Naperville Garden Club Projects Civic Activities Conservation Garden Therapy Scholarships Summer s Magic The enchantment begins in springtime with bright daffodils and tulips, but it is the delightful days of summer when Mother Nature weaves her spell of wonder in the garden. The beauty and perfume of your favorite rose, a rainbow glistening on a drop of morning dew, the astonishing growth of a plant from one day to the next; these are but a few of the charming delights to watch as summer days go by. The merry tricksters of the garden will be there too, challenging us to outwit them as they make a lovely flower disappear. For 79 years, the members of Naperville Garden Club have created a little magic in the garden to delight family, friends and neighbors. Come join us as we celebrate Summer s Magic.

Magic Wand Section B Memorable Magicals Eligible for Table Artistry Award A functional table for four which must include a centerpiece of fresh and/or dried plant material staged on 6ft long by 30 inch deep tables. It will be staged in area D. A functional table is a table set for actual service of food, capable of functioning for dining as displayed. Napkins must be used. Class 5. Fairy Dust A type II exhibition table staged in area E on tables 36 deep. Maximum width of design is 36. May NOT include a decorative unit (flower arrangement), but must include some plant material, fresh and/or dried. A frame 30 inches wide by 42 inches high may be obtained in advance from the committee & used, if desired. A background must be provided by the exhibitor. Electrical outlet available by reservation to design chairman. Class 6. Flying Carpet A functional picnic for two. Staged in area F on artificial turf. Maximum space is 4 square feet. Fresh and/or dried plant material.

3 DIVISION II-DESIGN It s Magical! ******************** Section A. White Magic, Black Magic Eligible for Designers Choice Award Class 1. Mystique A design inspired by the title staged on a table in area A. Maximum space 3ft wide by 3ft deep. Fresh and /or dried plant material. A background must be provided by the exhibitor. Be aware that the background can be viewed from the rear. Underlay permitted. Class 2. Illusions Transparency design: A creative design that includes see-through elements that permit some components to be viewed through others. Staged on pedestals in area C. Fresh and/or dried plant material. A background may be provided by the exhibitor. Underlay permitted. Pedestals are burgundy plastic squares: Three pedestals are 2ft x 2 ft x 2ft. One pedestal (*a) is 3ft x 3ft x 16 inches high. Height is unlimited. Class 3. That old black magic has me in its spell. A design expressive of the title. Fresh and/or dried plant material. Staged on tables in area B. Maximum space 3ft wide by 3ft deep. A background must be provided by the exhibitor. Be aware that the background can be viewed from the rear. Underlay permitted. General Rules and Information 1. Entries will be received on Saturday, June 28, 2008 Between 7: :00 AM. NO ENTRIES WILL BE RECEIVED AFTER 9:00 AM. 2. Judging will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. The show will be open to the public at 1:00 PM and remain open until 4:00 PM. 3. Only required personnel (show chairmen, clerks, horticulture and design classification chairmen, judges and awards chairmen) will be allowed in the exhibit area during judging. 4. All exhibits are to be removed promptly between 4:30 5:00pm on Saturday. The Flower Show Committee will discard anything left after this time. 5. Property should be marked inconspicuously with exhibitor s name and address. The Flower Show committee cannot be responsible for loss or damage. 6. Exhibitors are responsible for space reserved & must provide a substitute if unable to exhibit. Notify the Entries Chairman IMMEDIATELY. 7. NO ARTIFICIAL PLANT MATERIAL may be used in any part of the show. Fresh plant material may not be treated or painted in any manner. 8. Judging will be by National Garden Clubs Accredited Judges in Accordance with The Handbook for Flower Shows, 2007 Revised Edition and any subsequent changes as published in The National Gardener. The decision of the judges is final. 9. Plants on state conservation list, grown by exhibitor or obtained in a legal manner and so marked are allowed.

