6 Safety lighting Supply systems for safety services DIN VDE Safety Lighting 3.1 Power supply systems Central power supply systems that are used for systems acc. to DIN VDE (DIN EN 50172) have to correspond to DIN EN Self-contained battery units have to fulfill requirements resulting from DIN VDE and DIN EN For the monitoring respectively for luminiares with automatic control systems DIN EN has to be respected. Please refer to annex A of DIN V VDE V to see which power supply system can be used in which building premises (see table 1) Central power supply system (CPS) Central power supply system which supplies the required emergency power to essential safety equipment without any limitation in power output. design life of battery 10 years at an ambient temperature of 20 C Low Power supply system (LPS) Central power supply system with a limitation of the power output to 500 W for 3 h or 1500 W for 1 h design life of battery 5 years at an ambient temperature of 20 C Self-contained battery unit Self-contained luminaires consist of battery, lamp, control unit as well as control and monitoring unit (if destined) - they can either be in the lamp s housing or they can be near to it (that is within a cable length of 1 m). The batteries normally are maintenancefree NiCd batteries - the complete system has to be designed acc. to EN so that the battery should stay in good order at least 4 years within the usual application environments. design life of battery 4 years at an ambient temperature of 20 C It is allowed to use other batteries if they conform to the corresponding standards concerning safety and servicability as well as requirements of DIN EN The used battery capacities depend on the rated operation duration (1 h, 3 h, 8 h) and on the used lamps. Note: NiCd batteries are excluded from the interdiction of use in emergency light systems by the European Battery Directive. 3.2 Battery Batteries used in safety lighting must comply to requirements acc. to DIN EN Design A battery consists of one or several cells connected to each other. These cells are a group of components consisting of electrode and electrolyte. There are: Closed cells through the top cover gases can escape Sealed cells gas can escape at a predetermined pressure value normally electrolyte can not be refilled Gastight cells do not set gas or liquid free if indicated operating conditions are respected do not need any additional electrolyte all through their life time Typical sorts of battery: NiCd nickel cadmium OPzS stationary closed lead acid battery liner plate low-maintenance OGi stationary closed lead acid battery grid plates low-maintenance OGiV stationary lead acid battery grid plates sealed maintenance-free Battery capacity The needed battery capacity has to be calculated acc. to the connected lamps and their electrical power and the needed rated operation duration (see table 2). The battery manufacturer differ batteries by the rated operation duration, C1, C3, C8 and C10 types. EUROBAT suggests for comparability reasons always the capacity of type C10, plus 25 % reserve in order to allow for aging of battery. 3.3 Charging Battery charger must comply with DIN EN and DIN EN within 12 h loading 80 % batterycapacity IU charging line ambient range 20 C +/-5 C 3.4 Changeover Switching from normal operation to emergency operation shall start automatically if the supply voltage falls below 0,6 rated supply voltage. It shall be restored if the supply voltage is greater than 0,85 rated supply voltage. 3.5 Rated operation duration The time given by the manufacturer during which the dimensioning luminous flux is emitted [DIN EN ]. The rated operation duration is the the nominal operating time acc. to DIN EN Rated luminous flux Luminous flux that is emitted acc. to manufacturer s instructions after 60 s (0.5 s at working places with particular hazard) after a dysfunction of the general electric power supply and from this on till the end of the rated operation duration. [DIN EN ] 3.7 Operating time DIN EN 1838 stipulates an operating time of safety lighting for escape routes of min. 1 h. For high risk task area lighting the rated operating time must be the time during which the potential dangerous situations for people exists (DIN EN 1838). The rated operating time matches the rated operation time acc. DIN V VDE V and DIN EN Response time Response time is the time between the failure of the normal power supply and the auxiliary power supply ernergizing the safety lighting. DIN V VDE V 0108 stipulates different response times for the emergency power supply depending on the use of the building (0,5 s, 1 s and 15 s, see table 1). DIN EN 1838 specifies response times based on lighting applications requirements - The response time according to DIN EN 1838 specifies after which time a certain luminous intensity must be achieved (i.e. after 5 s 50 % and after 60 s 100 % of the required luminous intensity). 3.9 Circuits central power systems for safety lighting Basically, independent cables leading from the central power system to the respective fire area ensure the functional integrity of safety lighting in case of fire. The functional integrity of the supply lines is required between the central power system and the first luminaire or distribution in the respective fire area. Each line has 6 Ruhstrat GmbH Heinestraße Bovenden phone: +49 (0) fax: +49 (0) info@ruhstrat.com web:

