How can you help our streams and beautify your home landscape at the same time? You can create a rain garden: a shallow, vegetated depression that collects, absorbs, cools, and filters storm water runoff before it reaches our waters. In this two-part class, you will first learn about the basic principles and science of rain gardens, then participate in the creation of an actual rain garden at Cornell Plantations. Designed with native plants that require little maintenance, rain gardens are an inexpensive, relatively simple way to do our part in keeping our waters clean while simultaneously adding value and beauty to our yards. This workshop will include instruction and meditation experience while tuning in to the season s natural rhythms and cycles. In the beautiful and tranquil setting of the botanical garden, the workshop will help you cultivate your own inner garden and plant the seeds of wellbeing in your life. In this class you will learn to create the braided rim, which adds an elegant finishing touch to many types of gourd art. Using real leather lacing on a prepared gourd bowl, you will leave with a beautiful finished piece. Class fee includes

Pre-registration is required. $60; $55 Plantations members, volunteers and Cornell students Instructor: Terry Noxel, President, New York State Gourd Society Layering Watercolors with Peggy Macnamara Class Code: BA-1025 Saturday & Sunday, October Saturday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM; Sunday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Guest artist and author Peggy Macnamara, artist-in-residence at the Field Museum and professor at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, will teach her layering watercolor technique to all levels, in this special two-day, ten-hour intensive workshop. Ms. Macnamara s work emphasizes the study of nature in all its forms plants, habitats, birds, insects and other wildlife. For this workshop, all natural subjects are welcome; some bird mounts, live plants and habitat photos will be provided, but participants are free to bring their own subjects. Bring a bag lunch, your watercolor materials, and 300lb paper (required). This workshop is presented in partnership with the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI), Ithaca Chapter. NOVEMBER Home & Garden Create Your Own Indoor Bonsai Class Code: HG-1113 Thursday, November 13; 1:00 to 4:00 PM After a short lecture and demonstration of how a bonsai is developed from common nursery stock, master bonsai artist and educator William Valavanis will assist each student in creating their own indoor bonsai to take home. Most bonsai are winter-hardy outdoor species which cannot be cultivated in the home. However tropical species which have been hand selected from Florida growers will be used for this workshop. A few developed bonsai will be used to illustrate the training techniques as well as provide inspiration. Students will select their own plants and will design, prune, wire and pot their own indoor bonsai. Personalized instruction will be provided so each student will develop a beautiful bonsai which can be cultivated indoors. Registration fee includes the tropical pre-bonsai, ceramic container, soil, wire and the use of bonsai tools during the workshop. 3 Gourd Basket Class Code: BA-1115 Saturday, November 15; 1:00 to 5:00 PM Learn gourd-crafting basics as you create a simple yet elegant gourd basket. You will start with a whole gourd and cut, clean and finish it into a basket. Please bring a rotary tool (dremel) if you have one (the instructor has a few that students can share), an apron, and a dust mask. Registration fee includes a cleaned hard-shell gourd and all other materials. Pre-registration is required. $50; $45 Plantations members, volunteers and Cornell students Instructor: Graham Ottoson, Hands on Gourds, Ithaca, NY DECEMBER Holiday Gourd Ornaments Class Code: BA-1203 Wednesday, December 3; 6:00 to 8:00 PM Join us for a creative gourd activity making a dozen small ornaments out of two-inch gourds. Using inks with metallic highlights, everyone s hanging ornaments will be gorgeous and unique! Please bring an apron, protective gloves and an empty egg carton to take your ornaments home. Class fee includes: gourds, metallic inks, hanger, and finishing spray. Pre-registration is required. $35; $30 Plantations members, volunteers and Cornell students Instructor: Raylene Ludgate, Cornell Plantations, and Treasurer, New York State Gourd Society Guided Tour Winter Garden Tour Saturday, December 6; 1:00 p.m. Come enjoy a guided walk through the Mullestein Family Winter Garden as it enters its prime season. This unique circular garden is designed as a showcase for plants with intriguing winter characteristics, such as evergreen foliage, colorful bark, persistent fruit, and unusual growth habits. Learn about the plants you can use to make your home landscape beautiful and enjoyable all year long, or simply savor the peaceful splendor of a garden that is designed to be beautiful in winter. A clean energy future depends on commitments from the political, corporate, and NGO sectors. Governor Lingle will discuss her involvement with the Hawai I Clean Energy Initiative, the US Department of Energy and the Aspen Institute to describe how a clean energy future is possible.
