6 In 1844, Gibraltar was built for the Brinckle family, named for the high, rocky prominence on which it stands. In 1909, Hugh Rodney Sharp [ ] and his wife Isabella Mathieu dupont Sharp purchased the property and began extensive additions and renovations to the buildings and grounds, creating the 6- acre estate that exists today. The Sharps hired landscape architect Marian Cruger Coffin, one of the first and most accomplished female landscape architects in the United States, to design Gibraltar s formal gardens. Between 1916 and 1923, Gibraltar s garden took form consisting of a series of garden "rooms," each with a unique character and purpose. Hand-forged iron gates and railings and the Sharp s collection of statuary, urns, and fountains complete the design. Recently restored by Preservation Delaware, Inc. a program founded in 1993 to preserve Delaware s architectural heritage and historic settings, this property was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in More information may be found by visiting their website at: Hagley Museum Beautifully located along the Brandywine River with some 230 acres of trees and flowering shrubs, Hagley is the site of first black powder yards of the dupont family.
