1 Spouses Program To register for the spouses program, participants must complete the general registration form. All tours will assemble in the Hospitality Suite in Clayton Hall. Please note: There will be no refunds on spouse tours after July 22, unless minimum attendance requirements are not met. Built by the U.S. government in 1809, the building served as an arsenal in the War of 1812 and during the Mexican War. It was a schoolhouse, before becoming a restaurant in More information may be found by visiting their website at: Battle of Brandywine One of the major battles during the Revolutionary War fought on a very hot September 11, The tour will start at the Visitors Center for an introduction to the battle and a video, which describes the strategy and the circumstances surrounding this most fatal battle of the War for Independence. Tour Washington s headquarters and drive through the countryside as your guide relates the details of this pivotal battle. The Battle of Brandywine will be commemorating its 225 th anniversary this September. (Please note: The tour on Monday will just be a driving tour since the Battlefield Park is not open on Mondays). This tavern was the center of life in colonial Philadelphia. 6 In 1844, Gibraltar was built for the Brinckle family, named for the high, rocky prominence on which it stands. In 1909, Hugh Rodney Sharp [ ] and his wife Isabella Mathieu dupont Sharp purchased the property and began extensive additions and renovations to the buildings and grounds, creating the 6- acre estate that exists today. The Sharps hired landscape architect Marian Cruger Coffin, one of the first and most accomplished female landscape architects in the United States, to design Gibraltar s formal gardens. Between 1916 and 1923, Gibraltar s garden took form consisting of a series of garden "rooms," each with a unique character and purpose. Hand-forged iron gates and railings and the Sharp s collection of statuary, urns, and fountains complete the design. Your tour highlights include a visit to Eleutherian Mills, a beautiful Georgian-style house which was the first dupont home in America and served five generations of duponts, the restored French-style parterre garden and the production area where powdermen and machinists demonstrate the operation of the massive stone mills, mill race and waterwheel bringing to life the day when waterpower was the source of energy. The Hotel dupont, built in 1913, by the giant E.I. dupont de Nemours & Co. has quite a history. Presidents have stayed there, celebrities of stage and screen have performed in the Playhouse, the country s first in-hotel theater and its two restaurants & the Gold Ballroom have been the scene of many posh dinners and society balls. More information may be found by visiting their website at: Historic New Castle A city delightfully preserved as it was in the 18 th and early 19 th century when it served as Delaware s capital, the center of trade and travel and home to many well-to-do merchants, lawyers, and governmental officials. Highlights include a tour of the elegant Federal-style home of George Read II, a prominent lawyer and son of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, followed by a walking tour of the town to hear about the city s history and the

History comes alive as we walk in the footsteps of our Founding Fathers along brick walkways and cobblestone streets in Penn's Green Countrie Towne. We begin with a visit to the Amish Farm & House for an introduction to their most unusual lifestyle. Your guide will provide commentary on their lifestyle, transportation, clothing, church services, weddings and more. Then tour the Back Country driving through their beautifully silent farmlands passing one-room schoolhouses, grossdadis, cemeteries, a carriage maker, and working farms where mules and horses pull the machinery in the fields. Stops at a roadside stand for homemade treats and a quilt shop and then a very special treat awaits you. You are cordially invited to attend a reenactment of an Old Order Amish wedding ceremony.
