As owner along with his wife Simone of Vineland Nurseries, Jim specializes in dwarf and unusual evergreens, Japanese Maples, Bamboos, Rhododendrons and Heathers. Currently, Jim is instructing Horticultural Landscape and Design at Mohawk College. He has lectured throughout Ontario and the United States on numerous garden topics to garden societies, clubs and other groups. Jim has also been teaching at horticultural colleges and Niagara Parks. As a certified arborist, Jim was the past supervisor of the Arboretum and Trails system at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington. 2 Minutes of the January 18, 2016 Meeting President Janice Harte opened the meeting at 7:09 p.m. She welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming out on such a snowy evening. Janice introduced the executive and board of directors for Our guest speaker for the evening was David Culp, a member of our society and an enthusiastic Bonsai gardener. David gave an excellent, informative presentation on the Art of Bonsai. He was thanked by Janice Harte. Business: Correspondence consisted of: a thank you from the City for sponsoring a category in the Trillium Awards and a thank you from Community Care for our donation and food from the Annual Meeting. Please note: S.O.O.S. (Southern Ontario Orchid Society) ANNUAL SHOW & SALE, February 13th & 14th, 2016 at the Toronto Botanical Garden, 777 Lawrence Avenue East, Toronto, Ontario. Minutes: Motion to approve the minutes of the October 19, 2015 General Meeting. Donna van Weenen/Maria Picard. Carried. General Information: A new computer has been purchased for the Society. March 6 th will be St. Catharines Seedy Sunday. Please help with promotion. Volunteers are needed between 9 and 4.See Gwen Simpson to help. If you have saved seeds for this, be sure they are labeled. A Give Away Table: is planned so please donate items such as books, current magazines, extra tools and sundry garden items. You will be asked to take home anything that is left. Any questions contact Sandy Martin or Janice Harte through the Society . Christmas Social will be held Dec. 5, 2016 at Sweets Cafe. Items for the newsletter must be submitted before the last day of the month. Donna van Weenen is secretary to complete a one year term only. Now is the time to volunteer for these positions while there is lots of time for learning. Niagara College is a good source for plants. Please check the website for current hours niagaracollegegreenhouse.com.they now carry gift cards. Remember that as a member of the Society you may use the college library by showing your membership card. This does not give you borrowing privileges. Hortus TV Sandy Martin recommended that members take advantage of the 7 day free trial being offered. This is an excellent source of gardening information. February Speaker will be Jim Lounsbery. The topic is pruning. 3 Society Contact Information President s Report As I am writing this, Robbie Burns celebrations have just finished. One of my favourite songs is "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose". It's amazing how flowers can lift your spirits and bring a smile to your face. If you enjoy flowers, especially orchids, don't forget the Orchid Show at the Toronto Botanical Gardens February Winter is a great time to plan your garden. Thumbing through the latest seed catalogs and garden magazines can take away the winter blahs and inspire you to do great things for your garden. We are hosting St. Catharines Seedy Sunday, March 6th at the Dunlop Senior's Centre. Come by, volunteer and see what's new. Sandy has lined up some great speakers for workshops which will be given throughout the day. Tell your friends, relatives, church members, group organizations about this wonderful event. Maybe this might be the year you want to try those heirloom tomatoes. Seedy Sunday offers you the opportunity to purchase these seeds. By joining the Society, members learn from expert speakers, take part in workshops, and visit garden shows. Society members also obtain discounts at various garden centres. As a Society, we promote the beautification of our city, donate funds for parks and public spaces, provide bursaries for horticultural students at Niagara College, help sponsor the St. Catharines Trillium Awards, and provide community service. Most important of all, we have the opportunity to meet with our fellow gardeners.
