1 Power Power Comm Comm Run Run Temp Degas Power Comm Run Temp Xenon Lamp Replacement Guide This guide describes how to replace the xenon lamp light source of the Surveyor FL Plus Detector. As the lamp reaches the end of its lifespan, the light output decreases, resulting in decreased sensitivity. You can track the sensitivity of the detector with the Maintenance for FL Plus application program. Replace the lamp when it reaches the end of its lifespan, approximately 500 hours of use. Before you install or replace the xenon lamp, view the training video provided with the fluorescence detector. CAUTION Because the xenon gas inside the glass bulb is under extremely high pressure, the xenon lamp can explode. Because the xenon lamp has the potential to explode, wear a face shield and gloves, in addition to your standard safety glasses and laboratory coat, when you replace the xenon lamp. The face shield must meet ANSI Z87.1, CSA Z93.3, or the equivalent. Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends N-DEX PLUS 8005 gloves, manufactured by Best Manufacturing Company. To order these gloves from Thermo Fisher Scientific, use the following part numbers: P/N (size small) P/N (size large) Store this additional personal protective equipment near the FL detector (see Figure 1). 2 2 Removing the Xenon Lamp Housing from the Detector CAUTION For safety reasons, disconnect the power cord before removing the stainless steel plate from the front panel of the FL detector. CAUTION The xenon lamp generates enough heat to raise the temperature of the surrounding metal surfaces to a dangerous level. Before you remove the xenon lamp housing from the detector, allow the xenon lamp to cool for at least two hours. To remove the xenon lamp housing from the detector housing 1. Turn off the power, and unplug the detector from line power. 2. Allow the lamp to cool for a minimum of two hours. 3. Loosen the retaining screw that secures the flow cell unit to the detector, and then pull the flow cell unit forward to remove it from the detector. Place the flow cell unit on a lint-free cloth. 4. Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the five screws that secure the stainless steel plate to the detector chassis (see Figure 2). 3 5. Pull the plug of the xenon lamp housing out of the receptacle in the detector, and remove the thumbscrew from the grip of the xenon lamp housing (see Figure 3). Receptacle Plug Thumbscrew Figure 3. Connections between the xenon lamp housing and the detector chassis Grip 3

4 6. Lift the xenon lamp housing by its grip, and then using two hands, carefully pull the xenon lamp housing out of the detector chassis (see Figure 4). 5 Removing the Xenon Lamp from the Xenon Lamp Housing To remove the xenon lamp from the xenon lamp housing 1. Place the xenon lamp housing on its side. IMPORTANT Do not touch the mirror inside the xenon lamp housing. If you accidentally touch the mirror, clean it with a lint-free cloth soaked in high-grade isopropyl alcohol. 2. Holding the metal fixture at the top of the xenon lamp, unscrew the anode nut, and then slide the anode terminal of the lamp backward out of the ceramic plate (see Figure 5). Figure 5. 6 3. Holding the metal fixture at the bottom of the xenon lamp, unscrew the cathode nut, and then pull the cathode terminal out of the cathode lead plate (see Figure 6). Figure 6. Unscrewing the cathode nut from the cathode terminal Installing the Xenon Lamp To connect the xenon lamp to the xenon lamp housing 1. Place the xenon lamp housing on its side. 2. Remove the xenon lamp from its packaging. IMPORTANT Dust and fingerprints on the glass bulb reduce the light output of the xenon lamp. If necessary, clean the glass bulb with a lint-free cloth soaked in high-grade isopropyl alcohol. 3. Remove the nuts from the ends of the lamp. 4. Secure the xenon lamp to the xenon lamp housing as follows (see Figure 7): a. Holding the metal fixture at the bottom of the lamp, insert the cathode terminal into the hole in the cathode lead plate, and then screw one of the nuts onto the cathode terminal. b. Holding the metal fixture at the top of the lamp, insert the anode terminal into the hole in the ceramic plate, and then screw the other nut onto the anode terminal. 6

Ensure that the protrusion on the light bulb faces towards the front of the xenon lamp housing and that the metal wire is next to the protrusion (see Figure 7). CAUTION Take care to install the xenon lamp in the correct orientation. If you reverse the polarity of the terminals, turning on the power to the detector does not trigger the lamp and can damage the lamp cathode. Reinstalling the Xenon Lamp Housing and the Flow Cell Unit To reinstall the xenon lamp housing and the flow cell unit 1. Slide the xenon lamp housing into the chassis (see Figure 3). 2. Insert the xenon lamp housing plug into the receptacle in the detector chassis. 3. Insert the thumbscrew through the hole in the grip of the xenon lamp housing, and then hand tighten the thumbscrew to secure the lamp housing to the chassis. 4. Using the five screws you removed in step 4 on page 2, secure the stainless steel plate to the front panel of the detector. 5. Reinstall the flow cell unit and tighten its retaining screw. After you connect the FL detector to line power, refer to the Surveyor FL Plus Detector Hardware Manual for instructions on aligning the xenon lamp. 7

8 + Disposing of the Xenon Lamp To dispose of the used xenon lamp 1. Wearing a face shield and gloves, completely wrap the xenon lamp in a heavy duty towel, such that no portion of the lamp is exposed (see Figure 8). 2. To burst its glass bulb, hit the wrapped xenon lamp with a hammer or an equivalent heavy object. 3. Dispose of the broken glass in an appropriate waste container. 1.
