1 Burglary Security Devices Effectiveness Andromachi Tseloni, Rebecca Thompson & Louise Grove (Loughborough University) From 18 October 2013: European Society of Criminology Meetings 4 th -7 th September 2013
2 Research Question What is the preventive effect, if any, of individual and combined burglary security devices against domestic burglary with entry and attempted burglary?

15 Conclusions Increase in the use and number of and improvements in the availability of security devices coincided with the unprecedented burglary falls. Individual and combined security devices prevent burglaries with entry more than attempts. Individual security devices reduce burglaries up to a third. BUT The existence of burglar alarm on its own is counterproductive. Combinations of security devices in general afford up to 50 times more protection than no security. The effects are greater for 2008/ /12 than 2005/ /08 when the burglary drop smoothed.
