1 Getting Started with the AD2USB device Posted by mathewss /11/10 17:21 First off Congratulations on getting your new toy. You need the USB drivers if you are windows. Your computer probably has them installed already if you have ever used a usb2serial devices as 99% of them use an FTDI chip like I do. Install version or later Connect the 12v GND DI and DO lines to the devices. The device gets power from the alarm to operate. Connect the devices to a PC. You should see it install some new hardware or give some indication that a new devices was installed. It will be a com port. You can see this com port under your device manager on windows. First try to use the device directly with a terminal program. The program I have used for years and trust is putty. If you have XP you an use Hyperterm. Pick the com port that was added say COM3 using any baud or other settings as you want they are not even looked at anyway. If your device ends up at a com port about 4 say COM10 you will need to go into the device manager and move this down to a lower number or Perl wont be able to use it. You should now see some text spewed at you. If you now press '*' your panel should respond as if you hit the same key On your alarm panel. The sample code and programs are at our site. They require perl. Activestate is the one I use also strawberry perl I hear is good. All documentation and samples are available in the forums at Videos * Attaching the AD2USB to your panel * Connecting the AD2USB to your Windows Computer * Connecting the AD2USB to your MAC OSX I also now have available to purchase an alarm panel unlocker program. This program when used with this device will determine the master installer code and any other codes on the alarm panel. Keep me posted on your testing etc. I try to respond to s in the same day I get them. athews Nu Tech

2 Posted by rbergquist /04/01 15:32 I recently installed AD2USB on a Vista 50P connecting with a Win7 (x64) Ultimate PC. I suggest the following additions to your instructions - highlighted in red You will need to configure the alarm system with the address of the AD2USB as a new keypad device. For example, the default keypad address for an Vista 15P is 16. The AD2USB comes configured as device 18. If your alarm system does not have a spare Security Panel configured, you will have configure one. In this case, you can 1) call your security monitoring company and ask them to add in a new panel - (ask them what address they configured it to); or 2) if you know the Installer Code, you can program it in yourself. You should reference the Programming Guide and Installation and Setup Guide for your unit. (I found these at ) Installation is done with the #93 prompted menu mode and the Device Programming section. (My installer had nicely written the installed zones and device numbers on the inside of the security panel door so I just picked the next Device Address; Device Type = Alpha Keyboard, since I have a multiple partition system, I set it to a "Master Keyboard" partition 0, and set set my Sound option as to 00 to hear all beeps).) On your PC, you need the USB drivers if you are running Windows. Your computer may have them installed already if you have ever used a usb2serial devices as 99% of them use an FTDI chip. Access and Install version or later. Connect the 12v GND DI and DO lines to the devices. At this point, you can set the device address of the AD2USB to match the device address you configured in the ADEMCO VISTA system. To do this just press! in your terminal and enter the new address. You can leave the panel code blank or 0's as this is currently not used. If you now press '*' your panel should respond as if you hit the same key on your alarm panel. If it appears to take a long time for the send... operation, this probably means that the Security Panel is not recognizing the AD2USB - check that it configured in the VISTA system and the AD2USB has been set with the matching device number. The sample code and programs are at our site. They require perl. Activestate is the one I use also strawberry perl I hear

3 is good. Note for Windows (x64) - I had problems installing the x64 bit versions of Pearl -- the 32-bit versions worked fine. All documentation and samples are available in the forums at Posted by gtennys /09/26 18:19 Is it the case that the ad2usb with serial adapter must be initialized via the usb port, before data can be sent to the panel? This appeared to be the case for my ad2usb. I could receive data, but I couldn't send. I could see the data with a scope on the receive line, but no data on the transmit line until I connected via USB. Posted by robertjerry /12/15 21:13 I have just started using it and its working quite well for me but is little complicated to understand. Posted by berkinet /12/15 21:50 robertjerry wrote: I have just started using it and its working quite well for me but is little complicated to understand. Welcome to the ad2usb club. Please free to ask any questions you may have to get your ad2usb up and running. Posted by connornu /12/16 10:57 I posted this to support. I was wondering if anyone on these forum had any insight... I've got a ademco alarm panel model k10145x10 (vista 20p) and i'm trying to do the correct wiring to a ad2usb. The panel is in my kitchen and it gets power from a plugin power supply that is wired from the basement mechanical room. The power supply feeds power up to the panel with a red and black wire only. These go to wiring positions 15,16 on the panel. The alarm panel is also wired to the same basement with an additional phone line wires (blue, red, black and yellow wires in positions 2,3,4,5) which aren't being used. (see attached image) I'm not sure under this configuration how I supply power to the panel (in the kitchen) AND the ad2usb device (in the basement). The ad2usb device needs to be in the basement next to the alarm panel power supply as I want to connect the ad2usb via usb to a micasaverde vera controller. At the alarm panel can i connect two black wires and two red wires together at the panel so that I can power the panel AND the ad2usb from the same power supply? The panel doesn't seem to have a an additoinal power out for me to provide power in from the power supply in the basement then a separate power connection out from the panel to the AD2USB. So on the panel in position I have wires in position 2,3,4,5 (phone line in blue, red, black, yellow) and wires in position 15, 16 (power supply red, black) can I take wires that are in 2,3,4,5 and place them in positions 13,14,15,16 which would be (data in, data out, power, power) positions 15 and 16 would then have two black and two red wires in them

