Yorkshire in bloom Introduction Introduction The University of Bradford first entered the Yorkshire in Bloom competition in 2006, initially entering the School of Management Site which was awarded a bronze medal. In the two years that followed 2007/8 we received the silver medal for the School of Management site. We did not enter the competition in 2008/9 due to extensive building works being carried out on site which had a major impact on the grounds. We decided in 2010/11 to enter both City Campus and School of Management sites for the first time, with the belief that the entry would give us a guideline for future grounds planning and received a Silver gilt award. In 2011/12 we decided to again enter both sites and learn from the advice given, which was to produce a portfolio with a selection of the memorable moments that capture the changing seasons and our achievements throughout the year. We believed that we could create a better area for staff, students and the local community. In 2012/13 we gained the Gold award and Chairman's award for both sites this was followed up in 2013 with a second gold award. In 2014 we again achived gold award, overall catorgary award and environmental quality award. This was our third consecutive gold award and demonstraits the on going commitment to the grounds by the grounds team. At present both sites are run by a team of five in house gardeners. We encourage staff, students, the local community and schools to get involved and reap the rewards of our produce. Funding for the maintenance of the grounds is provided through Estates and Facilities annual budget. This year we have mentored a local primary school and entered them into this years Yorkshire in Bloom. 2

Yorkshire in bloom Areas of achievement areas of achievement Horticultural Achievement The Green (Sustainable Student Village) - This area has been planted with nature in mind with flowering shrubs and includes an urban pond, which has attracted a family of wild ducks. School of Health s medicinal herb garden - Some of the herbs planted here include rosemary, sage, lavender and thyme. Wildflowers have been planted in various areas for future proposed landscaping of the campus and to provide more spots for our honey bees. We continue to cut down on our shrub bed maintenance as encouraged by Yorkshire in Bloom judges by mulching large areas, using our own mulch from our food waste composter as well as the grounds leaf mould and green waste. A university policy was introduced five years ago where all new planting on campus should only be native, fruit-bearing or nectar-producing species. As a result of this, we continue to maintain four hives, producing the university s own honey. As well as our resident moorhens, herons are now frequent visitors to the pond at the School of Management campus, indicating that the pond is now much healthier. A new fruit bed was introduced, and is managed by students. Created new orchard with local school by the artificial pitches Created vegetable plot on campus. Application for Green Flag Award. Part of Keep Britain Tidy. Creation of Allotments, accessible garden and Sensory Garden. Environmental Responsibility Extra bird and bat boxes were introduced last year in a quieter part of the campus. This has various nest boxes and bird feeding stations and we have also introduced hedgehog houses. Both sites continue to make use of the compost produced from food waste created on site. We have a Rocket composter on each site which collectively compost over 1.5 tonnes of food waste each month. This eliminates the university s need to purchase compost and reduces the amount of organic waste sent to landfill. Community Participation At the School of Management campus, we have extended the staff volunteer garden, utilising the space for growing fruit and vegetables. An outside volunteer group continues to help to clear out our urban pond at the School of Management. This has been a real success. We have a student volunteer group which we have given a small area on the city campus where they grow fruit, vegetables and herbs and tend to it on a weekly basis. Held volunteer butterfly and bird surveys. Created a native hedgerow using a volunteer day to the boundary of campus. 4

Summer 2015 Portfolio Bright building biodiverse roof garden The Biodiverse Roof Garden to the new Bright Building provides both an educational resource to the new sustainable enterprise centre, and a new species rich habitat for wildlife. Planting to the western end includes a native Butterflies and Bees Wildflower Meadow area supplemented with an Annual Cornfield Mix to provide an additional burst of colour during its first year. A small pond planted with native Marginals and Aquatics such as Marsh Marigold, Water Mint, Flag Irises, Rush and Sedge, provides an additional habitat and source of drinking water for wildlife. Planting beds to the eastern end of the Roof Garden comprise of a matrix of Sedums, Grasses, and herbs such as Wild Marjoram, and Thyme. Bird feeding and watering tables, and ladybird houses have also been provided, as well as piles of pebbles and rolls of hemp rope as further invertebrate and insect habitats. areas of achievement 5

