1 TASK: FIRE EXTINGUISHER ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. 1. Location The Scope of Works and Description of Task Description of Task Access & Egress to & from Work Area Safety Hazard Identification The Task (Step by Step) Risk Assessment. 5. Method Statement submitted by Kings Fire Ltd 1. LOCATION. Various 2. THE SCOPE OF WORK S AND DESCRIPTION OF TASK THE SCOPE OF WORKS. The routine inspection and testing of the Fire Extinguishers. 3. DESCR IPTION OF TASK AREAS AFFECTED. Areas affected by these Works: To be completed Site to be informed of the program / progress of works any health and safety precautions to be implemented (whilst on site) Other Attendants Required. None Entry permits required. Identity badges to be worn whilst on site Training required. All Extinguisher Technicians are to be certificated by FIA as per British Standards. 4. ACCESS & EGRESS TO & FROM WORK AREA Access and egress to and from the areas identified on the program of works Protection required for access and egress. Items which may damage property will be adequately packaged to ensure damage may not occur. Kings Fire Ltd Issue 1 June of 8
2 Personal Protective Equipment. Overalls. Safety Boots / Shoes. Goggles. 5. SAFETY HAZ A R D IDENTIFICATION. Check permits to work in area (see section 3.1). Foreseen Hazards: I) Manual handling: - Strain & sprains, trapped fingers, lacerations, broken bones, hand, feet. II) Injuries sustained through using hand tools. III) Stepping on or striking against objects. IV) Injuries caused by transport vehicles TOOL BOX TALK. Tool box talks on the following: I) Asbestos. II) Steps/Ladders. III) Manual Handling 5.2. REDUNDANT EXTINGUISHERS NOISE. Redundant extinguisher will be removed from site on completion of the maintenance activity. Noise will be kept to a minimum but may be generated whilst working SPILLAGE. Where spillage takes place when transporting rubbish from one area to another, this will be cleaned up. If spillage takes place when inspecting or re-filling an extinguisher this will be cleared up and the site made aware of the spillage PROTECTION REQUIRED TO CLIENT S EQUIPMENT AND STAFF. Where possible work will be carried out so that there will be no risk to clients property. Where work is undertaken and client site staff could potentially move through the work area a sign is to prominently placed warning of the potential danger to anyone who enters the area TEMPORARY LIGHTING. 3 5.11. PPE REGISTER Operation Re-filling 6. THE TASK (STEP BY STEP) PRE-REQUIREMENTS. Protection Eyes - Goggles. Breathing - Masks. Hand Protection - Not applicable. General Protection - Overall, Safety Boots/Shoes. 1. Personnel must report their attendance to the customer on arrival at the site and must report again when leaving. 2. Personnel must park their vehicles legally and follow any traffic regulations or rules which may apply. 3. Personnel must acquaint themselves with health and safety policy for the site. 4. Personnel must acquaint themselves with safety procedures relative to any potential hazards which may exist on the site and must adhere strictly to those procedures. 5. Personnel must acquaint themselves with the contents of any statutory notice and observe the conditions thereby imposed. 6. Personnel must work within a Permit to Work system for the site, if appropriate. 7. Personnel must wear appropriate personal protective equipment when required. 8. Personnel must observe safety signs and must acquaint themselves with first aid facilities on site. 9. Personnel must acquaint themselves with fire evacuation procedures. 10. Personnel must not interfere with, misuse or fail to use correctly, any equipment, appliance or sign which secures the health, safety or welfare of people on site. 11. Personnel must not willfully do anything which may endanger themselves or others whilst on site. 12. Personnel must contact the site safety officer if concerned about safety on site. 13. If still concerned after contacting the site safety officer the matter should be referred to his organization. 14. Personnel must report accidents to their organisation and to the site safety officer, whether or not persons are injured. 15 Ensure COSHH assessments are in place and required precautions have been taken 6.2. SERVICING OF FIRE EXTINGUISHER Kings Fire Ltd maintains and services portable fire extinguishers in accordance with the manufacturer s service and maintenance instructions to a standard not less than that recommended in BS5306:3:2017 annex D E & F. Where manufacturer s information is not available, guidance is sought in The Guide to the Servicing of Portable Fire Extinguishers (as published by Fire Industry Association) or from some other BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) registered companies. 1) Locate equipment on site. 2) Methodically move around the extinguishers in the premises servicing each extinguisher as defined in BS5306:3:2017 Annex D. 3) Where equipment is found to be un safe and is condemned it shall be made safe and marked CONDEMNED. 4) Where equipment cannot be maintained due to lack of spare parts it shall be made safe and marked Corrective Action Required with a label attached to the Extinguisher. 4 5) On completion of the service activity a written report must be provided detailing: i. Those extinguishers that have been condemned, not maintained or are missing ii. Those extinguishers required to replace those reported in 5i above iii. Those extinguishers required to ensure that the level of cover in the premises is sufficient and in accordance with BS5306:8:2012 iv. The responsible persons obligations under the current fire legislation 6) Certificate of inspection to be issued 7) Site Fire Log book to be updated and signed. Kings Fire Ltd Issue 1 June of 8

Review of locations on a case by case basis to look for any additional risks. 4 Lone Working; Although operatives work away from the office they are working on client premises and as such are not alone. If they work in an unoccupied premise or they work out of normal hours they phone and leave a message with the office answer machine when they start the work and again when they finish the work. 5 Assault; There is potential for staff to be assaulted, if we work in areas where the risk is higher than normal i.e. secure institution, staff will either work together or be accompanied by a member of the client organisation. If these arrangements are not adhered to the maintenance activity will not be undertaken. 6 Noise; No significant level of noise is created by the work activity, only noise issue will be dependent upon the particular premises and the activity being undertaken there, all Extinguisher Technicians carry ear defenders to reduce the risk of damage to hearing. 7 7 Manual Handling; Manual handling can become an issue as 9kg powder extinguisher can weigh up 18kg. The Job does not require heavy weight to be lifted, no twisting, lifting, pushing or pulling, repetitive handling. If Extinguishers are to be moved any distance trolleys would be used. No imposed work rate. All staff have regular toolbox talks on the subject. 8 Coshh assessment available for chemical used by our staff 9 If no asbestos register exists or the ACM s are not clearly marked work on site will not go ahead.