7 Table 2: Example of calculation of the required battery capacity 1) In this example a system is chosen with separate maintained (DS) and non-maintained (BS) final circuits, that is min. 4 final circuits per fire area 2) Depending on the battery manufacturer, the appropriate type of battery C10 must be selected 3) This reserve is calculated as an option in order to connect some additional lamps later on 4) This reserve has to be calculated in order to meet concerns about battery aging to be electrically protected by a separate fuse. By this concept of wiring one can assume, that the fire will firstly affect a limited part of the building only and the complete safety lighting in the rest of the building remains still ready for operation. The complete breakdown of safety lighting in the part of the building affected by the fire is continued to be delayed by the following redundance. If there are more than two emergency luminaires in one room or at one escape route VDE requires that they have to be independently fused in an alternating way. In the classical sense this redundancy requires at least 4 lines with functional integrity leading from the battery system to each fire area as every second emergency sign luminaire (in maintained mode DS) and every second security luminaire (in non-maintained mode BS) are connected to differentcircuits (see figure 1 on page 8). It is possible to achieve the same level of safety by the so called mixed mode operation (see figure 2). Here, every second luminaire in maintained mode and in nonmaintained mode can be connected to the same final circuit so the required minimum number of circuits for one fire area is two. If one final circuit breaks down every second safety and every second escape sign luminaire stays active Cable concepts centrally feeded safety lighting Basically, independent cables leading from the central battery to the respective fire compartment ensure the functional reliability of an safety lighting in case of fire. These supply lines have to maintain their performance up to the first lamp or the first distributor in the fire compartment and have to be electrically protected. By this way of wiring one can assume, in case of fire in the building, that the fire will firstly affect a limited part of the building and the safety lighting in the rest of the building remains still ready for operation. The complete drop-out of safety lighting in the part of the building affected by the fire is continued to be delayed by the following redundance. If there are more than two emergency lamps in one room or at one escape route E VDE says that they have to be connected to two independent protection devices in an DIN VDE Safety Lighting DS BS Lamps 10-storey office building final circuits DS + BS 1) Corridors 1 corridor per floor which is identified as escape route 10 4 = à 6 W 10 6 à 58 W Stairwells 2 necessary stairwells 2 4 = à 6 W 2 22 à 58 W Basement 1 corridor identified as escape route 1 4 = à 6 W 1 5 à 8 W Equipment room Main distribution, equipment room 1 3 = à 6 W 1 2 à 8 W W 6088 W ~7150 W Capacity evalutation Battery capacity 402 W W = 6490 W + 10 % reserve (3 Battery discharge current 7150 W / 216 V ~ 33,1 A 3 h rated operation duration ~ 99,3 Ah + 25 % reserve 4 99,3 Ah 1,25 124,13 Ah 2 alternating way. In the classical sense this redundancy requires at least 4 lines with functional integrity leading from the battery system to each fire compartment as the emergency sign lamps (in continuous circuit CC) and the emergency lamps (in stand-by switch SS) are in separated current circuits (see figure 1) and each second lamp of each type is to be connected to an output current circuit in an alternating way. It is possible to achieve the same emergency through the so called undulating current electrical circuit (see figure 2). Here, the lamps in continuous circuit and in stand-by switch are on one final circuit. Furthermore the lamps must be switched on in an alternating way. If one output current circuit drops out every second emergency and every second emergency sign luminaire stays active. The dislocation of the circuit modules to switch-over from mains operation to emergency power (battery) into the respective fire compartments makes it possible to reduce once again the lines with functional integrity (see figure 3). 