Yorkshire in bloom Bright building and stem building - biodiverse landscape areas of achievement The planting around the newly completed Bright Centre and STEM building include a variety of habitats for wildlife. Flowering Ornamental Shrubs including Lavender, He-be, Sedum and Buddliea provide a source of pollen for bees and butterflies. Berrying ornamental plants such as Viburnum, Skimmia, Mahonia and Cotoneaster provide fruit and berries for birds. Evergreen shrubs such as Juniper, Bamboos, Hebes, Escallonia will eventually provide some dense winter ground foraging cover for birds. To the north of the Bright Centre is a large sloping Biodiverse area which will be seeded in Spring 2014 with a native Butterflies and Bees Wildflower Mix and an Annual Cornfield Mix. This combined with the planting of the new flowering and fruit bearing trees such as Wild Cherry, Bird Cherry, Crab Apple, Rowan, Amelanchier, and native Beech hedges will provide a rich haven for wildlife and an educational resource. Tree trunks and plies of brash will also be added to provide habitats for insects and invertebrates. Once the wildflowers have established there is potential to create a mown access paths through the meadow. 6

Summer 2015 Portfolio Atrium landscape terrace The newly landscaped seating space outside the Atrium completed in January 2014 includes 'Living Green retaining walls' planted with wildlife attracting flowering and berrying climbers including Honeysuckles, Rose, Jasmine, Clematis, Pyracantha, Chaenomles and Ceanothus trained onto wires. Edible climbers comprise Vine varieties, and Morella Cherry 'Fans' - (the choice being restricted by the north and east aspects). Sun catching plant beds to the south of the space include a small Specimen Fig tree, and a herb area planted with Lavender, Rosemary, Sage, Mint,Thyme and a Bay Laurel Cone. In spring 2014 some perpetual Strawberries will be planted to the three Steel Tree Planters. areas of achievement Spring bulbs such as Daffodils, Snowdrops, Crocuses and Iris reticulata will provide a splash of early spring colour in the shrub beds. 7

Yorkshire in bloom areas of achievement Bright building sunspace The planting species within the Sunspace has all been specially selected for the environment which they will be growing in. By adopting a "Right Plant Right Place" principle the plants will not only thrive and grow but they will actively improve the air quality and hydration levels within the whole building. This process is essential to help maintain a healthy learn-ing environment as it has been proven that indoor air quality can be up to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air. 8

Summer 2015 Portfolio Grounds Team areas of achievement The universities grounds Team with Mr Brendan Mowforth the chairman of Yorkshire in Bloom Your Fresh Pickings The grounds team grow a large range of herbs, fruits and vegetables on campus and we've been showcasing these on the Your Fresh Pickings stand. The stand has visited the Richmond Building Atrium and the School of Management Atrium. It will be stopping by Student Central soon, before coming home to Estates & Facilities. All the pickings are free to staff and stu-dents and we encourage you to pick your own! There is a whole range of fruits grown on City Campus that are perfect for making jam? We have gooseberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, strawberries and cherries! To make sure these tasty fruits don t go to waste, we're running jam fruit picking sessions. The grounds team also run regular nature trails. 9

