1 The mission of the Society is to provide leadership and assist in the promotion and education in all areas of gardening, horticulture and environmental issues, thereby beautifying and providing enjoyment for all. General Meeting - Monday, May 21-7:00 pm Grace Mennonite Church, 677 Niagara St. (between Linwell and Lakeshore) Speaker: Paula Berketo Topic: Creation and History of the Oakes Garden Theatre, Niagara Falls. In This Issue: Highlights of April Meeting Financial Report April 2018 Volunteer Opportunities Plant Sale Information Paula is Principal Landscape Architect Design & Consultant, Provincial Highways Standards Board. Paula will give a very interesting talk on how the garden was created and its history. Some of the same people who where responsible for the RBG had a hand in bringing this garden into existence. Opened in 1937, the designers of Oakes Garden Theatre capitalized on the contours of the landscape to create a curved pergola overlooking a central amphitheatre. The shaded lily ponds and formalized gardens offer visitors a tranquil escape in the heart of Niagara Falls. Bordered by ornamental iron gates and Queenston limestone, Oakes Garden Theatre provides a spectacular entranceway to Queen Victoria Park at the foot of Clifton Hill. Garden Tour Poster Society News Upcoming Events Silent Auction May Fund Raiser Summer Garden Walks Membership form Volunteer Hours form Refreshments for the May meeting will be provided by Marlene Cunningham, Donna van Weenen, Ilona Brosnan, Rose & Vince Setosta, Dorathea Kazoks. Thanks to Catherine Edwards, Diane Morley, Linda Olsson and Gwen Simpson for the April meeting refreshments. 8 Upcoming Events PLANT SALE 2018 Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 Bill Burgoyne Arena on Linwell Road Preparation Day Friday, May 11, 8:30 am 5:00 pm Plant Sale Saturday, May 12, 8:00 am 1:00 pm Members can drop off their plant contributions anytime between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. Please remember to label plants with the name, colour of the bloom, height and whether best in sun or shade. Extra plant labels will be available. It helps to give your plants a good watering the day before you bring them along to the arena. We will take plants on Saturday morning before the start of the sale, but only if they are properly labelled and ready to be put out on a table. Volunteers There will be approximately 40 tables to set up first thing on Friday morning. Most volunteers will be involved in receiving plants and checking them before they are placed out on the tables. In the afternoon, we need a good sized crew to help with pricing all the plants. Coffee and tea will be available and a lunch will be provided if you are working through the middle of the day. (Donations of sandwiches and baked goods would be appreciated.) Once again we are asking volunteers on Friday to bring a folding chair, especially if they are working through the day or during the lunch hour. This will help with the expenses incurred when renting tables and chairs. Volunteers start at 8:00 am to finish setting up and have everyone ready for the start of the sale. We need: - four cashiers and eight counters - volunteers on the doors and others to help customers carry out their purchases - other volunteers on the floor to help the public with sales - help with taking down the tables and cleaning up at the end of the morning Please remember that the plant sale is for the public. It is one of our most important fundraisers, and needs to be successful as the money raised is used for beautification projects in the city. Consequently we have a policy of no advance sales to members of the Society. Members may purchase plants at the sale along with members of the public. The volunteers on Saturday may arrange for someone to buy plants on their behalf or else they can purchase plants themselves after 11:00 am. If you have any questions, call Diana at
