3 Health and Safety Principles All injuries and occupational illnesses are preventable Preventing accidents and ill health is everyone s responsibility Everyone is accountable for their own, their team s and their business s Health & Safety performance All accidents and near misses must be reported; a near miss is free lesson No job is so important that you can t take time to think carefully about doing it safely Unsafe conditions and unsafe acts will be corrected promptly Health and safety is a condition of employment Standards, procedures and rules are there to prevent accidents; everyone must follow them Safety goes home with everyone 3

4 Reporting Accidents / Incidents / Near Misses Dialling hotline is the agreed preferred format for Vennsys staff to record, manage and report on all accidents, near misses and environmental incidents in real time The Veolia Water admin team manage the hotline and they will raise a case which is automatically distributed via to the relevant distribution list The appropriate line manager will review the incident and it is their responsibility to close the event off 4

5 Duties of Employers Employers responsibilities Ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees Provide safe access and egress Provide information, training, instruction and supervision Safe place of work, safe plant and equipment Arrangements for ensuring the safe handling, use, storage and transport of articles and substances 5

6 Duties of Employees Employees responsibilities Duty to take care of own health and safety and that of others Duty to report anything unsafe Duty to cooperate with employer with regards to health and safety arrangements 6

7 The Basics for Everyone for All Tasks Before you start any task - Have the risks been assessed and is there a safe system of work? Do you have the correct training? Do you have the right tools and equipment and are they in good condition? Do you have the correct PPE? Do you know what to do in an emergency While working on a task, if something in the work environment changes - Stop what you are doing and reassess the risks involved If you cannot comply with any point set out in this presentation - Stop what you are doing and tell your supervisor or manager 7

8 Near Misses A Near Miss is An unplanned event that could have resulted in harm to either a person, property or to the environment, but did not, either by chance or timely intervention Important to learn from Free Lessons Critical step to Zero Harm interdependent safety culture Near miss reporting reduces accidents 8

14 Slips, trips and falls Most slips and trips are preventable and many happen when spills aren't cleared up or clutter tidied away Last year, there were four fatalities and more than employees seriously injured when they had a slip or trip at work Slips and trips cost the economy around 800 million per year Simple mistakes can shatter lives your actions could help stop them from happening Don't take things for granted, cut corners or wait for someone else to do it. Clear up! 14

15 Preventing slips, trips and falls Clean up all spillages in the office Ensure any damaged floors are covered and reported Re-route or re-site trailing electrical leads or suitably cover Clear up waste Do not leave tools and equipment lying about. Ensure lighting levels are sufficient and kept that way Don t obstruct walkways Keep stairways free of obstruction Don t carry things in such a way as you can t see where you are going 15

17 Electrical Hazards Electricity can cause accidents, damage and can lead to fires from - Poor installation of equipment Avoid electrical overload / shocks/ fires by - Placing cups away from electrical equipment Disconnecting electrical equipment when not in use Avoid hanging clothing over electrical equipment Rubbish accumulating close to electrical equipment 17

18 Electrical Hazards Conduct pre-use visual checks on all electrical equipment before each use - Ensure that the appliance has received Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) i.e. a sticker or tag is evident and in date If fault is found DO NOT use, quarantine or remove the equipment until it is repaired or replaced DO NOT overload electrical sockets 18

19 Storage Areas Keep Fire Exits clear from obstacles Items / Objects are to stored correctly and safely All items are stored securely The storage areas are well lit Location of storage areas No smoking Emergencies Access 19

20 Fire Prevention Don t hang clothing over open element heating sources Don t allow rubbish to accumulate Only use proper containers for flammable liquids and materials Don t overload electric sockets Switch off electrical equipment if not in use Clean up any spills of flammable liquids Fit and test Smoke detectors 20

21 Fire Precautions Know what to do in the event of fire Keep doorways and exit routes clear Don t obstruct fire extinguishers Know the types, where they are situated and how to use fire extinguishers Actions to take in the event of fire Raise the alarm then call Fire Service Evacuate Only fight the fire if it is safe to do so 21

22 Fire Safety All extinguishers are coloured RED, with identifying colours forming either part of the labels or as a band around the tops of the extinguishers The main types of extinguishers are: Wet Chemical, Foam, Water, Powder and CO2 22

23 Discovering a Fire If you discover a fire, raise the Alarm at once by breaking the glass of the nearest Manual Alarm Call Point(Red Square Box) Never tackle a fire unless you have been trained to use a fire extinguisher and you feel completely safe to do so Always ensure your exit is clear and behind you Evacuate the building as described in the Fire Emergency Procedure Be prepared to convey whatever information you have concerning the fire to whoever is in charge 23

24 Fire Procedure On hearing the fire alarm you should immediately stop work and make your way quickly and calmly to the nearest safe exit. These are indicated by the Green signs Do not stop to collect personal belongings If you suspect that there is a fire on the other side of a door, DO NOTopen it As you leave the building, ensure all fire doors on your route are closed Go straight to your assembly point. Do not re-enter building unless someone in authority has said it is safe to do so 24

25 Hazardous Substances Always read any labels and/or other information (COSHH assessment) associated with the substance and material and follow guidance given Don t mix chemicals or substances that are not intended to be mixed-if you don t know don t Know the first aid measures Keep secure and,where possible out of reach Use only purpose made containers Don t eat drink or smoke when handling Always wash appropriately after handling and definitely before handling/eating food Dispose of in accordance with manufacturer instruction Always wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment 25

26 Safe Driving Make sure- You are familiar with all controls That driving position is comfortable Don t attempt adjustment when driving You aren t distracted when driving, Don t use mobile phones You are taxed insured, and properly licensed You always drive within the confines of the - law, vehicle, weather, time of day, road type You don t drive under the influence of drink or drugs even if prescribed Spending a little time checking your vehicle will make your journey safer 26

27 First Aid Basic first aid procedures can save a life, or reduce the consequences of an injury. However if you are unsure of your capabilities seek help. If you are trained in first aid you administer appropriate first aid as required If you get any chemicals or dusts in your eyes Rinse Immediately with clean sterile water found in the Emergency Eyewash Bottles If you have an accident whilst at work and the injury is major assistance will be requested from the Ambulance Service Remember to report the accident 27

28 Smoking Vennsys complies with the The Smoke-free (Premises and Enforcement) Regulations 2006 and operates a No Smoking Policy on all of our sites, work vehicles and our customer s premises If you are a smoker there may be a designated location for you to go to. It is left to your discretion to find out 28

29 Drugs and Alcohol Policy Individuals impaired by alcohol or the use of illegal substances put the safety of themselves and other employees at risk Anyone found to be under the influence of illegal substances or alcohol and considered to be a risk to him/herself or others, shall be removed from their work location immediately 29

30 Environment Switch off electrical equipment when not in use, especially over night Turns off lights when rooms are not being used Don't leave litter and waste about dispose of it properly Close external doors to retain heat Turn down thermostats to reduce fuel needed Recycle paper, cardboard, plastics etc 30

31 Waste Disposal All Wastes are to be disposed of in the correct Skips / Bins when taken back to the yard or base depot Remember a successful business shouldn't cost the Earth! 31
