PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS For the safety of personnel and equipment, it is essential to read all of these instructions before using the device for the first time. Confirm the following points upon receipt of the package containing the pulse concentrator: the packaging is in good condition, the product is in good condition, the device part number matches that specified on your order, the contents of the package: - 1 product, - 1 resistance for line impedance 120 Ohms, - 1 mini CD, - 1 quick start instructions Ref.: N292554/00 3

4 PRESENTATION The device is a pulse concentrator equipped with 7 digital inputs (logic or pulse signal) and an RS485 connection to the MODBUS protocol to communicate all datas to a PC or a webserver. It centralises and memorises pulses or logical signals in the output of electrical, gas, heating oil, water and compressed air meters or measurement units in order to: send them via the RS485 communication output to a remote energy management system, display a large number of these items on its local display screen for direct reading of information, generate event alarms (1 dedicated relay output). The pulse concentrator enables advanced customisation of all items, facilitating direct reading of information concentrated in this way: metering unit per input: kwh, m³ currency / input:, K,, $, logical inputs (NO/NC, delay) or pulses (weight, synchronisation source, time intervals for load graphs), logical output: configurable alarm, NO/NC and time delay. It is also possible to display, at any time: the physical status of each of the 7 digital inputs (contact open or closed, pulses present or not), the physical and functional status of the logical output (contact open or closed, output active or inactive), the status of 5 customisable events: date, activation time, duration, type (logical, threshold, or combination of 2 events), severity (4 information levels). The communication interface of pulse concentrator is 2-wire RS485 type using MODBUS protocol and enables: remote access to all information produced by pulse concentrator units, above and beyond that displayed on its screen (cf. application note or MODBUS table), this pulse concentrator to be operated from a PC or programmable logical controller (API/PLC). This product can be configured locally (PROG menu). The pulse concentrator has the following functionalities, with direct reading on the display and values saved to memory: total and partial metering in the chosen unit with currency equivalent, daily, weekly, monthly or annual metering, counting the last synchro trigger, metering on customised trigger (Perso), for each input, it memorises pulses by integrating them over a programmable interval (from 1 to 60 min in 1 min steps) to reconstitute a load graph. Whatever the chosen integration interval, the load graph is created over a sliding period of 17 days. All information is accessible through MODBUS. 5 MODBUS COMMUNICATION RS485 MEDIA In a standard configuration, one RS485 connection enables 32 UL* to be connected to a PC or PLC over 1200 metres using the MODBUS protocol. * 1 UL = one pulse concentrator. Recommendations: A BELDEN cable 9842 or equivalent characteristics cable must be used. Important: It is essential to connect a resistance of 120 Ohms to the 2 ends of the connection; this can be found in the product packaging. Other solutions are available (modem, fibre optic, etc.); please ask for details. GB MODBUS PROTOCOLE The MODBUS protocol operates on a master/slave structure: reading (function 3), writing (function 6 or 16), broadcast option at address 0. The communication method is RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) with hexadecimal characters comprising a minimum of 8 bits. MODBUS TABLE File available on the CD-ROM. APPLICATION The termination resistors RT (120Ω) must be inserted on the first and last device connected to the RS485 bus in the same terminals (+, -) which is connected the bus cable. 6 Installation The pulse concentrator can be mounted on a 35 mm rail (EN 60715TH35). It must be used inside electrical cabinets. 8 CONFIGURATION To enter configuration mode, press the PROG key for 3 sec. You are asked for a code: Normal user: code 1000 (default value, configurable number): all parameters can be modified EXCEPT those locked by the code Advanced user: code 6825 (not configurable): allows access to all parameters accessible with the code 1000, as well as sensitive "maintenance" parameters: Factory settings and Input Reset. After 1 min if a key is not pressed = automatic exit from programming mode. The configuration is not saved. To save and quit programming mode, press and hold PROG Ref.: N292554/00