4 Any advice on wiring under this configuation would be appreciated. Thank you Posted by mathewss /12/16 14:01 None of that sounds right :( A vista 20 would never have power tied to position 15. The picture you sent is too small to see what it is. A k10145x10 is an AC transformer normally connect to the alarm panel on pins 4 and 5 but maybe its an X10 version and also connects to 6 and 7. Use extreme caution with the AC voltages they will damage stuff. Send better pictures of the whole panel board. The AD2USB should be connected to the panel the same way a keypad is connected using the keypad bus pins 4,5,6,7 Pin 1 & 2 is AC so use caution it should never connect to anything but a transformer. If you google for Ademco Vista 15/20p install manual. You will find that at the end of the book it has a schematic of the board and what every terminal does. Posted by connornu /12/16 14:57 Yes, Doesn't sound right at all. That is because i think i have an incompatible self contained alarm unit. I have an ademco LynxR self contained unit and system that is wired down to the mechanical room. I've attached another image. I assume it isn't compatible and I need a vista series from Ademco. Thanks! Posted by YR1-2011/12/26 17:32 I have installed the ad2usb device. wired it to a vista20p alarm panel on pins I have connected it to a vera2 controller from Mi Casa Verde. The alarm installer set system to recognize ad2usb as a 2nd keypad at address 17 ( my keypad is on 16.) I am not able to set or disarm the system through vera2 but I do see the system. Vera2 control panel shows its state as ready or armed (properly) and sends me notifications when the system is armed or disarmed (but I am not able to set or disarm the system through

5 vera2.) I would like to verify that the hardware is set correctly. How do I check what the device address is set to on the alarm panel. The instructions for the ad2usb say that it is set by default as address 18 how can I check that it was changed to 17. How can I check what address the AD2USB is actually set as ( or is this set during the install from the keypad) I would like it to be set to 17. I have the installer code so I can get into the system but have no idea what to enter to see what on the keypad. Posted by mathewss /12/26 20:35 At the top of this thread is a download for the "Visual Quick Start Guide" It should help get you running. Your AD2USB is defaulted to address 18 and your alarm panel programming to enable address 18 is still required by you. The quickstart will help you on what is needed. Posted by YR1-2011/12/26 21:37 I don't understand your comment that the ad2usb needs to be at address 18 ( 192 ) Is the preset address of the ad2usb the same address that needs to beset on the alarm panel. The quick start guide in section 5 says that the next open address in the example panel is 23 (196). How does the panel know that the ad2usb which is preset to address 18 is assigned to 196 address 23 when 196 is made active (value=10)?

6 I seem to have 192 = 00,00 and 191 =01,00 I have only one physical keypad at 190 the ad2usb is the only other keypad on the system so is this programed correctly? Appreciate your help. I think you have a simple fundamental confusion regarding a devices address and the "field" in the programming menus to enable the address. The AD2USB unless configured to do so will see all messages for any keypad address regardless of the address assigned the AD2USB in effect it runs in "promiscuous mode". The AD2USB is by default set to address 18 but can be set to any address by connecting to the device with a terminal program such as PUTTY and sending! to enter configuration mode for the AD2USB. Some addresses have special meanings such as address 31 where the keypad runs in a different mode for older vista 10/20SE panels in what is known as non address mode. The AD2USB will only be able to send messages to the alarm panel if the panel is told a keypad exists. To enable a Vista 15/20P alarm panel to listen for a keypad with the address of 18 you would enter programming mode on your panel and enter 11 in field 191. This will enable keypad address 18 on the bus and assign that to partition #1 that will be sent BEEP's. So programming fields are just registers. On more advanced Vista panels such as the Vista 50PUL the field to enable a keypad is completely different so check your panels programming guide for your specific panel. Hope this was helpful. Posted by YR1-2011/12/26 22:36 One more question How do I exit program mode on the keypad? Thanks

Same error messages. The strange thing is that I could do a installer login via the virtual keypad. I have a wired keypad 6460 on address 16 and a wireless keypad 5839 on address 17. Without the ad2usb it works fine. I have add ad2usb with COMPASS with the following settings: Device Type = Console Parameter 1 Type = HomePartition Parameter 1 = 1 Parameter 2 Type = 2 Parameter 2 = Disabled Has anyone an idea or tips what went wrong. Thanks a lot for the help Best regards J What else is connected to your panel? Is it possible some other device is using that address already? Please confirm what fields are used on this panel in programming mode to enable keypad address 18. You say you connect via compass are you using a modem to connect? Posted by messi /01/11 00:36 There is definitly no other device on address 18 or 19. Yes I use the Ademco CIA 2400 modem and Compass to do the setup. The following addresses are occupied: adress 00 the wireless repeater. address 12/13 two relays module. address 16 wired keypad address 17 wireless keypad According to the programming manual: *190/*191 Compass did the correct programming. Is there a restriction of 2 keypads per partition? Because I use only partition 1 in my system. I can remember when I tried to hook up a third keypad (wireless)that I encounter similar problem. I had to removed it from the system.

