3 TNO Report / 2005-CVB-R0192/ June / 6 1. Introduction By order of, Oud-Beijerland, the Centre for Fire Research TNO has performed an assessment into the possible effects of FirePro Aerosol at computer equipment being in function/operation. The extinguishing capability of the FirePro extinguishing units have been assessed in 2003 and 2004 by the Centre for Fire Research TNO and have been reported in TNO reports 2003-CVB-R0098 and 2004-CVB-R0214. In this additional assessment, a scenario is assumed in which a FirePro unit will be activated unwanted in a FirePro secured room in which computer equipment are in function cq. in operation. It will be examined if the Aerosol which comes free at the unwanted activation does have any effect on the correct functioning of the computer equipment including its components. The assessment was performed on March 4 th 2004 in the ad-hoc test facility at the Centre for Fire Research, Rijswijk, The Netherlands in presence of Mr R.G.C. Reijns, Mr F.M.B. Sturrus and Mr H. Márai, being representatives of CFS Research & Development.
4 TNO Report / 2005-CVB-R0192/ June / 6 2. Test room As indicated, the assessment was performed in the laboratory of the Centre for Fire Research TNO, Rijswijk. In the laboratory a test placing is available being arranged for this aim. For the investigation a test room was made of plywood panels with a thickness of 18 mm upon a wooden crib. The internal measurements of the room are 1.1 x 1.1 x 2.5 m³ (l x w x h). At the front side there is a wooden door measuring 0.93 x 2.02 m². In one of the side walls there is a glass panel to video recording the present computer monitor during the test. Two operating computers were placed on the floor of the test room. The monitor of computer 1 was placed on a table with a height of 0.7 metres. The screen was directed tot the present glass panel. One FirePro unit type FP-100 was mounted to the inner wall of the side wall at a height of 2 metres with their standard brackets according to manufacturer s installation instruction. The unit was connected to an activating unit by a supply wire which was lead through the side wall. The activation unit activated the unit externally (outside the test room). The specification of the FirePro extinguishing unit and the calculation of the capacity of the unit relating to the test room are described in enclosure A. The surrounding temperature during the test was 17ºC and the relative humidity was 32%. 2.1 Computers used The computers used and the additional equipment like mouse, monitor, keyboard has been delivered by and examined by TNO before starting the test. During the test two operational computers were used. One of the computers will be judged on its functions without being cleaned after activation while the other computer will be cleaned after the test by a dry air sprayer without dismantling of the internal parts. After the test both computers were stored in a conditioned room at the laboratory of the Centre for Fire Research TNO to control its functions during one month with intervals of one week. Then, during a period of 15 months having 1 June 2005 as ending date and with intervals of one month, the computers used during the test have been controlled on its function.
5 TNO Report / 2005-CVB-R0192/ June / 6 3. Test The test has been carried out on March 4, After activation of the FP-100 extinguishing unit the room kept closed during 15 minutes. Both computers were operating during this period whereby the monitor of computer #1 was observed through a window in the test room. During the activation and during the 15 minutes period both computers remain functioning undisturbed. After the period of 15 minutes the room was opened and ventilated. Computer #1 was immediately replaced to the conditioned room in which the temperature was 20ºC ± 3ºC and the relative humidity was 50% ± 5%. Here the computer was restarted and functions without interferences. After taking it out of the test room, computer #2 was opened and then cleaned with dry air. During this cleaning action no components except the housing were dismantled. After mounting the housing this computer was also placed in the conditioned room and restarted. This computer also functions without interferences. On 11, 18, 25 March, 1, 8 and 15 April 2004 both computers were restarted again and functioned without interferences. This controlling has been executed monthly until June 1, 2005 whereby both computers still function without interferences during the test period of 15 months. Photo of test setting with computer Photo of FP-100 unit
6 TNO Report / 2005-CVB-R0192/ June / 6 4. Conclusion Summarized it can be concluded that FirePro Aerosol does not have any effect on the function of equipment being present in the room and also being in operation, like computers, monitor and additional equipment (mouse, keyboard). The equipment, both the cleaned as well as the non-cleaned, were functioning properly during the entire test period of 15 months. Signature Ing. P.B. Reijman Signature Ing. R.D. Scheepe
