what is up and coming. Every season breeders and plant hunters come up with thousands of new plants. Here are a few we are anxious to try for ourselves. Most will be available late April or early May but a couple will not be ready until early summer. Come in, talk to our Garden Centre professionals about these and many other exceptional varieties. Gaillardin grandiflora Sunset Series (Blanket Flower) Dwarf compact plants, in a variety of vibrant. colors, which attract many species of butterflies and pollinating bees. They prefer well drained soil, are great in containers and bloom all season long. 16 (35 cm) tall Full Sun Zone 5 Hibiscus Summerific Series (Rose Mallow) These two standout additions to the successful best selling summerific series from Proven Winners have 7-8 wide lowers on compact plants 3 to 4 tall. They attract hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. 3 to 4 tall and wide Full Sun Zone 4 Sunset Sunrise Sunset Flash Sunset Flash has large orange-red flowers and creamy yellow tips. Sunset Mexican is watermelon pink on the inside half and creamy yellow on the outer half. Sunset Popsy has large dark pink flowers with cream tips. Sunset Snappy has large purple-pink flowers with creamy yellow tips. Sunset Sunrise is orange and golden yellow. Forever Purple Sunrise Snappy Heuchera Forever Purple (Coral Bells) Stunning purple glossy leaves with fluted edges, topped with short purplepink flowers in mid to late summer. Heuchera are deer resistant but attract hummingbirds,bees and butterflies. 1 tall by 1-1/2 to 2 wide Partial to Full Shade Zone 5 Berry Awesome Perfect Storm Berry Awesome has blooms of lavender pink, red eye with midnight green deeply lobed leaves. Perfect Storm has blooms of white with a bright red eye and deep red foliage which contrasts nicely to the blooms. Hibiscus are not available until summer and these two may be by special order only. Hosta Curly Fries This unique hosta has been chosen for the Hosta of the Year. It is a miniature with rippled, narrow, arching leaves of chartreuse and mid summer purple flowers. 8 tall by 16 wide Partial to Full Shade Zone 3 Hosta Island Breeze Beautiful gold leaves with dark green margins. 11 Spellbook Lumos 1-1/2 tall and wide Full Sun Zone 5 Hot Rod & deer resistant.. Leucanthemum Spellbook Lumos (Shasta Daisy) This dwarf Shasta will brighten up any garden with it s non-fading yellow flowers. These reblooming beauties flower from mid spring through summer. They are deer resistant but attract bees and butterflies. Panicum virgatum Hot Rod (Switch Grass) The firmly upright blades emerges blue green, then quickly reddens until the entire plant is a rich deep maroon. The airy seed heads appear in late summer, starting tan and then turning burgundy. This native plant is salt tolerant, drought tolerant 3 to 4 tall by 2 to 2-1/2 wide Full Sun Zone 4 Schizachyrium scoparium (Little Bluestem) Smoke Signal - This improved cultivar of our native Little Bluestem has blue green foliage with hints of scarlet red in late summer turning deep red purple in the fall. The tan coloured seed heads appear in the fall. It is drought tolerant and deer resistant. 3 to 4 tall by 2 to 2-1/2 wide Full Sun Zone 4 Smoke Signal Twilight Zone Twilight Zone is another improved cultivar of our native Little Bluestem and is one of the first to colour up in midsummer. It is a naturally upright column of dark green with iridescent silvery mauve highlights and bright purple highlights on the flower stems in the fall.