Yorkshire in bloom The Nature Trail areas of achievement 1 Student Central Orchard We ve got various types of heritage apples, pears and greengage keeping old species alive. Rows of lavender have been planted together with crab apple trees which attract bees. The old stone horse trough has been repositioned and planted with herbs for staff and students to pick. 2 Longside Edible Planting The site has been planted with lots of edible species such as gooseberries and blackcurrants which are quickly picked by staff and students during fruiting season! These are grown alongside lavender, sage and rosemary as well as apple and damson trees and other various wildlifeattracting shrubs and wildflower borders. 3 Forest Garden The idea of a forest garden refers to a garden structured like a woodland, with multiple layers of mostly perennial plants that have multiple uses and interact in beneficial ways. In line with the University s planting policy, this proposal contains a diverse range of edible plants as well as plants with wildlife benefits. 4 Amphitheatre The centre of the campus was created to form a perfect amphitheatre to be used for leisure studies and many other student activities. This area contains many tree species including the Ginko, Known as a living fossil, the Ginkgo biloba is one of the world s oldest living tree species: it was around 350 million years ago. 5 Student Central Veg Beds Consisting of three areas that are planted with verities of fruit and vegetables for student use. 6 Wildflower This area is divided into two by a walkway contains one side perennial wildflower mix and the other half consists of a annual mix which has a different colour theme every year 7 Stem Building The planting around the newly completed Bright Building and STEM Building include a variety of habitats for wildlife. Flowering Ornamental Shrubs including Lavender, Hebe, Sedum and Buddliea provide a source of pollen for bees and butterflies. Berrying ornamental plants such as Viburnum, Skimmia, Mahonia and Cotoneaster provide fruit and berries for birds. Evergreen shrubs such as Juniper, Bamboos, Hebes, and Escallonia will eventually provide some dense winter ground foraging cover for birds. 8 The Green Student Village This area is the University s Sustainable Student Village. The site has been designed and landscaped with nature in mind, consisting grassed areas, a wildflower border, shrubberies and native trees. There is an urban pond which attracted our first family of wild ducks in the first year of opening in There are bird nesting sites and 6 bat boxes built into the sides of the blocks. 9 The Sedum Roof Norcroft Centre The Sedum roof covers an area of 100m2 and provides the building with a natural thermal insulation and noise reduction as well as providing habitat for animals, birds and insects 10 Bright Building Biodiversity Roof Garden The biodiverse Roof Garden to the new Bright Building provides both an educational resource to the new sustainable enterprise centre, and a new species rich habitat for wildlife. Planting to the western end includes a native Butterflies and Bees Wildflower Meadow area supplemented with an Annual Cornfield Mix to provide an additional burst of colour during its first year. A medicinal herb garden has been planted to coincide with the opening of the School of Health in the summer of Various herbs have been planted here which hold healing qualities such as fennel, lavender, parsley, peppermint, sage, rosemary, chives and thyme. 14 Peace Garden This is a quiet area on campus designed for people to sit and rest planted with local wildlife in mind and containing a small water feature. 15 Accessible allotments A new garden created in 2015 for both staff and student to include an allotment and sensory garden. It has been designed to include plants that represent the senses touch, taste, smell and sound; all areas are accessible for all. The student community growing area includes growing plots which are managed and maintained by student groups this area also forms part of the university s latest orchard. 16 Bees This patch is also home to our apiary which houses four beehives and produces local University honey. A part of this surrounding area has been given to the Peace Studies department who have designed and planted species which will supply food sources for the bees nearby. 17 Shearbridge Orchard Planted by a local school as part of the universities commitment to local engagement. We ve got various types of heritage apples, pears and greengage keeping old species alive. We have also included the established green wall which supports the muga pitches 18 Pemberton Walk During the summer months this area is a showcase of summer bedding plants and colourful flower basket displays and window boxes. There is also an area for rose bushes, selected for their beauty and highly fragrant scents. We have a new proposal for this area which will include soft fruits and herbs. 19 Bulb and Memorial Garden An area dedicated to the planting of memorial trees and planted in memory of passed students and staff with a vast amount of spring bulbs. 20 Pemberton Nature Area This is the University s oasis - a small section of woodland left to nature with very little interference from our grounds staff. We have added bird boxes and an insect hotel made from recycled materials. The grassed area is dedicated to spring bulb plants and is increased every year by first year student volunteers planting daffodils, tulips, snowdrops and bluebells. 21 Rocket Composter The Rocket composter composts all university food waste, producing 2 tonnes of top quality compost per month. It takes two weeks to pass through the composter and is matured in the bays opposite, before using on the campus grounds. Fruit & Veg Areas We encourage students and staff to take advantage of the edible campus by providing a wide variety of indigenous fruit, vegetables and herbs on campus. areas of achievement 11

Summer 2015 Portfolio Review of the Past Year We had a very successful bulb planting event to celebrate Dig Together Day on 23rd November. In the local school children helped us plant crocus bulbs as part of the universities commitment to the Bradford crocus cancer appeal. It is a local charitable initiative between the University of Bradford, Yorkshire Cancer research, T&A, and the Sovereign Healthcare trust. As part of our Wild about gardens week we invited local school children to help plant fruit trees in the new orchard we then went onto learn about different habitats for bugs and learnt how to make a insect house Review of the Past Year Gardeners, Peter Winn and Robert Ideson continue to lead the Biodiversity Campus Tour wonderfully, showing off the campus and the work of the grounds team. The six members of staff taking part learnt all about the planting that s happening around campus providing food for humans and animals. We ve now got a herb garden, orchard, Italian garden, allotment area, Gooseberries and Plum trees, ponds, bats and birds of many kinds on site. 19

Yorkshire in bloom Raised Bed Garden Planters Review of the Past Year The sensory/accessible garden is wheelchair friendly, designed to provide horticultural therapy for students and staff, especially for those with disabilities, The innovative raised garden beds for accessible gardening allow users to reach all the cultivation area, the units are also suitable for children s use and allow scope for creativity and fit in well with the universities STEM project. The layout of raised garden beds helps foster social interaction between gardeners, while the work itself improves fitness and acts as a liaison between the senses of touch, sight and smell. Flowers, herbs, vegetables and even small fruits can be grown, thanks to the generous volume of soil 20