9 be supplied by one E30 line. A mixture of dislocated and not dislocated final circuit modules is not possible. An advantage of the dislocated final circuits is the small number of lines and cable trays with functional integrity Final circuits number of luminaires Max. 20 luminaires can be connected per final circuit. Another limitation of the number of luminaires per final circuit is the dimensioning of the overcurrent protection device that protects the final circuit. A final circuit may only be loaded to 60% of the rated current of the protection device (DIN V VDE V ). The previous limitation of the rated current of the protection device of the final circuit to 10 A does not exist any more Installation of system and battery For emergency lighting systems and batteries EltBauVo stipulates that there have to be suitable electrical service rooms and corresponding battery rooms. This means that provisions have to be taken concerning fire protection and further constructional conditions examples see figure 4. Depending on the capacity and the type of battery the battery rooms should be ventilated sufficiently. Dimensioning acc. to DIN EN Prefer natural ventilation to mechanical. Depending on the location of the electrical service room of the system and of the location of the sub-distributions of the safety lighting in the fire areas, functional integrity of E30 is required for the housing of the distributions and the corresponding supply lines. Functional integrity of the distribution and the circuit system is not needed if the emergency lighting system resp. a distribution of the emergency lighting system serves only to supply one fire area and if the system resp. the distribution is in this fire area. If fire areas are bigger than 1600 m² MLAR allows to split them into virtual fire areas Control and bus systems Control and bus systems for safety lighting shall be independent of the control and bus systems for the general lighting. Coupling of both systems is permitted only with interfaces that ensure a decoupling/isolation of both busses from each other. A failure in the control and bus system of the general lighting leads to a breakdown of the general lighting on a room or an escape route, this control must be monitored. In case of a fault the security lighting in the operation mode stand-by mode must be switched on [E DIN VDE ]. 10 Ruhstrat GmbH Heinestraße Bovenden phone: +49 (0) fax: +49 (0) info@ruhstrat.com web:

11 3.15 Inspection Inspection system Luminaires of safety lighting according to DIN EN shall be monitored and tested manually or automatically. Automatic test systems (ATS) must comply to DIN EN Depending on system type, single battery lamps or centrally supplied lamps, different tests in different intervals must be done. These checks, depending on type of plant layout, can be made and recorded automatically by the test system (acc. to DIN EN 62034) or manually. DIN EN separates these test systems into four groups: Type S: Automatic test system in the lamp with display at the lamp - local inspection of lamp for manual recording of test results necessary. Type P: Supervision and display of test results of several lamps at central test system manual recording of test results necessary. Type ER: As type P and additonal automatic recording of test results of connected lamps. Type PRN: As type P or ER but with collective fault display that gives automatically a remote display with information about the failure of one of the checked lamps Log book Tests and maintenance are to be noted in a log book or with a print out of the automatic test system. DIN V VDE V stipulates that the log book must be kept by a designated responsible person. At least the following must be noted: a. date of commissioning including documentation of subsequent changes b. date of regular tests c. d ate and short description resp. notes of the maintenance and tests done d. date and short description of each fault and every maintenance e. date short description of each change within the emergency lighting system f. if an automatic test system is used documentation of functions and process Inspection procedure deadlines The tests described here have been taken from E DIN VDE Possible guidelines of national authorities must be respected in parallel. If tests are made that reduce the battery capacity, e.g. the rated operation duration test, one has to make sure that these tests are only done in time of low risk. If this is not possible appropriate measure for this period must be taken until the batteries are recharged Initial inspection The initial inspection comprises the lighting verification of given values of safety lighting. The measurements shall be done as described in DIN Periodic inspections Daily: Check display for correct functioning. Visual inspection if system ready-to-operate no functional test Weekly: Function of safety lighting: at least once per week. Connection of the power source for safety purposes