14 RETRIEVING A LOAD CURVE USING COMMUNICATION This application note will give details of the procedure for retrieving a load curve for a pulsed input. Need A pulsed input (input 1 in this example) will give a total value in kwh. However, this value alone will not allow you to know which kwh were consumed in the "off-peak" or "peak" periods. In order to create a pricing breakdown, the load curve allows you to know exactly when consumption took place. It is also useful to be able to confirm if the maximum subscribed power from the electricity supplier has been exceeded. Pulse metering results, from an energy meter emitting a 100 ms pulse every 0.1 kwh. PROCEDURE - Cabling: NC Pulse output meter 1 120Ω BELDEN cable 9842 or equivalent characteristics cable. The load curve can only be retrieved through communication. In this example, we are going to use a 10 minute integration period because the electricity supplier invoices energy against 10 minute average powers. 15 RETRIEVING A LOAD CURVE USING COMMUNICATION Configuration Certain operations can be carried out in 2 ways, either by using buttons and the product screen, or by communication. In this procedure, we will detail the procedure using communication. - Configuration of retrieved pulse: Input 1 used as pulse counter. 16 RETRIEVING A LOAD CURVE USING COMMUNICATION Configuration - Changing the integration period: There are 2 levels: 1. Base integration period: this defines the recording period for load curves. Example: - 17 days with base period 1 minute, days with base period 10 minutes. 2. Integration period for each input: it must be a multiple of the base integration period. For example, if the base integration period is 10 minutes. Configuration examples: - Input 1: 10 minutes => possible, - Input 2: 20 minutes => possible, - Input 3: 15 minutes => not possible. For protection, a password is required to be able to change the configuration: - Using communication: write the password in a register. - Using the screen and buttons on the front of the product: enter the same password. The interrogation method must therefore be as follows: Read part of the load curve in a certain register range, then update these registers with the subsequent data, go and read the subsequent data in the same register range, and so on. For example, if the value is time-stamped at 1st January h00, the value will be: [11 years x 365 days + 3 (leap years 2000, 2004, 2008)] x 24h x 60 minutes x 60 seconds = Full/incomplete period: If the pulse concentrator is turned on throughout the integration of this value, the value will be 0, which would mean that this value is full. Value: This value is given in base unit. To really obtain metering in base unit (info retrieved in the "information type" register) for this integration period, the following operation by be carried out between the different registers: Real value = Value x Numerator / Denominator x Type information Ref.: N292554/00

21 HANDLING AN ALARM FOR METERING OVERRUN / EXPLAINING DIFFERENT ALARM TYPES This application note will give details about the procedure for generating an alarm as soon as weekly metering on the input exceeds 100 kwh. Need In the context of an energy optimisation project, the lighting systems in a workshop should not exceed 100 kwh per week if the lights are only switched on during working hours. An energy meter meters active energy consumed by the lighting circuit. The pulse output from this meter is connected to pulse input 1 of the pulse concentrator. 22 HANDLING AN ALARM FOR METERING OVERRUN / EXPLAINING DIFFERENT ALARM TYPES Configuration Warning: after one minute no key press = automatically exit mode configuration is not saved. Some operations can be carried out in 2 ways, either by using buttons and the product screen, or by communication. Different steps in configuration: - alarm declaration, - assign alarm to the output relay. - Alarm declaration: Alarm 1 Mode / Sever Alarm 1 Src / Type Mode: logical, analogue, combination or deactivated Logical alarm setting: source and type Alarm 1 Src1 / Src2 / Type Setting of combination alarm: source 1, source 2 and type Alarm 1 Src / Type / Hyst Setting of analogue alarm: source, type and hysteresis Alarm 1 Low / High Setting of analogue alarm: low or high limit Idem Alarm 2 > Alarm 5. Press the PROG button for 3s. Press the RIGHT ARROW button 3 times. Press PROG to unlock the programming menu (the configuration display is freely accessible, but changing it requires a password, default value 1000). Press the UP ARROW once to display 1000 and confirm with PROG: the config menu now appears released. Press PROG to select the alarm function. Press the DOWN ARROW 2x to select ANALOG. Accept using PROG, the choice of severity is automatically selected. Press the DOWN ARROW 2x to select WARNING (this severity is for information only, to manage different alarm levels). Accept using PROG. Press the DOWN ARROW to go to the 2nd config screen for alarm 1. Press PROG to select the parameter monitored by the alarm Ref.: N292554/00

