2 Photos of Awareness Campaign and Clean Lake Activities Tomok Photo 1: Community members arrive for a day of Clean Lake Activities with traditional Batak canoes for the work in shallow water. This bay was the target of the day s activities because it is an important mooring area for public boats traveling between Parapat and Tomok. Photo 2: Workers clear water hyacinths by hand-pulling and then load them on the truck shown in the background for disposal on land. Photo 3: The small pick-up truck in the photo above proved to be inadequate for the volume of water hyacinths removed from the shoreline. The local cleaning office provided their truck to help finish the job in Tomok. Photo 4: Workers take a much needed break for lunch and rest. Volunteers were provided lunch and snacks along with a small honorarium in acknowledgement of their hard work to clean garbage from the lakeshore and remove water hyacinths. Annex 2 page 1

3 Photo 5: Small boats were used in Tomok to ferry the water hyacinths and trash from the shallow water to the shore where it was then transported by truck to an onshore disposal site. Although the shallow water is a bit murky with sediment from all of the hand-pulling activities, the workers did an outstanding job removing the entire plant and root. An inspection by project staff four months later showed the effort was worthwhile: no water hyacinths had taken hold and water clarity had returned to normal. Photo 14: Removing water hyacinths by hand is very difficult work, but volunteers are eager to help out. A total of 271 people volunteered for clean lake activities in the five towns included in the project. Photo 15: Vera Situmorang (front, center), local project coordinator with the LTHF, gets right in the water along with everyone else to remove water hyacinths in Ajibata. Ms. Situmorang participated in an individual technical exchange visit to Lake Champlain where she learned about local initiatives to manage the lake and rivers flowing in. Porsea Photo 19: Some residents of Porsea use the Asahan River as their only source of water for all household needs. While 44% of the people in town use a septic tank, the remaining households discharge wastes into drainages and canals leading directly to the river. Photo 23: Teamwork was required to pull the water hyacinth plants out by their roots and then carry them from the riverbank to the road where they could be transported to a disposal site.