is needed if it is a battery-buffered system. Thereby the function of the luminaires for the safety lighting including those for escape sign luminaires must be checked. Monthly: Functional test without rated operation duration, that is Switching of each luminaire to emergency operation through simulation of a breakdown of the general supply for a duration that is sufficiently long to ensure that every lamp is on the switching back to the general power supply of all luminaires must be checked. Yearly: Functional test combined with rated operation duration test, that is switching of each luminaire to emergency operation through simulation of a breakdown of the general power supply for the full operation duration given by manufacturer. Attention: release this test manually it must not be released automatically. It has to be respected that this test of the rated operation duration test is done during periods of low risk. If this is not possible appropriate measure must be taken for this period until the batteries are recharged. DIN VDE Safety Lighting The switching back to the general power supply of all luminaires must be checked. Check function of charging device. Also check if all lamps are clean. 12 Safety lighting Supply systems for safety services RUSIC central emergency lighting system Technical information RUSIC central emergency lighting systems are built to the relevant standards and guidelines. They are a response to the increased public safety consciousness. RUSIC Systems offer variable central power supply solutions in correspondance to the current national building regulations, the Directive for Line Systems (MLAR) and EN (Central power supply systems), DIN EN ( Emergency Escape lighting systems - DIN VDE ). RUSIC emergency lighting systems allow to realize solutions that are tailored especially to the respective building applications. These solutions ensure a simple installation, a safe operation and a reduction of the fire load as a first priority. RUSIC central emergency lighting systems provide with the mixed mode operation of final circuits technology and with the internal and external devices solutions that fulfil exactly these requirements and expectations. RUSIC central emergency lighting systems are acc. to DIN EN and DIN V VDE V for all building applications. Battery and charging technology, processing unit and monitoring modules are the basis of RUSIC emergency lighting system. Independent satellite stations can be flexibly installed as needed. These stations with external circuits modules react individually to mains power failure without influencing others. In order to meet the technical requirements, the satellite stations are individually electrically protected and are available if required with E30 functional integrity. This saves costs and increases safety. 4.1 Benefits of the RUSIC central emergency lighting system Depending on priority of the specific planning parameters of emergency lighting system RUSIC can manage to realize project-specific planned safety lighting (see table 4). From the simple system RUSIC Base without monitoring for replacing old existing systems there are a lot of other solutions. Systems with special voltage (RUSIC Base xv) for example or with electrical circuit monitoring (RUSIC Control), upto all-integrating system RUSIC Universe with mixed mode operation technology, internal and external circuits and individual lamp monitoring. n RUSIC Universe Mixed mode operation technology with individual lamp monitoring with directly outgoing and external circuits for reduction of E30 lines n RUSIC Base EL DS and BS* separated with directly outgoing and external circuits and with individual lamp monitoring n RUSIC Control DS and BS separated with directly outgoing and external circuits and with electrical circuit monitoring n RUSIC Base DS and BS separated without monitoring n RUSIC Base xv DS and BS separated, without monitoring with special voltage (24 V, 48 V, 60 V, 110 V) All solutions with monitoring function electrical circuit or individual lamp monitoring can be established with circuits coming directly from the central station (with internally mounted electrical circuit cards RESK) or with external circuits (with electrical circuits RSKM modules externally grouped in sub-distributions). This means: n Easy configuration of the equipment concept and the line concept for supply of the fire area n Combination of internal and external final circuits with separate circuit modules and/or power circuit distributions n Mixed mode technology: escape sign luminaires in maintained and emergency lighting luminaires in non-maintained mode in one final circuit mode (maintained/nonmaintained mode can be assigned centrally at the system n The connection of the final circuits directly in the system s cabinet can be easily and comfortably done as the Ruhstrat cabinet size is designed generously