4 AWARDS The NGC system of Awarding shall be used throughout the show. Only one first place, 90 or above (blue ribbon), one second place, 85 or above (red ribbon), one third place, 80 or above (yellow ribbon), and one or more honorable mention, 75 or above (white ribbon), may be awarded in each class or subclass. DIVISION I HORTICULTURE NGC TOP EXHIBITOR AWARDS General Requirements: 1. All plant material must be fresh and grown by the exhibitor. 2. Exhibit must be a blue ribbon winner scoring 95 or above. 3. Exhibit must be NAMED as to genus, species and cultivar. 4. Each section must have at least three (3) classes. Eligible classes are designated in the schedule. 5. An award must be withheld if no designated exhibit meets specific requirements for the award. 6. There is no minimum number of exhibits required. Award of Horticulture Excellence- A division award may be awarded to the most correctly named exhibit scoring 95 or more and judged to be the finest in the entire Horticulture division. A rosette of green, orange, and blue ribbons. Arboreal Award- This section award may be awarded to only one named exhibit scoring 95 or above in Section A. Rosette of two shades of green ribbons. Award of Merit- This section award may be awarded to a named blue ribbon exhibit scoring 95 points or more in each designated section of plants. No more than five may be awarded. Rosette of orange ribbons. Sections B,C, D, E, & G. DIVISION II Design Rules 1. Advance reservations are required in all design classes. Contact Diane Greenawalt, Entries Chairman to reserve your place. See schedule for dates and times. 2. Exhibitors are responsible for space reserved & must provide a substitute if unable to exhibit. Notify the Design Entries Chairman immediately. 3. Fresh plant material may NOT be treated in any way. Dried plant material may be treated, painted, or embellished. Contrived flowers or leaves constructed of recognizable plant material is permitted. 4. Cut fruits or vegetables and all potted plants in soil are not permitted. No Artificial plant material is allowed. 5. Landscapes or scenes are not permitted in the Design Division. 6. Plant material used in the design division need not have been grown by the exhibitor. 7. Accessories are permitted. 8. Entries must be checked and passed by the design classification chairman before the exhibitor leaves the floor. 9. An underlay may be used and may overhang the edge of staging. Design may have unlimited height. 10. The official American flag or any other national flags may NOT be used. 11. You may list the plant material (if known) used in an entry on a 3 x 5 white index card. A second 3 x5 card of intent is also permitted.

5 DIVISION II DESIGN NGC TOP EXHIBITOR AWARDS General Requirements: 1. Exhibit, either Creative or Traditional, must be a blue ribbon winner scoring 95 or above. 2. Eligible classes, number of exhibits required and any special requirements are indicated in the schedule. 3. A minimum of three classes with at least four exhibits each is required for each award. 4. Judges must withhold an award if no exhibit meets the requirements. 5. No section is eligible for more than one Top Exhibitor Award. Designer s Choice Award- This section award may be awarded to a blue ribbon winner scoring 95 points or more in Section A. Rosette of Purple Ribbons. Table Artistry Award- This section award may be awarded to a blue ribbon winner scoring 95 or above in Section B. Rosette of Burgundy Ribbons. 6 Division I Horticulture Rules 1. Horticulture entries are open to all amateur gardeners. Entry cards will be available at the show and prior to the show from the Horticulture Entries Chairman. 2. All specimens must be fresh plant material grown by exhibitor. Container grown plants must have been grown by the exhibitor for at least 90 days. (SINCE MARCH 28). Combination plantings must have been in exhibitor s possession and grown together for at least 6 weeks. A saucer must be provided for all potted plants. 3. Entry cards should be filled out in advance if possible. Each card must include the exhibitor s name and address. Address labels (2 per entry) will speed completion of cards and help at registration. 4. All horticulture specimens must be labeled with their correct botanical (binomial) name. Genus, species, and/or variety/cultivar. The common name may also be given. EXAMPLE: Paonia lactiflora Sarah Bernhardt (Chinese peony Sarah Bernhardt ). All else being equal, the most completely named specimen will receive the most points. 5. Upon entering the horticulture room, proceed to the classification table. Your exhibit will then be placed by the placement committee. All exhibits must be in place by 9am. 6. All entries must be checked by the Classifications Committee. Classes in a section may be subdivided at the direction of the Classifications Chairman. 7. Each entry must be clean, well groomed and free of pests or diseases. Any other not listed Section J -COLLECTIONS ~Fire Burn & Cauldron Bubble~ Eligible for Collector s Showcase Award A collection consists of 5 or more different named cut flowers, container grown plants, branches, etc.. displayed in separate similar containers. Specimens must be of one genus such as Rosa or plants with like characteristics such as succulents. They are judged for horticultural perfection. If all this is equal, then the most attractive staging is considered. Class 57. Cut flowering specimens Class 58. Cut non-flowering specimens Class 59. Herbs Class 60. Potted specimens 8. Cut specimens will be displayed in a clear bottle supplied by the exhibitor. The bottle should have no decorations and be in proportion to the size of the specimen. When a class requires more than one specimen per entry, uniformity of size, color & form are important considerations. 11. An exhibitor may make more than one entry per class, if each is a different genus, species, variety, cultivar, type or color. The NGC Standard System of Awarding shall be used. See page 6 of schedule for explanation. 12. If the plant that you wish to exhibit isn t listed in the schedule it will go in the appropriate category under ANY OTHER. 8 Division I-Horticulture ~Earth s Magic~ A garden is a magical threshold between the will of humans and the natural inclinations of the wild.