23 HANDLING AN ALARM FOR METERING OVERRUN / EXPLAINING DIFFERENT ALARM TYPES - Alarm declaration (continued): Press the DOWN ARROW several times until you reach "WEEK In 1", which is for weekly pulse metering of input 1. Accept using PROG, the alarm type is selected automatically. Press the DOWN ARROW 2x to reach "MATCH H". Accept using PROG, hysteresis is selected automatically. If you don't want hysteresis, leave the value on 0 and accept using PROG. Press the DOWN ARROW to go to the 3rd config screen for alarm 1. Press PROG to select the lower limit. If you don't want an alarm for "insufficient" metering, then you can leave this value at 0 and accept using PROG. This automatically selects the upper limit. Press the RIGHT ARROW 5x and the UP ARROW 1x to display Accept using PROG. GB The alarm is now configured. We will assign the output relay to this alarm: Output Src / Type / Delay Logical output setting: source of control, NO/NC type and time Press the LEFT ARROW 2x to display the "OUTPUT" menu. Accept using PROG to select the source. Press the DOWN ARROW 1x to display ALARM 1. The type is selected automatically. Normally Open (NO) operation is correct. Accept using PROG, which selects the time limit automatically. A time limit is not necessary. Leave the value at 0 and accept using PROG. Quit the programming menu by pressing PROG for 3 seconds. - Operation: As soon as weekly metering on input 1 is greater than 100 kwh, a danger pictogram displayed on the screen and the output relay will be closed. will be Ref.: N292554/00 23

24 HANDLING AN ALARM FOR METERING OVERRUN / EXPLAINING DIFFERENT ALARM TYPES Appendix: different types of configurable alarms There are 3 types of configurable alarms: - Analogue alarms: These alarms monitor measured parameters: exceeding a weekly metering value on input 1, etc. The following conditions can activate the alarm: "STATE" alarms / continuous alarms as long as the activation condition is fulfilled. These alarms are only deactivated when the parameter is no longer in alarm conditions. For example, an alarm for exceeding a daily metering value will therefore stop only when the following day begins. It is possible to associate the digital output with these alarms. The various configurations are: * MATCH HIGH: as soon as the parameter is over the threshold. * MATCH LOW: as soon as the parameter is under the threshold. * H and L: as soon as the parameter is over MATCH HIGH or under MATCH LOW. "EDGE" alarms do not continue, but are logged in the product, even if the parameter is still in the alarm condition. * HIGH: as soon as the parameter is over the threshold. * LOW: as soon as the parameter is under the threshold. It is not necessary to associate the digital output with this alarm type because the alarm does not continue. - Combination alarm: These alarms are AND / OR combinations between logical variables: * 7 digital inputs, * 10 alarms. For example, you can do: * Alarm 1 = Input 1 or Input 2, * Alarm 2 = Input 3 or Alarm 1. - Logical alarm: The monitored parameter is a logical parameter: - Input 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. The following conditions can activate the alarm: "STATE" alarms / continuous alarms can activate as long as the activation condition is fulfilled. These alarms are only deactivated when the parameter is no longer in alarm conditions. For example, an alarm for exceeding a daily metering value will therefore stop only when the following day begins. It is possible to associate the digital output with these alarms. The various configurations are: * HIGH: as soon as the input is in the active state (depending on NO/NC configuration => input closed if configured as NO + may take account of a configured time limit). * LOW: as soon as the input is in the active state (depending on NO/NC configuration => input open if configured as NO + may take account of a configured time limit). These functions must be configured and used through the RS485 MODBUS communication interface. Use of a time signal using communication The time signal is used to synchronise integration times for load curves against a clock that may be: - Internal (04687 pulse concentrator internal clock), - External (time signal retrieved on a logical input), - Communication (time signal retrieved using communication). Log of indexes for the 7 logical inputs used for pulse metering The following logs are available: - Daily: last 7 days, - Weekly: last 5 weeks, - Monthly: last 12 months, - Annual: the last year Ref.: N292554/00

27 FUNCTIONS ONLY AVAILABLE USING COMMUNICATION Load curve for logical input Load curves are available for logical inputs. This allows you, for example, to separate a meter total in kwh between different time periods (different pricing periods). They record the number of pulses received per integration time over a period linked to the integration time. Example: - If the integration time is 1 minute, the recording depth is 17 days. - If the integration time is 10 minutes, the recording depth is 170 days. See the retrieval procedure for load curves. (p.14) GB Using 10 different alarms It is possible to configure 5 alarms using the product's buttons and screen, as opposed to 10 alarms using communication (another 5). Configuration takes account of the different alarm activation conditions. When alarm activation conditions are fulfilled, the alarm is automatically registered and timestamped.