n Display and evaluation of all messages at a central point directly shown on LCD display or via R-Port and own IP address connection to every network (LAN) n CPU with backlit four line text display for good readability combined with a clearly arranged control panel n 19 rack system for easy assembly and disassembly of system slots n Compact type of construction of equipment n Monitoring and control systems independent from each other and coordinated by stable RS485 bus n Availability of components and electronic ballasts with energy saving power reduction during battery operation and implemented address decoder n Sub-stations completely available in F30 n Simple to install and easy to maintain * DS: Maintained mode BS: non-maintained mode 12 Ruhstrat GmbH Heinestraße Bovenden phone: +49 (0) fax: +49 (0) info@ruhstrat.com web:

13 4.2 Monitoring Acc. to DIN VDE the operator of emergency lighting systems is obliged to check the functions of a central battery system as well as the connected luminaires perodically as stipulated and to make corresponding reports in the so-called log book. Automatic test equipment helps to reduce these staff costs and this expenditure of time. RU- SIC central emergency lighting systems permit an enormous reduction of these efforts and costs through an automatic system, line, battery and lamp monitoring. System bound EVGs with corresponding monitoring and address devices or separate monitoring components in the luminaires are used for the individual luminaire monitoring. Up to 128 electrical circuits with up to 2560 luminaires can be steadily monitored and administrated by one system. For these monitoring functions no additonal data lines to the lamps are necessary. The complete monitoring is done via the existing supply lines to the fire areas and luminaires if external circuit modules RSKM and digital inputs RDN-EA in the fire areas are used, they are connected via RS485 bus to the RUSIC central emergency lighting system length of BUS up to 1000 m, type of line LIYCY min ,5, CAT 5 recommended components in sequence with RUE as 1st component. Status information of the RUSIC emergency lighting system are saved automatically and recorded for the inspection log book (up to 65,000 entries). They are immediately available for the user over years. method the detection of faulty LED, which are still consuming current but are not shining anymore, is safe. 4.3 System Configuration RUSIC emergency lighting systems meet all requirements of VDE 0108, EN and EN as well as ÖVE/ Önorm E8002. 22 Safety lighting Supply systems for safety services Combi cabinet KG 1800 KG 18 / 6-45 Batteries 600 Case depth 465 Basically, two types of batteries are used: n gastight nickel cadmium batteries with sintered design and preferably cylindrical design in lamps n sealed lead acid batteries preferably with prismatic design with the specified electrolyte in central systems NiCd batteries for central systems do in fact have longer service lifes but are also significantly more expensive to purchase and for the later disposal. For this reason, Ruhstrat recommends sealed lead acid batteries. The specified expected service life of ten years is optimised using temperature compensated charging adjustment. Temperature fluctuations at the battery location are compensated. The sealed battery systems also show the benefit of less complex ventilation. Rated voltage per cell 2,0 V. According to VDE 0108 for emergency lighting systems with central batteries as lead acid batteries, those with positive large area plates and positive armour plates or grid plates must be used. Vehicle starter batteries are not permitted. Exceptions are only allowed in special cases according to VDE NiCd batteries for emergency lighting systems with central battery. Rated voltage per cell 1,2 V. According to DIN EN there are no limiting regulations with respect to design and electrode design. Closed batteries (OPZS /OGI) for emergency lighting systems. These batteries must be maintained regularly; among other things this means checking the electrolyte level and refilling with distilled water as needed. As gassing occurs during the charging of these batteries, the batteries must be installed with ventilation of the installation area taking into account of EN Sealed batteries (OGIV) according to VDE 0108, these batteries must be designed so that refilling with liquids is ruled out, they are suitable for trickle charging and that no electrolyte escapes in the case of proper operation irrespective of the usage position. These battery systems are designated as maintenance-free by the manufacturer. Note: The temperature at the installation locations must be taken into account. If batteries are used which can produce gas during proper operation, a safe gas outlet must be provided. 22 Ruhstrat GmbH Heinestraße Bovenden phone: +49 (0) fax: +49 (0) info@ruhstrat.com web:
