Due to the emergency back up for the fan control the 4500 will NOT support Heat Pumps. The installation instruction states that it will. This is a misprint. 2. It is made to be mounted next to the existing thermostat. 3. Make sure you disconnect power to your HVAC unit before disconnecting power to the thermostat. 4. While installation of the 4500 is possible without the services of a HVAC contractor, some installers will prefer to have an HVAC contractor connect the 4500 to the HVAC system and test its operation. This is recommended if you do not have HVAC experience. In cases where you prefer to do the entire installation, it is suggested that the HVAC contractor be contacted for information on the type of heating system and the amount of "span" (i.e. temperature swing) that should be set with the 4286 phone module. 5. For more wiring notes see the installation instructions. Figure 8: 4500 Terminal Layouts Figure 9: Standard HVAC Wiring Figure 10: Wiring to the 4286 Programming: 1. See Programming location 1-15 in figure 7 for programming details. 2. Setting the dip switches on your 4500 thermostat(s)

Figure 11: Addressing the 4500 Basic operations are: is used to operate the HVAC system with the alarm panel is armed in the AWAY or MAXIMUM mode. Premises Thermostat should be set above (in heat mode) or below (in cool mode) the 4500 Set-back setting. (Check your panel and make sure the Auto-Stay feature is not enabled.) 2. The 4500 does NOT adjust the temperature. It has a Thermistor built on it that detects the temperature of the room. When it determines that the temperature is above or below the set back it opens up the relay to prevent voltage feed to HVAC system preventing it from coming on at existing thermostat setting, it then uses 4500 settings. When temperature reaches Set-back setting Relay will close to allow the on premise thermostat to control the HVAC system to maintain the Set-back temperature. Notes: 1. The 4500 is only activated in the Away or Maximum modes 2. See troubleshooting if device is not functioning properly - 8 -

Example of using the 4500 in Cool mode: Local Premises Thermostat is set to 70 degrees. Set-back temperature is set to 80 degrees. Once the system is armed away and the temperature in the house is 70 degrees the 4500 relay will open (terminals 4 and 7 will read the open) to disconnect the local premises thermostat from the HVAC. Once the house temperature reaches 80+ degrees (setback temperature) it will close the relay to connect the local premises thermostat back to the HVAC. This will allow the HVAC to cool the house back to 80- degrees. (+/- Degrees depends on the swinger that was set) NOTE: It may take at least 5 minutes for the air conditioner to turn on from the time it turns off. This feature is present in the 4500 to protect the air conditioner compressor from excessive cycling. Example of using the 4500 in Heat mode: Local Premises Thermostat is set to 70 degrees. Set-back temperature is set to 60 degrees. Once the system is armed away and the temperature in the house is 70 degrees the 4500 relay will open (terminals 8 and 3 will read the open) to disconnect the the local premises thermostat from the HVAC. Once the house temperature reaches 60- degrees (set-back temperature) it will close the relay to connect the local premises thermostat back to the HVAC. This will allow the HVAC to heat the house back to 60+ degrees. (+/- Degrees depends on the swinger that was set) Setting the 4500 Thermostat: To enter and use the 4286 thermostat programming mode: 1. There must be at least one thermostat programmed into the system by way of the 4286 installer programming mode entry. 2. Obtain phone access from the phone module. Enter the 2-digit phone code. Enter the 4-digit system code if prompted. 3. Press # 99 on the phone keypad after the complete status announcement. 4. The 4286 will announce: Thermostat Mode. The temperature setting for thermostat #1 will follow. You can change its set point using menu selection 1 below. If thermostat #1 is in BYPASS or CHECK, that status will be announced instead of the set point. The 4286 will also announce whether set-back has been turned off by the user. Menu Selections: To change temperature, enter 1. This selection is used to set the armed away set-back temperature for thermostats #1 or #2 (This menu selection will NOT be announced if the thermostat is in CHECK or BYPASSED ) To allow the user to change the ARMED AWAY set-back temperature settings, the 4286 will announce the present setting in effect, and wait for a new 2-digit temperature setting to be entered. If the current temperature setting is acceptable to the user, the user may press the * key to advance without changing the setting. If the number entered is outside the allowed range (45 to 99 F., 07 to 37 C), a buzzer will sound from the phone, and the temperature setting repeated. This will continue until the number entered is within the allowable range. If the 4500 thermostat is BYPASSED, the user must switch the ACTIVE/BYPASS slide switch on the 4500 thermostat front panel to the ACTIVE position, which will then allow access through the 4286 thermostat menus. For set-back on/off, enter 3. Turning off set-back will result in it remaining disabled while armed away, until the next time the system is disarmed. This feature allows the user to turn off the set-back before returning home, so that the premises will have time to return to a comfortable at-home temperature. It also allows the user to turn off set-back before leaving home, when they plan to be away only a short time. The user can also turn the setback on again with this menu selection if they have a change of plans. To log on, enter 2. (This selection is announced if more than one thermostat has been programmed into the system). It allows the user to select thermostat #1 or #2 for setting. The user can set the 4500 thermostat just selected with the to change temperature, enter 1 menu selection. To exit, enter 0. (This selection exits the thermostat mode)

