Children and grownups! should be inspired to love, appreciate, and take care of the everyday green space around us, from our own backyards to parks and all outdoor spaces. Little things have a big impact, like planting the right grass for your climate. We all can pitch in and keep the earth healthy for the next generation. The best way to learn about the environment is to get outdoors and enjoy it! 8

BACKSTORY I I wasn t born lucky. I used to be just a scared little pup, living all alone on the street. I didn t have a house to sleep in, a blanket to curl up with, or a yard to play in.

It was filled with green grass and clean air. The more I played outside, the stronger and more powerful I became. That s when I realized how important well maintained green spaces are to everyone.

9 BACKSTORY I I wasn t born lucky. I used to be just a scared little pup, living all alone on the street. I didn t have a house to sleep in, a blanket to curl up with, or a yard to play in. Then one day my dreams came true. I was found by a kind man who gave me a great home, a comfy blanket, AND a great name Lucky! Finally, I had a big yard to call my own. It was filled with green grass and clean air. The more I played outside, the stronger and more powerful I became. That s when I realized how important well maintained green spaces are to everyone. But, I soon learned not everyone cares about their surroundings like I do. On a walk around my neighborhood I saw bad guys like Carbon Creep, Dust Demon, Dr. Runoff and Heatfreak ruining the green spaces. I had to fight back! So that s when I put my blanket on like a superhero s cape and became TurfMutt. I decided to use my powers to spread the word that we all need to work together. We have to stop the bad guys, and protect our turf. But there s no way I can stop them all by myself. I found some new friends who are a big help. They re the good guys who are specially equipped to help keep things cool and green Big Rooty, Mighty Squirt, The Whoosh, Prof. BioLogic, and GrassMan. Together we call ourselves The Outdoor Powers! SUPERPOWERS: Lucky dons his green cape when it s GO TIME and blasts off with his Outdoor Powers, helping rescue the planet, one yard at a time. Green Ranger is a miniature and masked patch of grass, the foot soldier of the Outdoor Powers. SUPERPOWERS: In a flash, Green Ranger waves and spreads, trapping carbon dioxide, reducing storm water runoff, and sharing oxygen while using his roots to prevent soil erosion and help create larger green spaces in backyards, public parks, and more. Professor Botany is the bushy-tailed brains of the Outdoor Powers, with a college degree in master growing. SUPERPOWERS: Professor Botany busies herself on the back end she maps out complicated greening plans for the Outdoor Powers and teaches kids about plants from the comfort of her lofty tree nest. 10

Water Warrior, made up of precious water, is the aquatic avenger. SUPERPOWERS: H-2-Oh-NO-you-don t. Water Warrior might be damp and drop-size but he s an irrigating force, diving deep into the soil to mount a hydrating force to help plants grow. The Oxygenator is the one-man wind farm of the Outdoor Powers. SUPERPOWERS: The Oxygenator harnesses his power for pollination and brings fresh air in big gusts to plants and people everywhere. 11

Dust Demon throws dirt, pollutants, and other particles into the air, taking precious soil to places it doesn t need to go. EVIL POWERS: Tons of healthy soil are blown away by Dust Demon every year, as he fires up his gritty, gray gusts to FULL BLAST mode, whipping and whizzing through backyards across the country. Dr. Runoff is more mad scientist than your average doc armed with extensive knowledge of the pollutants that end up in rainwater when it runs off pavement and into waterways. EVIL POWERS: Dr. Runoff loves a good rainstorm; he pushes the rainwater, funneling it into streams from cement, pavement, and other hard surfaces to help usher nasty chemicals and pollutants along the way. Heat Freak is a ball of flames, and packs the hottest temper of all of the Environmental Villains. EVIL POWERS: Big, built-up parts of cities absorb the sun s heat like nothing else. Heat Freak works hard to use his fiery form to bake areas like patches of pavement that don t have the luxury of cool tree shade. 12