I have looked at this several times and I can not think of any reason why this would be happening. Not enough information about your system but in general yes you can have many keypads attached to your system or many ad2usb devices. Just make sure you avoid address conflicts. Posted by hoosh /04/02 09:34 I have a Vista-15cn panel, is ad2usb compatible with it? If yes, I assume I could connect ad2usb to the same wiring terminals (4,5,6,7) that the existing physical keypad is connected to? I tried to search the forum but couldn't find any info. Thanks! I have the same panel(which your FAQ page says is NOT compatible, Ademco Lynxr-I) Is that ONLY because of the power supply? Ie: if I supply correct power..(i need to know if it's ac or dc). Can't I still connect the ad2usb to the di and do terminals on my panel and get this to work? Thanks for your help with this question

The first generation boards would operate at any baud rate as they used the FT245 Chip. The Last few generations I switched to an FT232 chip that has a fixed baud rate. Try N 1. You can force this via screens but I dont recall the exact syntax. Posted by mathewss /08/07 18:51 Missed this one. Probably answered in a private post but I will post the reply here too. its approx 12V DC. AC would blow it up. The panel has an AC supply but converts it to DC for all attached modules keypads etc. The panel you are referring to does not support any added modules or keypads that is why the AD2USB wont work. It has no place to plug in to the panel. Posted by hamw /08/07 20:19 Thanks; I'll look at it tomorrow. If you recall how to set the baud rate, that'd be great. Something like this should work... /usr/local/bin/ser2sock -p s/dev/tty???? -b d -c -w 5000 Then, just telnet to whatever port you defined in the -p setting telnet Once you are connected, you will probably want to issue the mode character command. 14 Posted by mathewss /08/08 19:06 Hmmm. that does not seem right. Its as if it did not see any of the arguments. It did not even daemonize or it would not have output "Setting speed" line. berkinet this maybe a compile problem on the mac? Posted by berkinet /08/09 01:26 Try these suggestions in order. I suspect #1 is the problem. Since the program is actually starting, I do not really think #s 2 or 3 are the problem. 1) It does not look like ser2sock is seeing the speed or demonize flags. Are you entering the ser2sock command /usr/local/bin/ser2sock -p s/dev/tty.usbserial-a1018ww3 -b d -c -w 5000 all on one line with no space between the "-" and the following option. I.e. -b115200? 2) Are you sure you are running the 64 bit version from the distribution? I have placed a copy on dropbox. 3) Are you sure the file permissions are right? From a terminal window run: ls -l /usr/local/bin/ser2sock and post the output back here. When everything is working you should see something like this when you start ser2sock: $ /usr/local/bin/ser2sock -p s/dev/tty.usbserial-a1018ww3 -b d -c -w 5000 Aug 9 10:23:40 Casa-Milaro-Library.local ser2sock : Serial 2 Socket lay version V1.3 starting Aug 9 10:23:40 Casa-Milaro-Library.local ser2sock : Listening socket created on port Aug 9 10:23:40 Casa-Milaro-Library.local ser2sock : daemonizing the process You will then return to the terminal prompt (macmini:~ WilliamsEC$). At that point you would telnet to your localhost port Posted by hamw /08/09 16:03 We're back in business! Here's the output from /usr/local/bin/ser2sock -p s/dev/tty.usbserial-a1018ww3 -b d -c -w 5000: macmini:~ WilliamsEC$ /usr/local/bin/ser2sock -p s/dev/tty.usbserial-a1018ww3 -b d -c -w 5000 Aug 9 18:25:57 macmini.local ser2sock : Serial 2 Socket lay version V1.3 starting Aug 9 18:25:57 macmini.local ser2sock : Listening socket created on port Aug 9 18:25:57 macmini.local ser2sock : daemonizing the process Here's the output from ls -l /usr/local/bin/ser2sock: macmini:~ WilliamsEC$ ls -l /usr/local/bin/ser2sock -rwxr-xr-x@ 1 WilliamsEC staff Dec /usr/local/bin/ser2sock And all the keypads are now working as well as the Indigo AD2USB plugin. No more "open ckt."

15 Thanks Sean and Berkinet! Posted by hamw /08/09 17:20 Spoke too soon. I restarted the computer and unfortunately the baud fix did not stick. I reran the command line and it all began working again. I've tried this a couple of times with the same result. Of note, I had what I believe is the correct ser2sock version but replaced it with the dropbox version anyway. How do we get it to stick at ? Posted by berkinet /08/09 23:28 hamw wrote:...how do we get it to stick at ? The question is: How are you starting ser2sock? Wherever it is that you have created a means of starting ser2sock, you also need to include all of the options. Posted by hamw /08/10 07:32 All done. BTW, I realize I may have hijacked this thread -- maybe it is its own topic. Thanks again for the help.