Notes: If a 4500 thermostat does not respond to the 4286 phone module for 2 minutes, the phone module will announce, Check thermostat (1/2). (Descriptor), instead of the temperature. If the temperature falls below 37 F (3 C), the 4286 phone module will announce, Check thermostat (1/2). (Descriptor), instead of the temperature. See Trouble Shooting Below. Troubleshooting the 4500 Following the procedures in the 4286 Installation Instructions manual should result in a minimum number of system problems. If you experience problems that relate to the use of the 4500 thermostat(s), first check the possible resolution of some typical thermostat problems that follow. Thermostat is in check (4286 announces Check Thermostat, or the yellow light is flashing on the 4500): 1. Check that the DIP switch on each thermostat is properly set, and that the 4500 thermostat addresses have been properly programmed in the 4286 programming mode. See figure 11 above 2. Check the connections from the 4286 to the 4500, and make sure that the cable connecting the 4500s to the 4286 faces the correct direction (yellow toward the corner of the 4286 board). Heat is cycling on and off too often. 1. Increase the amount of span as described in the section Programming the 4286 to add 4500 thermostats in Section 4 of this manual. 2. Make sure that the location where the 4500 is mounted is free of drafts. Temperature in the room swings too widely when the 4500 is set to ACTIVE mode. 1. Decrease the amount of span as described in the section Programming the 4286 to add 4500 thermostats in Section 4 of the manual. Also see figure 7 above for programming locations. Troubleshooting the 4286: Problem: When I enter the phone code on premise the operator comes on or I get a busy signal. Answer: This means the Voice Module does not hear the code entered. This can be caused by too many things, so narrow the problem down by attempting to call it from off premise. How far do you get from off premise? 1. Panel answers, gives download tone but 4286 does not come on. Problem is caused by Reason 3 or 5. (See Next Page) 2. Panel answers, gives download tone; voice module comes on but does not accept code. Problem caused by Reason 1 or 4. (See Next Page) 3. Panel answers, gives download, voice module comes on and accepts code from off premise. Site problem is caused by Reason 2 or 4 (See Next Page) 4. Check for Line seizure Problem: Check 104 (10/15/20p series controls) or check 804 (32/128/250 series controls), also will complain the voice module does not work. Answer: This means the panel does not see the 4286, so of course it does not work. 1. This can only be caused by Reason 3 or 5. (See Next Page) Problem: Call into System Off, when the customer tries to remote access. Answer: This means the 4286 is not configured for remote access. 1. To toggle on or off enter Code #91 on the keypad. Keypad beeps twice means it is on Keypad beeps once means it is off

The Reasons: 1. The Voice module code is not correct. Check programming. 2. The command is not being entered from the house side. Confirm he is entering the code on the house side of the phone by having him try it from a telephone test set on terminal 3 and 4 of the voice module. If it still does not work then take all wires off 3 and 4. Still not working confirm that phone line supervision is set up correctly 3. The 4286 does not have power or data connection to panel. Check the wiring of the 4286 on the ECP terminals of the panel. Make sure the harness is plugged into the proper plug on the 4286, and not the plug intended for the 4500, make sure it is plugged in with yellow towards the center of the board. Meter for voltage or data at the harness and on the pins when pulled back a little. Take everything else off the ECP buss and test again to confirm there is not a current overload or address conflict. 4. Tones generated by phone are not long enough or not correct. Hold the keys down longer or try a different phone or program and try a different code. 5. The Voice Module is not enabled in programming. Notes: If you have followed the suggestions above, and you can not find the cause of a 4286 not working properly, you should also check for ECP address conflicts and excessive current draw. Both of these can cause unpredictable results. Try removing everything off the keypad terminals except the 4286 and test again
